Late night posting… Yes, deleting this later too~
For a very long time, I wondered if Ray suffered from c-PTSD, and then have very recently started writing my thesis on it… And while writing it, I started to wonder if Ray also has co-morbid BPD, so I’m starting to write way more than I initially intended to… 1000+ words and I’m probably only a quarter done hiahiahia |ω・)
Also, you can have this! Very rough stage, I’m still learning how to fully shade the planes of the face, so things here are due to change… TT The hair is laughable (・᷄ὢ・᷅)
Tumblr media
I’m not fully sure, but I don’t think I can fully complete this before the week ends (I was rostered for work almost all CLH week… and then I’m rostered tomorrow too)… But, I will try! A whole bunch!! 💪(・ω・´)
I was almost finished with this, but I just wasn’t satisfied—everything was looking wrong… So I had to trash a lot of things, but with the things I am learning in this new attempt I’ve become satisfied and can keep going.
I hope you can look forward to these! d( ・ω´・+)

If I really think about it, I feel like the way Rayman is presented as a celebrity and so on leans more towards Asian idol culture than Western celebrity culture…
Western celebrities have way more control over their image and are allowed to express their opinions. Maybe with some help from PR, but that’s just how I understand it so far. Meanwhile, Asian idol culture tends to lean far and beyond towards parasocialism. Their fans are intense and are made to think they are close friends or even have a chance to date their faves. As such, the way they’re presented is heavily curated (any socials are usually controlled by the company) and the idol is trained heavily, a lot of the time it’s so they know how to provide fan-service. This parasocialism is heavily encouraged.
I feel like when celebrities/idols are mentioned, the usual thought is of those that are curated for teens/adults. But you can also apply this to the Rayman Kidz show too, since he’s presented as some sort of Big Brother figure.
Ah, I remember reading this page that said stalking in Western societies is usually an individual thing, but in Asian societies it tends to be a communal thing…
There’s also stuff like marketing, culture differences, etc… There’s definitely way more to this that I’ll go into in The Google Doc™, maybe even dedicate a whole section to it, but that’s basically my thoughts. 🤔

Sometimes, I think of making a sticker pack set(s*) of the Captain Laserhawk characters. It’ll be optimised for WeChat, since that’s the social I use, but you could probably use it for LINE and Discord — though there may be some complications… 😢
I’m not sure how much of an interest will be placed on it, but oh well, I’ll still probably draw it anyways since it’s something I wanna use haha (ʃƪ¬‿¬) But still, any thoughts or even suggestions are appreciated !
* I’m thinking of making 2 packs, one for the main CLH characters and one for the ‘kids show style’ Rayman. Since Ray is being spoiled to death already with his own sticker pack, he won’t be included in the main CLH pack. Spoiled brat. (≖͞_≖̥)🗞️💥

【PREFACE: I was thinking about genderbent Ray while writing this.】
There was this correlation between Ray and Belle (sushi cow) that I wasn’t able to fully articulate properly, but now I can!
At first, looking into it with an Asian point of view, I thought, “Well, they’re pretty standard for big siblings (honorific; it’s a direct translation but can mean anyone), right?”. Belle really elicits that big sister vibe and Ray, though supposedly meant to be big sister, undoubtedly gives a big brother type of feeling. My heart was happy for a moment, but there was still a lingering feeling of uncontent…
It wasn’t until I was searching up Asian stereotypes in America (for my thesis on why I think Ray is Asian) that I was able to fully realise what I had been searching for! Ray was percieved as the Lotus Blossom stereotype and Belle feels like a mere parody off of the Dragon Lady stereotype. Funnily, those stereotypes were popular in the 1900s to Early 2000s, whilst Captain Laserhawk is set in 1992.
For those unaware, a Lotus Blossom is an obedient, cutesy, docile, eager-to-please Asian, who was saved by a white saviour, and thus is willing to do anything for them but is overall disposable. In some cases, they are willing to kill themselves for the sake of America. To quote a movie which has the Lotus Blossom stereotype, “I can get 10 of you in 2 minutes!”.
In this case, you can replace America with Eden. So when Ray breaks the perception of the Lotus Blossom stereotype and stops being docile, what happens? Disposal and replacement. Because they “can find another one anyways”.
Meanwhile, the Dragon Lady is a promiscuous, mysterious, exotic Asian who has agency over her sexuality. Sometimes portrayed as angry and aggressive and thus is killed for a “happy ending”. There really isn’t much to say because she appeared for 7 seconds with one pose and no dialogue, but I guess that just adds to the mysterious feeling ahaha (ヽ´ω`)
My heart is full. ☺️

