Art History in No Particular Order ~ (1/∞)
Portrait of Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier and His Wife
Jacques-Louis David, 1788, Oil on Canvas
Neoclassicism
Painted during the height of the neoclassical era, this painting depicts Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, a French chemist, and his wife, Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze. It was commissioned by Marie-Anne, who had studied drawing from David. Originally, it was to be displayed in the 1789 Salon, but was removed because of a scandal that Lavoisier was involved in.
The painting is very typical of the Neoclassical era in both content and style. Lavoisier himself was a chemist, known for studying gunpowder, oxygen, and water’s chemical composition. He is shown writing at a table, and various scientific tools are beside him. His wife is leaning towards him, and her study of drawing is alluded to with the case on the left side of the canvas. The style is very realistic, but also shows the perfection of man in his ability to use reason and study the sciences.
The artist’s signature can be found on the bottom left, which reads L DAVID, PARISIIS ANNO, 1788.
