rhcttmcdaniel:
sabrina knows. the words echoed in his brain over and over again. there was no getting out of this now, no more lying or hiding things. rhett and arielle had to come clean about whatever this was but more importantly, they had to figure out what this was before talking to hadley anyways. it was a conversation he was afraid to have with arielle, mostly because he was afraid of rejection. he’d understand if she’d want someone more her age or someone who wasn’t her best friend’ older brother but he really hoped that she was feeling the same things that he was feeling when the two of them were together. everytime they touched, he always felt like his heart was going to beat out of his chest and it’d been a little bit since a woman had made him feel that way. he pushed his fingers through his blonde hair and inahled a deep breathed. he was seated on the edge of his bed with her and the room was mostly quiet. they were both trying to figure out what to say, or at least that’s what he assumed was happening. “arielle,” he breathed out, “before we tell hadley about what we’ve been doing, i think we should discuss what this is.” he wasn’t one to be so up front, especially about his feelings but he figured there was really no way to avoid it. “i mean, it’s okay if you want to stop things now. i’ll understand but i want you to know how i feel,” his heart rate picked up and his palms grew sweaty as he swallowed the lump in his throat. god, he really hated being so vulnerable. “i want you to know that i,” he paused, his eyes scanning over her face and his hands reaching out for hers, “i’m in love with you.” he admitted, his tongue poking out to wet his lips. he’d never been this straight forward and he just hoped that arielle felt the same way.
@ariellexkane
The comfortable bubble that once used to safely protected their little world burst with such force. Arielle hadn’t quite gauged amount of blowback that would soon blow through their whirlwind romance. Breathing in the quiet, she toyed with the edge of the pink satin jacket that had sat on her shoulders earlier in the evening. She couldn’t find the words to describe the panic that curled over her fragile shoulders. Sabrina knew the truth. It almost astounded her how long it had taken their perfectly posed sleuth to sniff out the scoop. Her legs dangled off the edge of Rhett’s bed and barely touched the cool hardwood beneath them. How are we going to tell Hadley? Will she hate me forever? The thought sat heavy on her chest as they both sat stoic in the stale twilight. Her eyes shifted from the cuff of her jacket back to his sterling gaze. “You’re one hundred percent right. We need to figure this out..” what’s there to figure out? You love him you idiot. Arielle internally scolded her dim witted retort. She had struggled with this relationship for weeks. Her head and her heart held vastly different arguments. The lines she crossed sleeping with him were enough to be completely written off by Hadley; which deep distressed her. Although, her heart ached at the thought of a life without him. A frown formed on her lips at the rushing heft of his words. Stop things here. “I completely understand that you think we crossed a line and I understand that you don’t want anything seri--” Her crinkled brows unfurled at his confession and the gusto in her own halted. “What did you say?” Arielle felt like she was spinning but her heart rejoiced.
“If this is some cruel joke, I will twist your nipples right off your body.” She scooted closer to him as she pulled his hand to her heart. “I love you too, Rhett. Which is very scary to admit out loud because I’ve loved you for a long time. So, if this is a halloween ha ha--I’m twist first and cry later.”

rhett, himself, had a hard time resisting arielle. especially since their relationship had escalated from a friendship to something more. she’d always been beautiful to him but he saw her a completely different light now that their relationship had been on a different level for quite a long time. she consumed a lot of his thoughts - her smile, the way she looked at him, her curves, all of it. there wasn’t anything he didn’t like about arielle. he chuckled, “ever? like, you never stood a chance against me?” he wondered if his words along with the mix of alcohol was what brought them togther in the first place. he smirked, a pleased hum leaving his lips. “good.” he paused and captured her lips in a kiss after she looked back at him, “i don’t want anyone else looking at you anyways.” he was a little bit of the jealous type and he was sure she knew that. he sighed, his smile dropping slightly. “i know. i would’ve loved to dance with you without being questioned.” he reached up and tucked her hair behind her ear, “i’m sorry.” he added, his thumb rubbing over her cheek. “i think i could cut out early to spend time with my favorite girl.”
"Never.” Was it the tequila or her own courage seeping into her finality of her confession. Arielle compartmentalized most every aspect of her life with logic. From the way conducted herself in town to the way she felt about the people who breezed through her life. Rhett had always been a constant piece and forever the forbidden sin that she dreamt about. For the better half of their lives, she reminded herself that lusting after her best friend’s brother was an immortal sin. A line that couldn’t be crossed because the fragility of the situation. If things went wrong, everything would be compromised. So, she pushed it off. Arielle knew she needed her family before her heart needed the other half. “I never stood a chance, Rhett. I just never knew that you’d ever look at me like this so I never had to actively try.” Her courage blew away like the since faded sun as she buried herself into his stoic frame. “You’re very sexy when you’re jealous but there’s nothing to be jealous over. I promise,” she confirmed with a soft nod. “Next time. We’ll find a way to dance without the red flags or third degree.” Arielle leaned into the rough feeling of his hand tracing along her cheek. “You don’t have anything to be sorry about. It’s just life,” she chewed on her bottom lip. “Say it again.”

