something i really like about rika furude is that ryukishi07 doesn’t play the “really 700 years old” trope with her straight. like, she’s lived a very long time, but she’s been having different variations on the same childhood experience every time for hundreds of years. she hasn’t gone through puberty yet so her brain literally cannot develop into an adult woman’s, and she’s very aware of it. she’s not growing, she’s not maturing, and she certainly isn’t “practically an adult”. she’s more of a deeply troubled, traumatized kid stuck in time loop limbo, which is infinitely more interesting than the tired old “adult in a kid’s body”

Lottie and Laura Lee… the prophet and the saint, the pagan priestess and the Christian martyr. You have a vision of your friend surrounded by flames, and she tells you the fire must’ve meant the presence of god, but then it turns out it had only meant her death. The woods want to have you all for themselves, so she has to die. And it sounds like some pseudohistorical early Middle Ages thing but you’re both teenage girls in the 90s

To me, being aromantic isn't just an absence of romantic attraction - it's a way of viewing the world, of seeing relationships as things to be fully decided upon by the individuals within them rather than by societal norms and expectations, of prioritizing what I want out of life rather than what society expects, of being free. Even if I did experience romantic attraction, I would still identify as aromantic because of all that being in the aro community has taught me.

things higurashi has taught me so far: 1. friends can be your family too 2. cops don't care about your wellbeing 3. murder is ok (ideal, even) 4. bury the body deeper than you'd think 5. people can change for the better and their past should not define them

So far, into Higurashi When They Cry Hou - Ch.5 Meakashi, I found Rena to be such an underrated character with her role in it. The way she pulls information from others really goes to show how keenly observant and analytical she is, despite her cutesy exterior. She is not naïve, and she is most certainly among the most intelligent characters in the series.
Irregardless of what she suffers internally, she sets that aside to help her friends in the most desperate of scenarios (and by this time, their strong linked friendship may not have been fully set in stone). One prime example is how she diffuses the physical and emotional struggle between Shion, Satoko, and Satoshi at school. Taking the role of a mediator, she doesn’t appear to “take a side”, despite Shion being the one clearly in the wrong. She simply supports all sides and extinguishes the tension by getting everyone to apologize, and stop to realize what they were doing. Isn’t that so cool? How she can easily read people and know how to handle emotional situations that well? The highest emotional intelligence for sure. She strives towards the best interests of everyone.
She would be the best friend anyone could ask for. Any “creepiness” that she portrays is simply her mental suffering, and even still, as shown in both Onikakushi and Meakashi, her intimidation is only displayed when she seeks the truth. So, all you need to do is be honest with her, and she’ll protect you and work with you through it all. That’s why I don’t feel afraid of her whatsoever, I relate to her struggle. I wish she had more support from her friends when she’s sharing her mental demons… but instead they are clearly wary or afraid so far. She’s strong in that regard, being able to endure everything herself the way she does. Her hoarding may be a direct venting mechanism, or as an escape for relief.
Definitely my favorite character in the entire series. Hau~
