The thing about women's lack of class consciousness (the understanding of ourselves as a group of people with many shared political interests and shared circumstances which currently include still being pushed to the margins of public life and subject to patriarchal oppression) is that men already have their own sense of class consciousness. If most men have their choice of two people (one man and one woman) to hire, everything being equal, they will pick the man. The average man will help his male friends before his female friends if he doesn't believe he can have sex with those female friends. He will be more interested in what his male friends and peers and coworkers have to say and will take them more seriously. He will think of male coworkers before his female coworkers. He will choose in every aspect of his life to uphold the systems that so marginalize women because it is in his best interest to and frankly, he can do it without thinking about it or having any intention to do so because the world is organized around his whims as a man. We are thousands of years behind in developing our own real and meaningful sense of class consciousness.

The novelist learnt during her research for the programme that her great-grandmother, Lizzie, her great-great-grandmother, Salomé, and her great-great-great-grandmother, Christine, raised their children alone.

Her maternal grandmother, Louisa, is also believed to have been born out of wedlock.

Rowling, whose personal wealth is thought to be half a billion pounds, wrote the first book of the Harry Potter series following her divorce while living on benefits in a cold Edinburgh flat with her baby daughter. The experience left her clinically depressed.

“What I’m very struck by is how many single mothers I’m descended from in this line of the family,” she said in an interview for the programme. “Twenty years ago, I was teaching and writing in my spare time and was very skint. And not long after that, I became a single mum, so I feel the connection.”
