This is of my favorite understated scenes in Sailor Moon S because it displays how Neo-Queen Serenity is still the same old Usagi on the inside. But for non-Japanese viewers it may be less obvious, so here’s an explanation!
Japanese has 3 writing systems: hiragana, katakana (collectively known as kana), and kanji. Hiragana and katakana are for phonetic sounds whereas kanji are logograms (or written characters that represent entire words). Japanese children learn hiragana and katakana first (along with common, easier kanji) before slowly being introduced to kanji throughout their schooling years. So if you’re learning Japanese and have a hard time with kanji, don’t feel bad, because actual native Japanese people aren’t expected to master it for a while either.
Anyway, a teenager like Usagi (and definitely an adult like Neo-Queen Serenity) is expected to know how to read and write at least common kanji, so the fact that Usagi wrote a letter entirely in kana is honestly hilarious.
