In my head, Edwin Payne’s birthday is the 1st of January, 1900. He was born with a new century, but never got to come of age with it.

DBDA BigBang 2025
Half in the Grave by GhostintheLibrary
Charles is tidying up the bookshelves when the door opens again. “Welcome to Tragic Mick’s!” he calls without looking up. “Be right with you.”
“Is Mick in?” a posh voice asks.
Oh, bloody hell, Charles knows that posh voice.
Charles straightens up to see Edwin Payne standing in the doorway, looking around as if Mick might be hiding on one of the shelves. As usual, he looks like he just stepped out of a time capsule in his old-fashioned woolen coat, his slightly askew bow tie, and his perfectly pomaded hair. It shouldn’t work, but Charles supposes you can get away with wearing a bow tie when you look like a model.
“Morning, mate.” Charles makes his way over to the counter, taking his time.
#THIS.!!#this so perfectly matches the vibes of this au#all the details 👀👀#its so beautiful i could stare at it forever#dead boy detectives#dead bang detectives#payneland

who ordered guard dog?
This is a messy painting because i’m trying to get the hang of clip studio paint lol. Hyperfixation so bad it pulled you out of both art block and writer’s block.
Totally didn’t base the idea on these two posts:

and ofc the scene where Charles was covered in blood

It’s really not a big deal when Crystal dies, honestly.
It’s not even because of a case. She’s just out with the rest of the Agency, looking at a butterfly Niko’s pointing at, when she’s hit by a bus, because it turned out she was walking in traffic like an idiot, which feels kinda like karma, to be honest.
The light comes, and the boys and Niko run, and Crystal runs with them, and just like that, she’s a ghost.
Edwin teaches her about ghost powers; Charles teaches her about ghost powers more patiently but less effectively; Niko tests whether they can still touch, like Niko can touch the boys now (they can). And it’s all pretty much fine, frankly, much less whining about her holding them up with mirrors, except that the boys keep hinting about her moving on.
Which is kinda their job, she gets it. Help ghosts move on. Fuck, now that they’re sorta a franchise of Lost and Found, and she’s a 17-year-old ghost, it literally is their job, not that they’re getting paid in anything other than Edwin’s freedom.
But it’s starting to get annoying, and it comes to a head when Edwin (of course it’s Edwin) finally pushes enough for her to snap.
“Because I’m terrified of where I’ll go!”
Silence. Edwin and Niko both settle back on their heels and blink at her, and Charles is doing that doe-eyed thing.
“You know who I used to be,” she says. “And I’ve only been better for like a year. No way I’ve wiped out my past yet. If that’s even a thing you can do at all. And some of the shit I did, it’s pretty definitely Hell-stuff.” She shrugs. “Besides, I’m finally older than you, I’m not leaving now.”
“You’re not,” Charles mutters, and Crystal is about to insist she most definitely is, as the only seventeen year old in the room, when she’s interrupted.
“Crystal,” Edwin says impatiently, “we all saw the light when Death came for you. It was blue. You should know by now that blue light means Heaven. If it were red, we’d be having an entirely different discussion, but unless you’ve committed some nefarious act behind our backs within the last few months, you should be perfectly fine.”
Crystal ponders this for a few moments, then her eyes narrow and shift to Charles. “Hang on,” she says. “What about you, then?”
Charles moves shiftily. “What about me?”
“You keep whining about how you don’t know where you’d go and so you tooootally have no choice but to stay with Edwin, but you would’ve seen your light too! You know perfectly well where you’re going!”
The boys both suddenly start looking at fascinating objects around the room.
“Ah, yes, well,” Edwin starts, as Charles says “that could’ve changed, you see,” and one of them says “we didn’t know yet at the time - “
Crystal thrusts a finger into Charles’s face and he goes cross-eyed looking at it. “You were just looking for excuses to stay with Edwin, weren’t you.”
Niko’s been watching the whole thing like a tennis match, eyes wide and riveted, and dancing, now, as they always are when Charles and Edwin’s ridiculous codependency comes up.
“Well, I mean,” Charles starts at a mumble. “A lot of things. Um. The Agency, you know. And, uh…”
Crystal pulls her finger back to put her hands on her hips. “Well,” she says, “yesterday I tested my ghost powers by stealing a lollipop from a toddler because I thought it would be hilarious. It was. So my destination could totally have changed by now.” She shrugs. “So I guess you’re all stuck with me.”

I think Edwin and Charles would enjoy the beach. They'd find cool shells and trade them with each other. Charles would find a really big one and insist that he wanted to keep it to hear the ocean in it, and Edwin would scoff because "Charles, you ought to know that there's a spell for that in the compendium."
I also think they'd find little sand crabs. Charles would talk to them nicely and draw little patterns in the sand to serve as pathways for them to walk on in funny shapes. Edwin would be fascinated by their willingness to follow the paths and try to study them.
While this happens, Niko and Crystal build a HUGE sandcastle. Charles puts one of the crabs in to be King of the Beach