rhett really did want to be careful. the last thing he wanted was for the two of them to be exposed on the one night they were really meant to have fun but he couldn’t help but focus on her and nothing but her. he stopped listening to everything going on around them and he stopped worry about what could happen. instead, he thought about how tonight could turn for the better and how he loved being here in her company. he hated that he’d become so invested in something that wasn’t even…official. he knew she liked his company too, because they’d always been friends, but he really didn’t know how far her feelings went and he was genuinely curious about it. it was just that he couldn’t muster enough courage to ask. “i’m good at that, huh?” he teased, a little smile settling on his lips.
he nodded in agreement, “i do.” he poked his tongue out to lick his lips and scanned over her once more, obviously checking her out once she mentioned her cleavage. “i think it’s the right amount.” he agreed and looked back at her face. “yeah? well, i’m glad you like it. i was hoping you would.”
Arielle scoffed at his mirthful retort. Rhett really didn’t understand how hard he was to resist. Most days, she found herself unable to fight against the mystic tides of his lure. Everything about him ignited the curiosity wanderer in her soul. "Too good,” the words slipped so simply from her lips. “It’s almost unfair at how smooth you are, Rhett. I can’t say I stood a chance,” the truth wasn’t so hard to swallow when she was so punch drunk off his presence. Arielle gasped audibly at his less than subtle glance; not that she minded. It felt nice to feel wanted. “Well good I’m glad that you agree. It’s not like I want anyone else to notice,” she fired back before peering over his shoulder to the chortling sounds of laughter drifting farther away to leave them completely alone in the shallows. “This sneaking around has it’s perk but...I’d like to be able to dance with you without it being weird. Not that it would be weird but..you know what I mean.” Arielle sighed before pulling back. “We don’t have a lot of time but I was wondering if you wanted to meet up later or cut out early. It’ll be a hard sell but I have a feeling the girls are a little distracted this evening and they won’t notice.”

Aubree felt like she was being held in by two thin pieces of fabric as well as hopes and prayers. The hopes held her tits in while the prayers made sure her pants didn’t split every move she made. Clearly, mistakes had been made but she knew she looked good. As long as she got laid tonight then all would be worth it. At least, she hoped. Well, that was until ten seconds ago when a man approached her with the worst pick up line ever. In fact, it had sent her straight to the bar for a drink to wash the memory away. “Someone honestly asked me if I wanted to look in his pants for a treat?” She told the nearest person beside her. “Let’s do a round of shots… Maybe two.”
Arielle watched and waited for the bartender to turn her way to finally order their drinks for the evening. Hadley was so much better at flagging them down. Arielle’s short stature didn’t exactly help her case. Turning her attention to the cool tone of the woman that stood stark against the dim crowd. “That sounds like a trick not a treat. Men just amaze me with their intellect in this city,” she turned her gaze up to Aubree. Hot damn. Her body perfectly chiseled like some greek goddess. It was hard to believe that someone so beautiful could not be desired by every living being. Not only was she hot but she also Rhett’s ex. His very talented and beautiful ex who broke his heart. She never understood why but she wasn’t going to be rude to the woman without knowing the full story.
“Pick your poison.”

