Newgrange

While known to Irish people, Newgrange for one reason or another is less known internationally. The monument dates back five thousand plus years, making it older than the pyramids of Egypt. This stone-age tomb’s origins are not fully known. However, the craftsmanship of this ancient landmark must be truly seen to be appreciated. Remarkably the builders of this tomb aligned the passages of the tomb to remain in darkness except for the winter solstice where the light will pass through for a brief moment. This expansive tomb is 85 meters wide and 13 meters high, all formed from stone and earth; it has remained unchanged for millennia.

Day 3 Kilkenny is a medieval town famous for its viking settlement, Smithwick’s ale brewery and Castle. Next take a tour of the Smithwicks brewery, a fascinating and delicious tour which ends with a sampling of their incredible ales. Kilkenny Castle is a phenomenal and ancient castle inhabited by the Norman invaders, the Butler family occupied the castle until the 1900’s when they left it to the Irish people. A tour and photos are simply a must when at this beautiful castle and romantic estate.

Day 4 An excursion to Newgrange is a thrilling and vastly underrated experience. This passage tomb is older than the pyramids yet the builders of this tomb aligned the passage astrologically so that light enters perfectly only on the winter solstice. This site is a true wonder of the world and must be seen to be appreciated. It has lasted centuries despite being built entirely from interlocking stones without any binding agent such as concrete. Tickets are only ten euro from the Bru na Boinne visitor centre. It makes for an unforgettable day out.

The Burren 100 mile scenic loop

The burren scenic loop is one of the most diverse and dramatic drives found anywhere in the world. A popular choice for Ireland travel, it’s harsh rocky landscape is otherworldly, being listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Burren or “Boireann” in its native Irish means ‘great rock’, some of the earliest recorded evidence of human settlements remain here, with a remarkable portal tomb being dated to 3800 BC. These remarkable tombs are a must visit when passing through the Burren area.

After passing through the Burren National Park you will be brought through Ballyvaughan, home to the ancient Ailwee Caves and Falconry centre. These incredible caves were rediscovered by farms in search of lost sheep. To their good fortune they uncovered ancient animal remains of Irish brown bears, frozen underwater waterfalls and incredible rock formations. A tour of the caves is extremely affordable and lasts one hour, after this see the spectacular range of raptors that call this place home. Bird demonstrations take place multiple times throughout the day and for those after an incredible experience we cannot recommend booking a hawk walk enough.

Travel south from here and you will pass through Lisdoonvarna , a town renowned for its traditional matchmaking festivals for farming families going back generations. Next you will reach the incredible beaches of Lahinch. You simply must stop here and stretch your legs no matter the season this beach is one of the most beautiful in all of Ireland.

You are now nearing the world famous Cliffs of Moher, some of the largest in all of Europe standing 700 feet above the crashing waves below and spanning miles. These cliffs are truly breathtaking and will leave you in awe at the power and beauty of nature. On a clear day in favourable conditions stare towards the horizon and you will see the Aran Islands. These islands are one of the few places left in Ireland where Irish is spoken as a first language.

This Gaeltacht (Gael- tackt) is a short ferry from Clare to these islands but you travel far more in time than in miles. These islands will give you a taste of Ireland in days gone by with their donkey cart roads, stonewalls and woolen jumpers. On the largest island, Inis Mór you will find a spectacular ancient fort which must be seen to be truly appreciated. It uses a cliff face as a natural wall to guard against incoming enemies. Continue northwards on your return to the mainland , admire the natural charm of Farnore and you will find yourself shortly back where you began.

Spike Island, Cork

Spike Island is located in the heart of Cobh in County Cork and boasts plentiful landscapes and breathtaking gardens. Spike Island was formally the world’s largest prison but museums, scenic walks, cafes, and shops can now be explored during your visit to Spike Island. According to Spike Island, you should leave 3.5 hours for your visit to fully explore the picturesque Island. However, shorter visits can be arranged on request. 

There are many transportation options available getting to Spike Island. If you are visiting from Cork City Centre, the Cobh Connect bus will bring you to Cobh where you will then embark on a ferry to reach the Island from Kennedy Pier in Cobh. Parking is recommended at the Five Foot Way (15 minute walk) or Cobh Cathedral car park (15 minute walk).