In my heart, I felt as if Rayman is the type of Asian who has trouble with the phrases “I love you” and “I’m sorry”. 🤔
For context, saying “I love you” in Asia is something seen as very weird and uncomfortable (at least in SEA and EA? This goes for everything else I’ll talk about here). Rather, it’s much more preferred to say something like “Have you eaten today?”, “I miss you.” and “Please rest well.”… things like that. But in general, it’s just commonplace to show your love through your actions instead of words.
I feel like Rayman is the type of person to be exactly like this. I can see him saying all that stuff and doing acts of service as a way to express love/respect, a lot of anything besides “I love you.” (ヽ´ω`) I mean, it’s cute imagining him stumbling over trying to say it aha.
Well, he’s a popular figure who is admired by many, so he’s also heard it many times before. But the “he” that receives that type of affection is one behind a facade, so I guess in that context it can also come off as superficial.
As for saying “I’m sorry”, this phrase is very different in Asia as opposed to the West. Asia lives off of a very hierarchical society. This is something that’s very veryyyyy slowly dying out, especially in younger generations, but basically it’s unthinkable to imagine someone “higher in rank” saying sorry to someone lower. Rather, if someone in a higher rank yells at you, you surely upset them, right?! So it should be your job to fall to your knees and apologise… that’s basically how it goes. If someone higher in rank pisses you off, you’re supposed to just brush it off and pretend like nothing happened. You’re basically just asking for a death sentence if you ask them for an apology, no matter how kind you word it.
In the West, saying sorry is usually something more akin to mild to moderate empathy. So, I guess if I were to put it, saying sorry in Asia is like saying “I admit that I’m in the wrong and I’ll accept any form of punishment that happens to me. I deserve nothing but the absolute worst.”.
Funnily, this is actually something that happens in Captain Laserhawk. Rayman disrespects two people seen as people being in a higher position than him and faces punishment. Also with the whole grovelling apology to someone higher in rank than him, being forced to push hurtful things under the rug, being seen as the one in the wrong since he’s lower, etc… Even not being able to express being mad over something extreme without facing pushback.
Well, actually, I feel like Rayman partakes in both of these types of sorry. There’s something about him being seen as the lowest for a very long time, and even if he’s seen as an admirable figure, there’s a part of him that knows he’s still lowly. But I mean, I think that even if he didn’t experience that, he would still treat someone “lower” with a lot of respect. Actually, I don’t think he’d see them as lower either way.
In the end, I’d like to publish a Google doc (or maybe just post here haha) someday about why Rayman reads to me as Asian (adjacent). I hope you’re able to look forward to it. ☺️

Hello, I’m Anuyuri! Welcome to my TUMBLR page, I hope you enjoy your time here.
MENU: I make & eat brisket and red onion. Chef’s Favourite singular dish is the little lightbulb ‧⁺( ᵒ̴̶̷̥́ ·̫ ᵒ̴̶̷̣̥̀ )…
I like yuri a Normal amount. _へ__(‾◡◝ )>✰
✄┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
BLURB: As of now, I’m a student who’s working and is constantly trying to sharpen her craft. I regard myself as a very private person online, so I’m not really someone who talks often. Though, I hope I don’t come off as threatening—I don’t bite! Feel free to drop something in my ask box, I most likely will respond.
I really love to draw girls〜♪ Because of this, I usually genderbend Rayman into a girl. If that’s not your cup of tea, you can filter out the word ‘genderbend’.
I’d like to open up my own personal website someday!
જ⁀➴
TOOLS: I use Procreate and an IPad Pro to draw. I use many different brush packs, but these are the ones I most commonly use:
GeorgBrush Comic Ink Brush Set | TDSS Watercolour and Oil Painting Brushes
GvW ELDER 3.0 is the brush that I mainly use to draw.