rhett honestly thought he was being slick. he thought they both were but if anyone were really paying attention to the two of them, they probably would’ve noticed the way the two of them were looking at each other from across the room. he couldn’t help himself though. arielle looked amazing in her costume and he wanted nothing more than to pull her close to him and to kiss on her. he hated that he had to control himself but he knew it was for the best. at least until the two of them discussed what this was and how they should break the news to hadley, if it became anything that was. “it’s alright,” he reassured, pausing for a second as they held onto each other. “it was worth the wait.” he promised, his forehead leaning against hers. a chuckle fell from his lips and he tilted his head so that he could kiss her again. humming, he slowly pulled away from her lips again. “and it’s not every night i get to kiss a pink lady.” he added, his hands resting on her waist while his thumbs traced circles over the exposed skin. “i like this outfit of yours.”
The rippling silver hue cast across the indigo streaked sky provided such beautiful cover. There was just enough light to illuminate his features and cloak their melded position. Arielle allowed the feeling of his body to saturate each one of her senses with a numbing speed. First her gaze no longer sat upon the horizon to ensure their safe passage in the night. Then the drifting sounds of the people cheering in a chorus of drunken glee grew quieter against the raspy sound of his voice. She bought into him. Every piece of her departing from the caution that laced her armor to accept whatever he could give her. Even if tonight was the last moment they shared. Arielle didn’t want to get caught up on the fantasy because loving someone who didn’t feel the same had been a narrative she fought hard to keep from repeating. Her heart battered from the longest fight of her life. Although, for now, she allowed the tip of her sword to bow to the solid ground and for her heart to beat in sync with his. “There you go talkin’ smooth,” she whispered. “Although, I must agree--definitely worth the wait.” Arielle felt the warmth blossoming on her cheeks. “The collision of two worlds, I suppose.”
“Do you?” Her hands resting comfortably along the back of his neck. It would look better on the floor but that’s neither here nor there. “I thought it was a bit too much cleavage but Sabrina insisted that it was the right amount. I have to say I am enjoying the sight of you in a tunic. I didn’t know I like medieval garb but maybe I just like you in it.”

Secrets are not sexy. Unless they’re tall, blonde, sweet, wonderful secrets.
Arielle’s finger traced the finely spun rim of her rum and coke. It wasn’t everyday that she splurged and did anything remotely fun. Adrianna happily encouraged her to let her hair down because she was perfectly content sending the weekend with her best friends. Who doesn’t love their local girl gang. Arielle watched the literal goddesses that illuminate her life enjoying themselves with a heavy heart. How could she hide something like this from her people? After everything they’ve been through, didn’t they deserve her transparency?
“I’ll have another--sans the coke. Make it a double,” she said swiftly before settling into her stool with a deflated sigh.

location: monster mash with: @ariellexkane
Hadley had come off the dance floor where she’d been dancing with Davis and headed to the spot she, Sabrina and Arielle were using as their “home base” for the night only to find her shorter best friend missing in action. While she scanned the room, she couldn’t help but think Ari had slipped off somewhere. After all, the pink jackets weren’t hard to spot, even in a crowded bar like this. Hadley waited for a bit before checking her phone and finding nothing. When she looked up, Arielle was making her way back to the table empty-handed and Hadley frowned at her. “Where did you sneak off to, missy? I was hopin’ I could steal you away for a dance but it looks like someone beat me to it.”
Arielle felt the warm finally beginning to fade from her cheeks. Her thumb swiped delicately beneath her bottom lip to ensure there was no visible smudge of her lipstick. Her brief rendezvous wasn’t exactly very brief; not that she regretted it. Slipping back between the now merging couples surfacing for air, she lifted her hand to catch Hadley’s. “Did I miss the big dip?” She questioned with a soft nudge. Arielle rolled her eyes with a short huff. “I had to pee and I got swept up into a long drunken conversation with Ashleigh Breeland. A lot of runny mascara and snot. I’ll have you the long and short of it. How about you little miss, is tonight everything that you wanted it to be?”

