Raf Simons AW 2002 ‘Virginia Creeper’ Digi-Camo Oversized Sweater Raf Simons Fall / Winter 2002 collection presents itself as a conversation between man and nature. The collections namesake, a deciduous vine known as the “virginia creeper,” is representative of the daunting and alluring aspects within the wilderness. The vine is both mesmerizing in its flurry of vibrant colors, yet harmful when touched, and this duality is one humans have long been well aware of. From vast forests which bring us both awe and terror to the many predators which serve as both food and threat, nature persists in our most wondrous dreams and wildest fears. Raf incorporates Virginia Creeper with an array of earthly inspired colors in its knits, bombers and long coats. The models walk through a forested background in bark browns and nightly blacks paired with leafy greens and snow-like whites. Nordic sweaters are accompanied with see-through ponchos, oversized coats, and glistening puffer jackets often with an ominous hood to mystify the look. As the final model disappears into the staged forestry we are left with a collection both astonishing and eerie in nature. Garments in this collection are chemically treated to fade with excess body head and wear away on the human body, similar to the way the virginia creeper eats away other plants and structures that are in its way. Harley Davidson Leather Varsity, 1980’s This is a Vintage Harley Davidson Leather Jacket in a Varsity Style. The history of the varsity jacket can be traced back to 1865 when the Harvard baseball team added a big 'H' embroidered on their uniform gray flannel shirt. This became a tradition for the team captain to allow certain players who played in the most important games (Yale or Princeton) to keep the 'H' jerseys as an award. In the 1930s, the letter award started to appear on leather sleeved, wool-bodied jackets and so the varsity jacket was born. Iteration of the varsity jacket was made by Harley Davidson, the world famous Motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1903. It features leather sleeves, a leather back, a lining made from 50% nylon 50% acetate and an interlining made from 100% polyester staple fiber. Margiela is known for producing some of the most interesting, eye catch and unotherrdox garments in modern fashion history, taking regular wardrobe basically and completely flipping their construction to produce something un seen and utterly desirable. For his S/S 2005 collection for women there we want fine examples on this in the collection, with vest, cami tops and skirts that were all constructed in ways that took a second look to understand. Here is a fine example of Martins work, constructed in a soft grey striped cotton, most strikingly the garment gives the impression of two completely different sized cardigans crudely stitched together when they have been precisely woven to do so. With one side of the cardigan fitted to the body while the other allows for a much looser and oversized fit. The buttons are stitched on the fitted side which creates a ruched effect when buttoned up. Helmut Lang SS 1999 MA-1 Bomber This is an Archive Helmut Lang Black Cotton Bomber Jacket from the Spring/Summer 1999 collection. The bomber jacket is a staple piece of Helmut Lang’s work, and this fine example comes from one of the most important and transitive eras of his career. This minimalist MA-1 Bomber Jacket from 1999 predates his more famous 'bondage' strap bombers and conforms more to the traditional MA-1 style. Lang's design approach was becoming more influenced by the subversion of the streets, nightlife, and youth culture at this time. A result of that influence Lang takes on the military MA-1 bomber jackets which were being worn by teenagers and young adults, but elevated to the level of high fashion by reimagining the piece to it’s most sleek and simplest form. Made in Italy from a lightweight cotton fabric, the jacket features a vertical zipper opening, two diagonal pockets on the lower half of the front side, the famous MA-1 style sleeve pocket. The jacket also has hidden jetted zipper pockets on both the right and left side of the inside of the jacket. Made over 20 years ago this jacket would later become the blueprint for all bomber jackets made after it.
