Ovulation Induction (OI) and Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
For some women, just by increasing the chances of ovulation by using ovulation induction medicines may increase the probability of conception. This can be coupled with timed intercourse (TI) which means your fertile window is utilised thereby improving the chances of success. We can also combine this with IUI whereby sperms and eggs are brought closer at the right time.
Ovulation induction (OI)
It can be done either with oral drugs or injections. These medications help in the development and growth of dominant follicle. Serial ultrasounds are done during the cycle to track the size of follicle. Ovulation is triggered with the help of injection when the follicle reaches a size capable of releasing a mature egg. This is coupled with IUI so as to increase the density of sperms at the right time.
Who are eligible candidates for OI?
Ovulation induction is effective in women with ovulation disorder. It can be combined with IUI in cases of unexplained infertility. For couples where sperm quality in terms of count and motility is a concern, IUI can be combined with ovulation induction.
Any risk of OI ?
In the natural cycle, women usually produce a single mature egg but when fertility medicines are used to induce ovulation, sometimes more than one follicle develops which increases the risk of multiple gestation. In PCOS women, use of gonadotropin injections should be done under supervision of your fertility expert as this requires extensive monitoring during the cycle to avoid any complications.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
It's the first line treatment option if you have unexplained or male factor infertility. The rationale is to increase the gamete density at the site of fertilisation. It is a safe and simple procedure performed on an outpatient basis. You may need to have atleast one patent healthy tube and normal ovarian reserve. The semen sample is processed in the laboratory at a defined time and the highly motile sperms are then placed in the uterus to increase the chances of fertilisation. We may recommend at least three consecutive cycles of IUI combined with ovarian stimulation. You may consult with us about the complete procedure in detail.
Who are eligible candidates for IUI?
IUI is suitable in a number of fertility related issues -
Unexplained infertility Low sperm counts or decreased motility Ejaculatory dysfunction Use of donor sperms for IUI Use of frozen sperms
Success rate of IUI
IUI is a cost effective procedure as compared to IVF but the success rates are less than IVF. The success depends on various factors like age, factor of infertility, ovarian reserve, etc