rhett had been trying to find the perfect moment to steal arielle away for a minute. he’d been watching her on and off throughout the night, trying not to seem too obvious that he was into her and there were moments he caught her looking too. which, made him feel good. he took in a deep breath, rubbing his hands together as he waited for her to meet him outside. he knew they had to be careful because gossip traveled fast in this town and the last thing he wanted was for something to get back to his sister and for hadley to start questioning things. as she walked outside and he noticed her looking around for him, he moved behind her and snaked an arm around her waist, pulling her back against them and away from the crowd of people gathered outside of the front entrance. once he was face to face with her, he smiled slightly. “i’ve been waiting all night for a moment with you.” he admitted and looked around to make sure the coast was clear before giving her a kiss. “and i’ve been waiting all night to do that too.” he breathed out.
@ariellexkane
The bass rolled the speaker with such intense ferocity. Arielle did her best to weave through the dense crowd of bodies without being splashed with some miscellaneous beverages. The downside to being short, right? One wrong tip of the elbow and she’d be doused in some cheap craft beer. The bright pink satin jacket that draped along to her shoulders had made her an easy mark for the two other wonderful women in her life. A well made plan for them to never lose sight of each other; even if that was what one of them wanted. Arielle watched Hadley twirl about the tight dance floor with Davis and Sabrina acting too cool for school with Travis. A sweet reprieve from her own longer for a man she didn’t exactly have rights to want. Selfishly, she allowed herself to steal a couple glances in Rhett’s direction. A small taste for her hungry eyes. While Sabrina and Hadley were occupied in the throng of people, this was her moment to follow his shadow out side of the Swinging Door. Arielle thanked the bartender for the cool burning shot of tequila before she departed any sane thought to follow her heart.
Stepping out into the brisk evening, she sighed in relief that the clarity the chill provided. Arielle brushed the hair out of her eyes before feeling two strong arms pulling her in. All of the fright that coiled in her bones subsided at the silken sound of his voice. “Pft you know me, the belle of the ball, I’m sorry for keeping you waiting.” Her hands slotted around his neck to keep their little bubble small. Her lips brushed along his with a delighted grin. “Would it be bad of me to say I was too? It’s not every night a girl gets to kiss a king, right?”

there was something about arielle that made this different from any woman he’d ever been with and he wasn’t really sure what. maybe it was because what happened between them was so unexpected. she was in the same category as sabrina for such a long time and then after his breakup with aubree, something changed. he never blamed her for their breakup, not once. aubree ended things simply because she questioned his trust and if she couldn’t trust him, what was the point of their relationship? now he had arielle and sure, they weren’t dating but she still made him feel something. something exciting and something he hoped he feel more of. this wasn’t just rebound sex anymore, this had turned into something else and she was now a big part of his life and she consumed the majority of his thoughts.
rhett rubbed over her sides softly, comfortable with her in his lap. in fact, the closer she was to him, the happier he was. he wished he could be completely honest with her about how he felt but he was afraid it’d scare her off and that she wouldn’t want more with him. he was just afraid of being vulnerable and letting yet another girl break his heart. he leaned into her touch and then a soft chuckle rumbled out from his chest, “i promise i’ll stick to your side. you know, for the most part.” he teased, his fingers pinching her sides gently. he nodded slowly, his body leaning into hers. “i took a picture. my phone’s charging so i’ll have to show you later.” he answered before he scooped some food into her mouth. he let out a content him. “there’s nothin’ else i want more.”
“Well then I guess I would be open to learning a thing or two. I wonder how many people will be laid off when I become a true chef and no longer eat out,” she said teasingly. Arielle was content with being here in his arms. The gnawing guilt nipped at the less selfish parts of her. Arielle knew that she shouldn’t keep something like this best friend or her roommate. Hadley was one of the most essential pieces of her life’s fabric. How exactly does one explain that she had broken the cardinal rule about family members? Arielle selfish didn’t want to ruin this..whatever it was. Rhett had been scorned by love and her own heart couldn’t exactly handle anymore disappointment. So, instead, they both danced around each other and found comfort in the shadows.
Arielle allowed her eyes to drift closer as they embraced. She toyed with the collar of his shirt, drawing tight circles along the nape of his neck. “I can’t wait to see it. You really did make that person’s day, you know that? That’s so wonderful,” she truly believed the smallest thing could really make or break someone. “Really? Not even sex,” she challenge with a soft chuckle.

