To get an idea of how it would appear and feel if reversed, I wanted to see this in viewer mode. I wanted to bring my book to life and used this website from my other course. Through this trial I got to see what worked best and what didn't if looked at this way. Very happy and proud with how it turned out!!

Written Analysis - A Tale of Two Cities
ARDN516: Image Production Year 1, 2022
Responding to the query "Where in the world am I?" using the phrase "Who Am I and What Story Can I Tell?" For this project, I decided to go on the path of documentary photography, which inspired me. I've been striving to record the world as it is throughout time from thoughts that I've developed from my formative project and the comments I received. ‘Creating situations that don't demand notice.’
It was difficult at first to portray "Who I am?" and the narrative I intended to tell during the shooting process was tricky as I always tend to overthink my plans. I was aware that I wanted to highlight my upbringing and current situation. Showing viewers, the truth about my life's beginnings and where it has taken me. Carrying on with the contrast between South Auckland and the Auckland CBD serves as a window into reality. The new and old aspects of the place I call home. My photobook captures the rawness and stereotypes of what South Auckland is like through this I wanted to showcase my home. Capturing through cracks, doors, and construction materials to give the viewer a glimpse of life while the opposite side displays more homes. This was referenced in support of the phrase "when one door closes, another opens," which I wholeheartedly believe. Along this, I also photographed homeless people living on the streets, evening sports games, traffic on the motorway, graffiti, and my dad working on his car. Coming from this background has provided me with several humble beginnings, a quick transition into university, and the ability to leave home, all of which have been significant steps this year. There are obstacles as the oldest daughter, sister, and grandchild on both sides. With so much weight already on my shoulders, this step of moving was a major decision to make with my family’s support and dad's final say. It has brought even more opportunities outside of the home through university, relationships, and extracurricular activities. I end up displaying the Auckland CBD as a result of transitions on the motorway. 'In the Heart of the City.' The clean, modern city with tonnes of entertainment, little crime, and a variety of housing options. Waking up to police sirens, fire engines, and ambulances in the early hours of the morning, as well as presenting various events at Aotea Square, creates a news-filled environment.
Through an unbiased viewpoint, I altered my best images and modified them to Black and White/Monochrome Scheme. I wanted all of the photos to seem the same, all as one because they are all related to me in some manner. I didn't want the colours to distract from the beauty of the image or the authenticity of my voyage between the two stories of my cities, but I made a decision that prevented that from happening. Living proof of a tale of two cities.
I loved and appreciated this project. I was not only able to capture many photographs of my concept about myself, but I also went to display the many stories of what it is like through unseen corners. Learning to appreciate what we have or where we started can get you anywhere with hard work and determination. This is my story, and I cannot wait to capture more.

Vanessa Green
Many of the faces and locations in Vanessa's pictures will be recognisable to people who live around Tamaki Makaurau's central outskirts. Vanessa's subjects are the very things that make up the photographer's own life, and she tries to represent them as authentically as possible. These things include artists and entrepreneurs, architecture and decor, natural areas and urban structures, friends and strangers.
“I think everyone has an amazing space; it’s just a matter of capturing that — that’s the beauty of it,” -  Vanessa Green.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was drawn to Vanessa's Home Portraits photographs because they challenge us to consider the subject's physical identity as well as how their inner life has been projected onto the surroundings. Meaningful collections  wall art and posters, bookcases crammed with a list of personal interests, work spaces set up with instruments of the trade and inspiration, and bedrooms decorated with pride in one's heritage and fond memories.

Trial 3: Experiment in Lightroom Classic
Tumblr media
Although I've recently learned that there are pre-made templates you can use to present them better, this is my first official attempt at layering them out. However, several files were messed up, and as a result, the best 19 photographs were chosen.

Week 11 - Trial 2 Contact Sheet: Top 16 + Edited
I reduced them even though some of them were duplicates since they had been cropped or had their Black and White Settings slightly altered. Some pictures seem work yet I'm still not getting it. I will need to go back and really consider what makes the ideal book rather than just choosing something that is aesthetically attractive but has no connection to my story. I'm having a lot of trouble with this, and overanalyzing doesn't help, especially when it comes to laying them down quickly in Lightroom Classic.

