I’m super excited to finally know what the “since 1797 persona 5″ raglan shirt says! It’s “since 1797 NEWSOUTHWALES”. Thanks to @necroalx for giving me the texture!
In 1797, New South Wales was a British penal colony, fitting with the themes of criminals and imprisonment in Persona 5.
Searching online, I found: https://jenwilletts.com/convict_ship_britannia_1797.htm, which discusses the convict ship Britannia which landed in New South Wales in 1797. Elsewhere, the site said the ship also carried political prisoners.
There was an attempted mutiny on board. People were kept in irons and some were even lashed to death. There’s a record of the inquiry into those deaths:
(The spelling above is either a typo or OCR error that doesn’t appear elsewhere in the document. I don’t know if “Britannia” is an oblique Code Geass reference or just an easy enough coincidence here. Probably the latter as there’s no evidence 1797 even refers to this incident. I like it though because it also acts as a hint towards what Shido’s Palace is. Okay, that’s really tenuous now.)
RyujiBlades on twitter says the fonts used are RaglanPunchStd for the 1797 and Matisse Pro UB for everything else, both fonts being from the Japanese foundry Fontworks.
Zinzanzelf on AO3 pointed out that MysticDistance read the shirt text in a tweet reply back in 2017, but that it didn’t come up unless you actually knew to search for “since 1797 new south wales”. Here’s hoping it will be more findable when people ask “What does Joker’s 1797 shirt say?” or “What is the meaning of Joker’s hometown shirt?” Probably not though… so many ways to phrase the question!