he was waiting for the question. he was waiting for her to ask why he wasn’t interested in any other woman that looked his way. he wasn’t even sure if he should be honest. rhett wasn’t sure if honesty was a good idea when it came to how they felt about each other. the last thing he wanted was to open up only to get his heart broken. arielle had helped put him back together again but if he lost her, he knew he’d fall apart and have to start back from square one. he lifted his shoulders up in a shrug, “maybe but hey, i’m content with the way things are.” rhett knew he cared about arielle and to an extent he never expected to. everything that happened between them had been unexpected since their hook up but he wouldn’t go back and changed a thing either.
a small chuckle escaped rhett’s lips, “raw? you have to make sure they’re tan on both sides.” he pointed out. it was hard to really explain outside of showing her. personally, he’d always been a hands on learner but he wasn’t sure if arielle was the same way. “come on, maybe between me and your teenager, we can give you some kind of cooking lesson.” he held one hand up and drew an x over his heart, “Cross my heart. i won’t make fun of you.” he reassured, giving her a small smile as his hand dropped back down to her waist. he relaxed physically at the feeling of her fingers in his hair and let out a sigh of content. “they teared up. it was sweet.” he admitted and watched as she lifted fork toward him. he smiled and opened his mouth, taking the bite she’d offered him. this was…intimate. sometimes the two of them would have these moments and he liked them, a lot. after he swallowed the bite down, he took a sip of his own glass of wine and looked back at her. she was so…beautiful and he couldn’t stop himself from leaning in and placing a small kiss on her lips. his hand cupped the side of her neck as his lips moved against hers for a moment and then he pulled back and picked up the fork, offering it toward her. “now, you.”
Arielle had become accustom to disappointment. Most of her “attempts” at any real adult normalcy had ended in awkward exchanges or silence. She had written off finding love because she didn’t need it to feel fulfilled. Most men these days weren’t exactly up to becoming an instant father to a teenager and assumed such silly expectations of her. Arielle’s life revolved around her business and ensure the happiest of her tight circle of bad ass women. She was content with that. Rhett’s place in her life threw off every system she put forth to ensure maximum success. She craved him when he was near and missed him when he was gone. Who would have thought she would allowed someone to hold such power over her heart.
I didn’t but he did it anyway.
“Good,” she hummed. Arielle’s feet dangled on either side of him as she straddled his lap comfortably. Arielle chuckled at his surprise and drummed up a thoughtful hum at his tip. “Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose. I didn’t want it to burn so underdone seemed better than nothing.” Arielle tucked a few stray strands of hair behind his ear. “I know that if you two combine forces, I am going to get made fun of for the rest of my life. My ego cannot withstand that so you have to promise me that you’ll go easy. If Adrianna encourages you, you stay and stick to your Arielle’s defense club standards, alright? I am trusting you not to disappoint.” The soft grin blossomed along her lips at the capacity of his ability to process such intimacy. She had her share of heartfelt stories but for the most part it was the wonderful details of embarking on a new life; not closing a chapter on ones life. “I’m glad that they the most compassionate artist to go on that journey with them. I bet it looks kick ass too,” she whispered against his lips. Her brows perked up at his delicate reciprocation. “Why thank you,” she gingerly took the food into her mouth before laying her head on his shoulder.
“Can we stay like this for a minute?”