Week 11 - Trial 1 Contact Sheet: Best Photos + Edited
I selected my favourite images for this project from In Class Tasks, SDL, and additional photography taken outside of class. Since I've used Adobe Light Room before and it has always been my go-to programme, I utilised it to edit all of my photos. So far, I like how everything fits together, though choosing the ideal option for telling my story will be difficult.

Trial 1: Digital book (Lightroom Classic)
Tumblr media
A rough idea of how it would look and how I might approach things. Still attempting to organise all of my phots and get used to this application. As of right now, I believe I will continue using the Black and White Scheme and revise my story to see how it relates to me. I'm experimenting with how it may appear in black and white and colour, but I think it will look cluttered and dominate the narrative.

The Difference Between Monochrome and Black and White Photography
Monochrome photography is any photography that utilizes differing amounts of light instead of different colors to capture and represent images. Whereas standard color photography (known as polychrome) displays colors from across the spectrum, monochrome photography takes only one single color and uses a range of tones of that color.
This is the case in black and white photography, which uses varying shades of neutral gray instead of the actual colors of the objects photographed. Monochrome is not exclusively black and white, however. It can be achieved using varying shades of other colors like sepia or cyan.

Black & white photography, in my opinion, eliminates any color-related distractions and aids the spectator in concentrating on the subject, textures, shapes, and patterns, as well as the composition of the image. Black and white photography is, in my opinion, naturally expressive, which fits with my theme of images for the editing stage. An photograph naturally becomes more timeless and nostalgic when the colour is removed from it. Black & white photography forces us to pay attention to the image's narrative without getting sidetracked by colour.

Documentary Photography vs Street Photography
ART TERM:
DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY VS STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
Documentary photography is important in the process of documenting historical moments that may be significant both right now and in the future, as the meaning of an image may evolve. Documentary photographers frequently focus on social and political issues including injustice, conflict, and inequality.
Tumblr media
Although street photography is often characterised by an urban scene, documentary photography can also be shot in streets. At first look, street photography may appear to be an easier style to identify. Additionally, street photography allows for more artistic freedom for the photographer. They can capture the ideal image at the ideal time by carefully framing and composing their shots. Whereas street photography makes the location an integral component of the composition, documentary photography shoots wherever the main subject or theme requires.
Tumblr media
The obvious distinction is that, in contrast to documentary photography, street photography typically catches an unplanned moment in time and lacks a primary theme or subject. However, because they can provide a look into a scene from the past and serve as documents of social history, street photographs can—and frequently do—"acquire" value as documentary images over time. I feel that for this assignment I could use both styles as inspiration as they both connect to my story that I'm trying to convey.

Best Images of the week and edited in Light Room
I'm thrilled with how they came out, and after editing, they were even better. I'll be focusing more on documentary photography since I believe it will help me convey my story more effectively. I'm also starting to think that way when I shoot, especially if Im deciding to use the black and white/monochrome colour scheme.

Week 9 Contact Sheet: HOME
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to take a lot of pictures in my childhood home in the South over the weekend. I got ideas to take pictures via cracks, doors, and outside materials after being inspired by some of the shots through existing photographs and photo books. I made use of several techniques I had learned in class as well as my own creativity because I didn't have much time at home and wanted to make the most of the opportunity. I can say with confidence that I am pleased with how the shoot turned out.

Peter Black
Peter Black's images have been recognised in major public exhibitions and publications for over 30 years. His work can be found in the majority of New Zealand's main public collections as well as numerous significant private collections. Other significant aspects in Peter's body of work are the borders between photography, text, and cinema.
The Shops
Tumblr media
I particularly enjoyed his "The Shops" series overall. The work's apparent theme is New Zealand shops, which are vanishing, sad, beautiful, comical, lonely, desperately impoverished, and rich in spirit. However, it's possible that the piece is really about loss and change, with the shops serving as metaphors. A celebration of the ignored and the poetry of the everyday are also included.

Week 9: Reflect & Review
With one of my Graffiti concepts, I had another discussion with Raymond about how much I like photographing graffiti but didn't know how I could tie it to the assignment and how it was centred on me. He provided me some very valuable suggestions on relating it back to me by looking at the 5W's + H. If I were the one tagging—which I'm not—then the story would be quite different, and I believe the reason I got so caught up in this supposedly brilliant notion was because I liked the aesthetics of it more than the connection, which is the main focus of this evaluation. Which then lead me back to the drawing board on what other concepts I can explore.
