this is honestly pretty minor in the course of the chapter as a whole but i LOVED how we were able to see the development of both Shima and Mitsumi's friendships with people that they were initially antagonistic towards? Like Kanechika teasing Shima after he hugs Mitsumi is cute not just cuz Shima needs friends but also cuz it shows that Kanechika understands 1) Shima's people-pleasing emotional distancing shtick, 2) his crush on Mitsumi, AND 3) feels comfortable enough to tease him abt it!! i know that the entire arc of the play has been abt them growing closer, but it's serious adorable to see

And Ujiie and Mitsumi getting close enough that his blunt phrasing is taken as the "pep talk" it kinda is, and he interprets her sincerely when she calls him a good friend??? babies, they've come so far :')))

Screaming crying throwing up about the symbolism of sparks and fire in Mononoke: Hinezumi (2025). Forgive this base analysis but I just finished the movie and AAAHHHH

cuz the line that stood out to me most was Sakashita saying [paraphrasing] “No fire is ever on accident. There is always a person or a reason”. And like, we’re introduced to the trio (LOVE them btw) that their entire job is to patrol for fire! But their entire job is futile cuz there was never any fire for which patrolling would have made a difference!! And it kinda plays into like the cycle of Otomo’s policies being made responsively to perpetuate his own power rather than the “common good” of the Ōoku

and also the way Otomo’s refrain alllll throughout the movie was “the sparks must be extinguished before they spread uncontrollably” but like, the spark that was extinguished *was* the one that spread uncontrollably!!

I had a lot of fun with this movie even though it’s symbolism is undeniably more surface level. But I guess I give Mononoke can kinda do no wrong, in my eyes :P

Can I say? Even in the most ideal of circumstances I wouldn’t want a homestuck tv show. I have wholeheartedly loved every bit of animation within the comic, and I know we all used to joke about the homestuck anime, and this fandom has made some absolutely beautiful pieces of art. But I wouldn’t want even the most perfect animation.

I think that an adaptation (ideally) has to offer something by the change in medium, has to have some level of meaning to the decision to adapt it. And I think that homestuck is *so much* a product of its medium! The webcomic format that is mostly text based chat logs, the text based rpg styling, the occasional interactivity but maintenance of you as the reader. Im sure that a tv can adapt parts of that but it loses some of the essential charm of homestuck which has always been its characters, just interacting

We have been through many wars before, but this war was not like the ones before it. Our lives were turned upside down. We became displaced from one place to another. We are the Anas family, residents of northern Gaza, specifically in the Shujaiya area. In the first week of the war, we fled our home because everyone considered our home to be in a dangerous area. We moved to the Rimal area, specifically in the middle of Gaza. There, we received the news that our home, which contained all our beautiful memories, was bombed. Suddenly, it was gone!!! Just thinking that your home, which you worked hard on and built from scratch and took a lot of your life, was gone in less than a second ! After a while, we left the sands to the Al-Zawaida area because of the heavy shelling. We stayed there for about two weeks, and then the terrorist army asked us to go to Rafah. We actually fled for the fourth time to Rafah and stayed there for two months, some of the most difficult days of our lives, as there was no way or means to live a normal life. 😔😔

In my Skip and Loafer re read I’ve been struck by how much Mitsumi is a product of her environment? Like I mean obvs, with Chieri’s eternal read of “You must have been raised in an environment with a lot of love” [paraphrasing] but like, it’s also in Chapter 20 right? How Mitsumi falls down a lot but is able to *pick herself back up*. When Shima doesn’t want her to get hurt we realize he’s kinda projecting his feelings about his younger self onto her, cuz he was raised in a tumultuous environment and is only now starting to learn how to want and grow.

and it’s like, so often characters (esp protagonists) are great at dealing with situations cuz of their complex and tragic backstories. And there is a point to that! It is in many ways a skill to be accustomed to dealing with the disasters of life. But also like, I enjoy that Mitsumi is a shining example of how it is kinda a superpower to have a strong and stable foundation, and how that makes her a greater presence in everyone else’s life for it. It’s not that Mitsumi doesn’t have problems, but when she does she has the ability to learn and grow without it destroying her self image. Which I think it an amazing superpower in it of itself

anyway you should always remember that all those foreigners you see dying on the news are just as real people as you are who have just as much interiority as you do. there is nothing about you that makes you more important and it is by pure chance that you are not in their position. in fact, this holds for all of history. every person, no matter the horror of the fate that befell them, had just as much interiority as you do. i feel like some people haven't fully internalized this.

I’m gonna write down what I liked about The Apothecary Diaries before i excise this thing from my brain completely. Very mild book spoilers I guess? I’ll put it under the cut anyway, just in case

Ultimately the thing I liked most was how I perceived Maomao, as a very low empathy female heroine. I guess I don’t read a ton of books in this type of genre, but I feel like a true low empathy female character, much less a sympathetic heroine, is super rare and I enjoyed experiencing the world from her eyes.

I honestly really loved that there was a really really (really) select few individuals who she would genuinely feel angry or sad on behalf of! When almost anyone else was going thru it she didn’t feel much but like, when her dad was suffering she would get furious on his behalf!! I thought it was really special relationship and showed how much she cared about him, and by extension how little she truly felt for most others. Tbh the only people she really seems to show empathy for are her dad (Loumen, the person she considers her father and who considers her his daughter), and those two palace maid girls? Shisui (my fave!!) and the other one. And maaaaaaybe that girl in season 1 that faked her own death? Even then not really, I think she saw them as kindred spirits more than anything. The fact that even after like ~12 books that list can be counted on one hand means a lot, and makes Maomao an interesting POV character.

Disclaimer that I read the official translations before anyone comes at me for not interpreting based on the Aurikat (sp?) translations. But like, I saw some people in the fan discord talking about she was lying to herself or denying her feelings at times but it super didn’t come off to me like that? Maomao seemed like a very straightforward, borderline aromantic, low empathy, neurodivergent woman. She doesnt feel feelings very strongly, which is a consistent piece of characterization.

Jinshi is fine, tbh. He’s alright as a male lead and the only reason I’ve got 1 eye on the anime is cuz I want to see the lil Moon spirit dance. But like. To be sooooo honest I kinda lost a bit of interest in him once I realized he wasn’t actually a eunuch (so like, book 1 lolol). Thought he was gonna have do some palace intrigue but learned (after truly too many books) he tended to be more the one affected by politics than the one instigating them. It’s a shame, I really wanted to explore gender of a beautiful eunuch attracted to women, but alas, another day.

Last point is that i know I lowkey shit talked Lakan up there but he surprisingly one of the funniest most endearing characters in the entire novel? I didn’t expect to like a deadbeat dad but fuck me, I’m still hopelessly endeared by a wife guy. And the kinda gentle mediation on longing, grief, and rememberance occurring the background of Lakan’s story is one of the things I think I’ll remember most about this series. Lakan, Loulan’s whole deal, and little low empathy Maomao