Hadley was not one to let any opportunity to tease Sabrina pass by without a valiant effort on her part to partake. “Agreed,” she said with a nod in Arielle’s direction. “You and a cowboy, of all men, Brina. Coffee is big. It’s the perfect way to get to know someone, so entirely romantic without any of the trappings of boring, stuffy dates. Ooh,” she said, holding a finger in Sabrina’s direction. “What did he order? Was it something fancy? Is he a hipster cowboy? Or was it all manly and rugged, a nice cup of black with ‘one sugar please, ma’am’?” She did her best to mimic John Wayne’s iconic voice, lowering her voice and dragging out her already southern drawl into something even slower.
Without a doubt, the best time of her week was whatever she got to spend with her girls. Granted, living under Arielle’s roof really made that time a lot more frequent, but Hadley wasn’t one to complain. The blonde’s face lit up when Ari spoke of the house she’d been trying to close on. “Oh, that was a cute house, too! Tons of potential, just like the relationship those two had. I can’t wait for the baby announcement to come in the mail. I know we never met but I really felt connected to Piper and Jaxon.” Hadley would always live vicariously through Ari and Brina, it was just how her life was meant to be. “I expected to have to argue my way through a meeting with the baseball coach but he ended up being really nice and supportive,” she said before shrugging, tucking her hands into the pockets of her lightweight jacket. “Can we get Thai? I’m craving Thai.”
Sabrina strived to maintain her composure as they insisted on more details of the encounter, endeavoring to express an air of nonchalance. In fact, she’d been attempting to regard the events that transpired as a casual rendezvous with a handsome stranger and nothing more than that. But that wasn’t entirely true. As determined as she was, she had to admit – to herself at least – that there was nothing casual about meeting Travis the other day. Furthermore, she was certain her girls could see right through her facade, there wasn’t much she could conceal from them. Didn’t mean she wasn’t still going to try.
“There was nothing romantic about it,” a lie “We sat and talked, it was entirely informal” another lie “I still support the claim that men are and forever will be, utter garbage. Nothing good can come out of investing your time in them”. She tilted her chin up as if she were quite literally looking down on the species and was unimpressed. But she could feel their eyes boring into her and after a few seconds her resolved crumbled. “Okay fine, maybe I flirted a little and maybe we’re seeing each other again. Happy?”. Sabrina wasn’t sure why she felt so foolish, whether it was her poor venture to withheld the truth when she lived to gossip or if it was because she was admitting to being swayed so easily. “His name is Travis” Travis, Travis Kincaid she could hear him saying “And he takes two sugars in his coffee, just fyi”
Desperate to change the subject and genuinely ecstatic – and intrigued – by what was going on in her girls lives she let out a tiny squeal in celebration of Arielle’s big sale. “I knew it! I told you didn’t I? No potential buyer is a match for you, you absolute queen” she smacked a gentle kiss on her cheek, beaming with pride. Sabrina held such high regard for the direction their careers had taken. They were all, essentially, masters in their fields and passionate about the work. There was nothing more satisfying than seeing the people he cared about reaching their goals and handling their professions with effortless flair. Sabrina’s brow quirked in Hadley’s direction. “The baseball coach? The cute one? Nice and supportive, interesting choice of words” it seemed she was instinctively slipping into reporter mode. “Thai sounds lovely, I’ve been craving that curry again for weeks now”
@hadley-mcdaniel @ariellexkane
Arielle watched the tight lipped response that ebbed from Sabrina with a sweet roll of the eyes. “I may have been born at night but it wasn’t last night. You’re lying straight through your teeth,” she pinched Sabrina’s bum with her thumb and forefinger. “If it was so straight forward and formal you would have been talkin’ all that ‘I’m so bored’ nonsense over text. You were radio silent!” She nudged Hadley with her hip. “I think our girl has a crush on a real man not just some cheap plastic from Spencers. Not that the plastic man wasn’t beneficial--I’ve had my best orgasms with myself and my pretty pink dildo.” Arielle snorted. All of the joy that ebbed between them faded momentarily at the sound of his name off her lips. Travis Kincaid. It seemed they all had the same taste in one respect of another.
“This is huge! All of this good news is making me crave a little spicy pad thai.” Turning her head, she took in the unexpected turn on Hadley’s day. “Davis is a softie beneath it all. Why didn’t you tell me that you were meeting with him. I would have briefed him about the levels of hell he would experience if he gave you a hard time.”

She didn’t know if Arielle would agree to dinner. The worst thing she could say certainly wouldn’t be no, but she didn’t expect them to start hashing out old days in the middle of her office. At least not today. “I’m up for anything,” she shrugged her shoulders, “Though I’m lookin’ to satisfy some onion ring cravings. I have no idea where they came from, but they just sound so damn good.” She gave Arielle a smile, hoping to keep the tension to a minimum between the two of them. At least for a singular lunch period.
"Onion rings and a milkshake seems like a good remedy for the midday blues,” she gently rose from her desk with a demure grin. Arielle promised herself at the start of the year that she would try harder to more open to forgiveness. It had never been her strongest suit. People were supposed to be redeemable but trust was fragile. Almost like thinly blown glass with one wrong move and it would shatter into irrevocable pieces. “I bet we can get the booth by the window before the school lets out.”

Hadley: I'll give you one free shake later to make it up.
Hadley: You got this. Peace and collected zen are your middle name today. I am!! It's going to be fun.
Arielle: You know just how to get me going, Hads.
Arielle: Yes and if not I will take it out on a bottle of wine after dinner. Good! If he gets handsy and you're not about it, which he won't because he's a good guy, I'll come down and break all of his fingers.
