Favourite moments #5:
Boy do I have a lot I could say about this scene. And yet, at the same time I have a hard time articulating what I like about it exactly. I like the glimpse at Rose in a less idealized light, I like the complicated and morally grey conflict, I like how the show was willing to shock the audience by having the pacifist main character straight up shank someone, even if it was in self defense.
I’m pretty sure this is when we really start to peel back the layers of who Steven’s mother really is, and for poor Steven it’s essentially a shove into the deep end in terms of dealing with her pedestal getting torn down. His philosophy of peace is challenged as well at the same time. It’s not as if either party is bad or good, it’s a clash of principles, and both sides’ reasoning is understandable. Unfortunately Bismuth takes things too far and Steven is forced to defend himself at great cost.
There’s so much about this scene that comes together to provide as much impact as possible, the lighting, the colours, the voice acting, the music. The visual of the bubble popping as Steven gets his first “kill” so to speak, like the bubble symbolizes one more aspect of his innocence that’s being destroyed (that sounds so morbid when I type it out but idk how else to word it). Corrupted gems are one thing, poofing a fellow crystal gem who if fully sentient and in control of her faculties is something entirely different. And Steven has said himself that for him seeing someone poof is like seeing them die. You can see in his face that this time is likely no different. It comes back to haunt him in Mindful Education, and I’m sure it’s something that’s lingered with him ever since it happened.
It feels a bit strange to say that a scene which traumatizes Steven is a favourite scene of mine, but sometimes my reasons for liking a scene don’t necessarily make emotional sense. It’s just a damn good scene and a damn good episode, what can I say. Sorry Steven.