Island Hopping in Bantry, West Cork

Whiddy Island

Whiddy Island is located off Bantry Harbour and is perfect for any day out on a remote island. Whiddy Island boasts it’s tranquil hills allowing the perfect backdrop for rural photography. If you are looking for an exercise filled trip, there are bikes available for hire.

Garnish Island

According to the locals, Garnish is a ‘seeing is believing’ Island which will no doubt be a once in a lifetime experience when visiting displaying a cocktail of colors surrounded in an elegant with walking trails available to explore. During the summer sunshine, you will be able to relax and enjoy the rays.

Top 10 things to do along the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland

The Wild Atlantic Way is a 2600 km touring route along the West Coast of Ireland. A popular choice for those on a vacation in Ireland and for self drive tours, it it known to be one of the longest defined coastal route in the world. The route winds it’s way all along the Irish west coast from the Inishowen Peninsula in the north down to the picturesque town of Kinsale, County Cork, in the south. Here we have put together our top picks for things to do along the Wild Atlantic Way.

1. Bastion, Kinsale

Run by husband and wife couple Paul and Helen, this moody and intimate restaurant puts Irish seafood on a pedestal. Bastion’s natural but playful flavors afforded them a Michelin star. Start your Wild Atlantic Way journey in Kinsale with a Cannon of lamb with aubergine and wild garlic or Roasted Cod Fillet Jerusalem artichoke, apple and iberico. This simple luxury, perfectly executed will gently nourish on your Wild Atlantic expedition.

2. Listen to Traditional Music

The west is known for it’s ‘craic agus ceol’ (fun and music). Nurse a delicious pint of Guinness or local IPA while listening to talented musicians sing trad favorites. The beauty of these nights is that the non-invasiveness of the music allows for and welcomes conversation and fun.

3. Skellig Michael

To the Romans and the monks who lived there, this was the very edge of the known world. Skellig Michael is as wild and west as you can get. This majestic island rising sharply out of the ocean is home to ancient monastic beehive huts and colonies of rare birds. It’s beauty and other worldliness made it the perfect backdrop for the Star Wars movie franchise to use it as a shooting location.

4. Soak up the Sun

Grab a picnic, a beach rug and maybe a book and plant yourself on the white sands of Inch Beach in Kerry, Barleycove in West Cork or Fanore in County Clare and watch the world go by. The Wild Atlantic Way is home to Ireland’s most exceptional beaches, there is nothing as relaxing as listening to the breaking of waves while a gentle cooling breeze passes over you. Swim and bathe in the pristine waters of the west coast or grab a surfboard and catch some of Ireland’s best waves in Mullaghmore, county Sligo.

5. Mizen Head

Ireland’s most southerly point. Mizen Head in West Cork offers spectacular sea views from its retired signaling station. It’s visitor centre and tours are a very popular tourist attraction along with the incredible bridge spanning from cliff to cliff over the breaking sea.

6. Linnalla Ice Cream, Clare

No one does dairy like Ireland and no one does better ice cream than Linalla. Nestled between their farm and the beach, this cafe makes some of Ireland’s best ice cream, smoothies and milkshakes. You can even see the short horn cows in the fields whose milk is used. This cafe is very friendly for all its visitors with the majority of their specialty ice creams being gluten and egg free!

7. Ailwee Caves

The Ailwee Caves visitor centre is a perfect day out for young and old alike. Despite descending hundreds of meters the guided cave tour home to ancient Irish brown bears and waterfalls totally accessible. Once finished the tour, the Ailwee Caves Bird of Prey Centre has the most extensive bird collection in Ireland with multiple daily exhibitions and also the possibility to book private hawk walks for a truly magical experience. For the more refined pallet the cave is home to multi award winning cheeses and runs tasting and making workshops during the summer months.

8. The Burren

The Burren is a UNESCO world heritage site stretching over 250km. This karst landscape is home to unique wildlife and flora found nowhere else. This ancient rocky and alien landscape is also home to Dolmen portal graves most being at least 5,000 years old… older than the pyramids of Egypt! For the photographers amongst you this will provide incredible wide open vistas and incredible landscape images.

9. Horse Riding, Sea Trails

Ride horses on beach dunes and through water overlooking the imposing mountain of Benbulben. Suitable for all experience types and all conditions. 10. Aran Islands
