Accutane (isotretinoin) is a medicine for severe acne. From time to time you see someone mention it, and it’s always in the context of its legendarily bad side effects:
An Everything2 user summed up their experience as “you get to pay $3500 over the course of the worst year of your fucking life”.
I was wondering why it’s so rough, but reading the Wikipedia article it kindof makes sense:
Mechanism of action
Isotretinoin’s exact mechanism of action is unknown, but several studies have shown that isotretinoin induces apoptosis (programmatic cell death) in various cells in the body. Cell death may be instigated in the meibomian glands,[30][57]hypothalamic cells,[58]hippocampus cells[59][60] and—important for treatment of acne—in sebaceous gland cells.[61][62]
We found this molecule that kills cells all over the body. And it’s great, because it kills the acne too! Taking a very big hammer to the problem.

earlier this week my roommate and i watched the anime movie summer wars together, which is set in a world where basically all of the infrastructure is connected to this massive virtual reality which gets hacked by a malevolent AI, causing worldwide chaos. while watching, my roommate was poking fun at the story's premise, because of how ridiculous and unsafe it is to just have so much important infrastructure tied to one program, which is demonstrated in the film — traffic grinds to a halt and people literally die as a result of medical technology getting bricked. and also there's nearly a nuclear apocalypse. there's a reason why it doesn't work that way in real life, my roommate said.
and then today i wake up and find out about the crowdstrike fiasco,

FDA warning letters are awesome. you can tell how pissed off some of the people writing them are. a few highlights of the dozen or two letters I read today:
when one company found out an inspection was happening, they deleted a ton of files related to manufacturing. when asked why they deleted those files, they said they simply did not want to talk about their contents with the inspector
a company had dripping pipes on manufacturing equipment that said it was clean and ready to use. they said it was fine because that manufacturing equipment was not being used. the inspector watched it get used
a website selling oxy without a prescription
if you put on full sterile garb with your bare hands and before putting on gloves it is not fucking sterile
STOP CRAWLING ON THE FLOOR. AND IF YOU CRAWL ON THE FLOOR, CHANGE YOUR FUCKING GEAR
one company saying they test their water for contaminants to make sure their water is being filtered correctly. the FDA inspector then pointed out their water tested positive for contaminants dozens of times and still used it in manufacturing
if you sell drugs in the united states you have to follow united states drug laws. yes even if what you did is fine back in your country
inspectors being pissed about unsafe and badly tested products being sold to children
your so called sterility sucked x 10000
STOP FUCKING SELLING UMBILICAL CORDS‼️‼️
