when she pulls back, he does the same – content to bask in her warmth and love and certainty. only, his eyebrows pinch when he realizes she looks worried. threads of concern pool against the pit of his stomach, until she speaks, and everything locks up. his brows shoot up, eyes widening. odysseus pulls his hands in front of their bodies, one brushing against her stomach as if he might understand the will of the gods themselves.

“really? truly?” he asks, voice a low buzzing whisper. he imagines her stomach swelling further, spending their days content and close. he imagines holding his son or daughter, singing them quiet nothings. eyes search hers. there's nothing but joy written on his face. “you’re sure?”

Penelope shakes her head. "Because now you're soaked through," she says. She brushes his hair back from his temple again, laughing.

She pulls him in for another kiss. He matches her madness, and there's nothing but joy in her gaze for it. What a wonderful life they've had. What a beautiful time.

She holds his face in her hands and presses a kiss to his lips. She looks at him, a little anxious but more than anything excited.

"I'm with child," she says. She searches his gaze for a reaction. "You're going to be a father."

no, odysseus doesn’t expect it – but he’s thrilled nonetheless. in the moment, the man pushes himself up and practically flips them, catching one of her hands in his and eyes wide, teeth on full display as he beams at his wife. “really?” he asks, startled, bewildered, but equal parts excitement. he listens to her fondly, softening as she tells him her own vision, dying the wool and bringing his memories here – together. 

emotional tears spring forth in his vision, and he has to blink them rapidly to ease the sting. “I’d love nothing more.” he responds, shoulders sinking to relax a little more. when was the last time he’d felt this at ease, he wonders, but doesn’t linger on the thought as penelope speaks once more. odysseus smiles. “that does sound like you,” he teases, “but what can I say? I’d probably have done the same.”

Penelope beams at him at his enthusiasm. It's what she'd longed to see, reflected in his gaze when recounting his journey. She watches his hands gesturing in front of them, as though he was pointing to the image of the memory itself.

"You'll have to help me see them, then," she says. "I'd like that. We can dye the wool and bring the sights here to our halls." She likes the idea of weaving with Odysseus, listening to him tell stories of his travels while she brings them from his mind with her loom.

Penelope nods, brows going up when his do.

"The naiads travel where they like," she says. "They bring stories with them, sometimes gifts to trade. Back in Sparta, my uncle got cross with me because I was always trading pieces of jewelry for things from the nymphs."
