Hey there, lovelies! So, I suppose it’s around time I should officially announce that this blog will be going on a semi-hiatus. I definitely don’t want to leave Alphonse for good, but I’ll soon be starting a full time summer job and I’ve also signed up for a Big Bang event where I figure my fic will be over 25k, so that’s where my writing focus will be over the next couple months. At this point I know that the FMA Live Action movie has been out for over a month and talked about a lot, but I was always planning on posting something about it so I’m going to do that here! Just note if anyone ever wants to talk to me about it just message away! I have lots of opinions, good and bad!

Here though I wanted to point out a couple things that really bugged me about the movie....

The first one is the big one which is: holy fuck did they not do Alphonse justice at all. He felt like a background prop. Ed and Al have near equal importance in the anime/manga but in this movie Al was pushed so much to the sidelines. This was immediately obviously from the first battle when Al came in to save Ed. He didn’t say anything. Didn’t speak until minutes later! I was so surprised by how quiet he was during that whole part, not making any noise at all! And overall he served almost no purpose in the movie? I love Al with all my heart so whenever I saw him on screen I was happy but oh boy, the movie did not give him the spotlight he deserved.

The second thing is more a personal pet peeve, I guess, but it drives me nuts: the GATE SCENE. Fun fact: potentially my favourite scene in FMAB is when Ed sees Al’s body at the gate. There was so much great buildup to that moment, and the shock and desperation in Ed when he saw Al and was SO desperate to get to him played out so brilliantly. But in the movie... oh lord. Ed had so little reaction to seeing Al. He was basically just like “oh hey Al” like it was no big deal he was seeing his brother’s body for the first time in years. Then there was that nonsense with him and the Truth, which... eh. And the only time Ed shows much emotion towards Al is when he yells at him in the very end, which felt... out of place for me almost? The whole scene was weird, and a huge disappointment for me, considering how much I adore the anime scene.

Unpopular Opinion: FMA Live Action Was Not Good

Now wait a minute! I know you’re upset. It seems that most people on this site + in this fandom rather liked it. And that’s great! I do want people to enjoy it.

But let me tell you why I didn’t. Spoilers ahead.

     “Al if Den is making your feet fall asleep just get her to move, she’ll fall asleep somewhere else…”  Winry had just put the dogs’ food down, but had found her sleeping soundly on Al’s feet… Apparently, she’d been there for hours. Den had that sort of quirk about her. Adorable but impractical for someone who’d just had his body again for a few months. “ I can do it if you want?”

Al laughed and gave a light shake of his head. “It’s okay, Winry! She can stay here for a bit longer if she wants, I don’t mind.”

His feet being asleep and trapped under the dog was a bit uncomfortable -- especially with his body still adjusting to these sort of sensations -- but it was nothing he couldn’t handle. Al was quite content to sit there, petting Den’s fur and feeling the warmth of it underneath his fingers. She was good company, always had been, and he couldn’t disappoint her by making her leave now. 

“I've missed stuff like this.” He admitted.
