Your take is valid, but consider: Sonic is from an era where calling people gay could be considered in some circles as friendly bullying, poking someone to let them know you love them, and would mirror those around him. After being informed as to it’s actual meaning, he would greatly apologize to those he said it to and make it clear that he doesn’t really care what orientation they are so long as they accept themselves.  And Shadow is an edgy ball of spite and hubris. He would not care. 

Headcanon: Sonic would call someone gay as a joke but stop once he realizes how offensive it is. Shadow would do it to piss homophobic people off without hesitation.

I have to disagree, king. I feel like Sonic wouldn't use it as a joke in the first place cuz he's literally the most accepting character on the planet. Shadow calling homophobic ppl gay is just antagonistic and no progress would be made and actually makes it harder for homophobic ppl to change their views if a tiny ass black hedgehog is calling them gay.
