Colin Bridgerton, At Your Service
By: GleefullyPolin
Chapter 6 Update:
Colin and Penelope take their relationship to the next step on their getaway but a simple phrase sends everything crashing to the ground. Colin and Penelope find comfort and advice from two different Bridgerton Siblings.
Summary:
After a string of bad dates and a distrust in love, Penelope Featherington believes that the words of Lady Whistledown are true! There are no viable men left in the city to date and some people are simply incapable of being loved.
Her best friend Colin Bridgerton disagrees, he believes that love is the most important thing that can happen to you. He happens to know that there is a special person out there for everyone, even if he's never had the courage to tell them.
Now, Colin has 2 weeks to convince Penelope that Lady Whistledown is wrong, in a bet that just might be the most desperate thing he's ever done to try and win her heart. But is Penelope playing a fair game or will a secret come out that destroys everything they've ever known about each other.

While we're on the topic of good acting in Bridgerton, I want to make a shout out to both Luke and Nicola for one of my favourite scenes:
The dream sequence is so well done! Not just the acting, but set design and directing.
But let's focus on the acting. Because this is a very different scene for Luke and Nicola; they are not playing Colin and Penelope here. They are playing a fictionalised version of those characters (fictionalised within the narrative) that Colin has dreamed up. In his dream, he is the dashing hero of a romance novel and Pen is his beautiful heroine. And considering that the whole show is taken from a romance novel like the one Colin is dreaming of, it just goes to show how good Luke and Nicola's acting is that we can tell the difference.
The dialogue is a lot more formal, their voices and accents a bit posher. It isn't until Penelope is whispering Colin's name that she sounds like herself. These characters both are and aren't Colin and Penelope, and it takes some great acting chops to show that.
And when you compare it to the carriage scene, you can see the difference. The carriage scene is a lot more awkward and far less dashing. But it's real.
Colin starts off unsure, but from the moment he kneels down on the floor, he knows what he wants to say - he's replayed this speech in his dreams a dozen times - but now he's got to figure out how to say it. There are moments of doubt and moments where he gets into his stride, and it's just a brilliant mix of different and similar to the dream scene.
And Pen, of course, is very different. In Colin's dream, she instantly admits she feels the same, but in the carriage, she is much more human. She's confused and surprised and needs a minute, so she starts by pointing out that they are friends.
You can see the heartbroken acceptance in Colin's eyes as he backs down. This is not how his dreams ended, and now he's back to reality. But then Pen catches up, and admits the truth of her feelings, and suddenly the dream is back on.
Okay, so this post ended up being about two of my favourite scenes, but the comparison between them is just amazing.

Luke Newton is responsable for one of the most beloved moments of season 3, when Colin fix Pen's dress in the carriage while avoiding a few fingers. It was Luke's idea and it was intentional.
It was also his doing the chin touch at the end of Polin's wedding dance. In fact, that whole sequence of they dancing alone in the room wasn't planed but end up being in the show - I believe I have heard it was a sort of rehearsal that end up being filmed after director Tom Verica notice it's beauty. Nic said on her instagram it was filmed in one take.
This whole dance is so beautful, so simbolic and so important for the history that it pisses me of that no one in the production tough about including it before Luke and Nic performed the dance and their roles in a magical way. It also debunks the theory some people had that they were dancing with their children and no one else as it was a last minute decision and not actually planed as a way to tell the story.
Both the dress fixing and the ching touch are amazingly done acting choices as being a touchy person is a trait of book Colin's personality and fits his persona very well...
Is also known that in the scene Colin watches Pen dance with Debbling the other dancers where removed from the scene so we can see Luke as Colin's full emotion. And we do get to see it. Also, Polin's fallout/argument after their wedding breakfeast was also reportely done down in anger as it was supposed to be harsh by the director's vision.
I hope this post helps you to understand how much Luke Newton - and Nicola Coughlan - brough to Bridgerton's season 3. And how much of our favorite scenes are sorounded by his (and Nicola's) acting choices.
How Nic alleged asked for Luke to not see her in Penelope's wedding dress before filming. Or the rumour that in the epilogue Colin was supposed to kiss the baby's head but he choses to kiss Pen/Nicola.

Every rewatch of the scene when Colin discovers Pen is Whistledown makes me even more awed of Luke’s acting.
And that moment when his voice breaks as he says “I knew something was wrong…”… 🫡🫡

I just love when they dance. The smiles, the coordination. A perfect pairing. Colin and Penelope are THAT couple. Kudos to Luke & Nicola really giving it their all to make Polin season the BEST. I can't wait to see what the new season brings for them. I do hope, at least for more dancing for them. 🥰🥹
