Final - A Child of Immigrants
This was the final selection of photos for my project. I tried to sequence them in a particular way so they flowed and did not double up with the same style of photos. The cover is contextual. We start outside. Then, we move inside. We see the iconic T-sauce. We make an order. The menu and drinks look back at us as we wait. Our food is being prepped. We feast. Finally, we are outside again. We get in the car. We leave. An ode to my past - a blurry memory that's ever so present.

Photo Book Test 4
At this point I had gone back to take the night shots I had wanted. I was able to create this photo book which I had shared with friends for feedback.
I was trying to cull photos and I had really mixed reviews which made the process harder. In the end I mostly followed my gut and went with photos I liked. I did take their feedback into consideration.

I was conflicted at this point, I didn't feel I had enough pictures to just showcase the takeaway - but I was also unsure whether the photos at home and in city had a place in my final project of a story to tell.

Where am I?
I know the takeaway is out west but where am I really. This map is a screen shot taken from nz post's postal code finder. The shop sits between 3 neighbourhoods. Massey, Ranui and Te Atatu South.
Don Buck Road stretches across the west. It's mighty long. I will try figure it out. Dominion Road I know is the longest and it's about 7km long.
Woweee Don Buck Road is about 5.4 km long based of the first and last postal numbers mapped on google.

Week 10 Project
The shoot I had planned didn't go accordingly. I had planned to go to a new location today to capture another angle to add to my story. I planned to go with a friend to help give me that extra layer of courage but she had a few unexpected things pop up today so was unable to join me. I really wanted to get some golden hour lighting but the weather took a bit of a turn. Once I got there I thought I'd pop in first to assess the situation. The shop was different to how I had remembered it. The shop looks much smaller now and perhaps the layout is different too. Though there were a few things that remained. The pressure cooker, the menu boards and a framed picture was still there. After having a quick chat I realised that all 3 sets of eyes staring at me were employees, the owner was not present. A customer walked in and I had to wait. The longer I deliberated the harder it got. I couldn't bring myself to ask if I could take photos. Once the customer left I also said my goodbye and I left. I left with a seed of regret having come all this way only to leave without asking. By this point.. the sun had set. I wanted to get some night shots of our first takeaway so I seized the opportunity. This night shot wouldn't require me to be bothersome. I was out of the house anyway ... google maps says it's 15 mins away. So, off I went back to Smith & Wong. Third times a charm. They looked busy once again which is always good. I only needed shots from the outside so I didn't make myself known to them. I thought about Saul and other abstract photos I had seen. I experimented, some shots were out of focus to get the desired outcome. I wanted to showcase what i remembered as a child at night. Bright box of light contrasted against the dark street of Don Buck Road.

Photobook's by Alec Soth
I KNOW HOW FURIOUSLY YOUR HEART IS BEATING
The colour of the blank page compliments the image - it feels intentional and deliberate. I see so much subtleness in his work and I like it. I will try to emulate this in my project.
ADVICE FOR YOUNG ARTISTS
Needless to say I really like his work. This photobook has notes on the left - they not only serve as advice but it speaks to the image as a caption of sorts. I would like to do something similar. I could use materials I remember from my childhood.

KASSEL DUMMY AWARD 2022
Shadow over Shadow by Vitor Casemiro
The yellow cover drew me in.
I'm not sure exactely what it was about but I think I got the jist of the theme based on the photos. Crime. In the 50s?
I liked the photos and how the colour of blank pages complimented the photos shown. For example a photo of a gun was paired with white page. The photo below of the light streaming in is paired with a black page. I think this adds to the photo and the story as the pages turned. I will consider this when creating my photo book.
A range of photo sizes were also used creating visual interest.

I plan to head to another part of my childhood memory. A roast takeaway store we once owned in Mt Roskill. I remember the distinct smell of agria potatoes deep fried in a pressure cooker. I wonder what I'll remember once I am there?

My notes from Ben Long's class on exposure where I learnt how the camera mechanism actually works as the light travels through the lens and into the view finder.
I also learn about a cameras dynamic range which explains what I have been experiencing and thought it was because I did not know how to operate the camera properly. Its perfectly normal as Natalie, my lecturer, told me once but now it has a name.

Week 9 Project Contact Sheet
I was feeling a bit stressed about the direction I was heading in but after having a chat with Natalie I felt better. I decided to commit to going back to the takeaway to shoot with my newfound perspective and style. I really wanted to go to the back of the kitchen to capture details from what I remembered as a child. I was quite nervous to return to this location because I did not want to inconvenience them by being in their way of work. I enlisted a friend for moral support and it made a world of difference. Thanks friend! I tried to go as soon as they opened in the hopes it wouldn't be so busy. I was wrong. When I got there I asked if I could shoot from the inside and he hesitated because they were so busy. He kindly suggested I come back at a later time. My friend had a tight schedule so I'd have to come back alone. We ordered some food, deliberated and during this time I started taking a few snaps from the outside where customers wait patiently. I tried to channel Saul Leiter. The images seemed to work quite nicely. I utilised the glass as much as I could. I tried to capture items I could think of when I was a child from the outside. Shooting from a low angle and height. The more I shot the more I thought how it wouldn't be a good use of time to drive home and drive back later in the day so I continued shooting from the outside as much as I could creatively do so.

Week 8 Project Contact Sheet
At this point, I felt time and weather really weren't on my side. It was very cold, again I did not wear enough clothing to keep me warm, the sky was grey - I had this negative mindset looming over me because I wasn't able to get to my shoot locations or have the light and shadows I wanted. I utilised the commute home from uni to make the most of it. I thought of Saul's work as encouragement - he shoots in bad weather. I can try too.

Mid Sem Break Project Contact Sheet
I thought I'd take the chance while I was at home to take some test images. Inspired by Kathy Ryan I was looking for spots of sunlight. Later on I found the sun had casted itself on the wall at home, creating this geometric shape which was visually compelling. I experimented with some night photography again at home to see what I could capture in a low light setting. After researching many photographers who shot in black and white I thought I'd have a go with the settings on my camera. It's interesting how you view things differently shooting this way - your only attention is on the contrast of black and white.
I head to another location which I like to frequent - Cornwall Park where I kept the B+W settings on to see what I could capture. By the end of the shoot I had forgotten that the images were also saved as raw files. I felt a sense of relief when I got home because not only had the raw files which were coloured but the experimental B+W photos in jpeg.

Books from the Library
Saul Leiter
... is a painter first and foremost, he was never formally trained as a photographer. His way of seeing the world is truly quite captivitating. I find it quite rare to like most of all the photos taken by a single photographer. He took many images and of course we see a selection but still so many of his selected pieces were captivating. He is now a favourite of mine and I think everyone should see his work.

His unconventional compositions, his eye for colour, light and abstractness, the simplicity and subtleness all make for a magical image.
I will use his style to guide me in my project.

Kathy Ryan
... is the former Director of Photography @ New York Times Magazine - this body of work was based in that office. These photos can be seen within the iconic square of Instagram - each photo captures light and shadow. Beautifully composed and if colour added to the overall image it was used. I love this book and Kathy's work.

Books from the Library
Before this class I had not heard of "contact sheets". This book was particulary helpful because it gave me a sliver of insight into how each of these photographers worked. It highlights their selection process and their thinking as they were taking the photographs. Many photos were taken but no more than a few were used.
Inge Morath's
...contact sheet with A Llama in Time Square
The composition of this image is well suited. The llama right dead in the centre and a perspective view of the street to give it context.
Rene Burri's
...contact sheet and photos of the Ministry of Health
Nice capture of shadow and light
