This lady was extremely busy this week chewing up the frame of our cabin door, presumably to build her nest somewhere nearby. She came back a bunch of times. My camera here is just a few inches away from her, this isn't zoomed in; she was so intently focused on fetching materials that she didn't care at all about us. Aside from grabbing this video and a still frame, everyone left her to her business and she ignored us entirely. Hopefully her brood goes well!

We need to better educate kids on the importance of animals that are typically hated because otherwise you end up with adults who think hating wasps is a personality.

I’m telling y’all that if you don’t jump around erratically bc a wasp or hornet flies close to you, you’ll have less interaction time with them
If you’re nervous about them (not yknow. allergic. let’s not intentionally misinterpret what I’m saying) ignore them. And I do mean IGNORE. Don’t react.
Also, are you watering or generally handling a source of liquid and they won’t leave you alone? Share some at a distance from yourself. Hell are you eating and they want some? Share it.
Honestly if people treated them with the calmness and affection they show bees they’d have better experiences.
Anyway, have a little plate for the yellowjackets when you picnic. They are eating the bugs that you don’t like so offer them a gift.

The bumblebee meme! Bumblebees do not make honey, lol - their nectar stores are tiny and do not become honey. Honeybees are special. They are one of the few species that make honey, and the only one that makes so much of it!
Also everyone in the notes making points about Asian Giant Hornets (they can kill people and they're invasive!) has never heard of Africanized Honeybees and it really shows. Those are also known as Killer Bees btw. They're an invasive type of honeybee (a cross between European and African subspecies bred to produce more honey and do better in hot climates) that are very aggressive. When they feel threatened, they swarm: hundreds of bees attack at once, chasing their victims for up to a quarter mile away from the hive.
Africanized Honeybees have killed over a thousand people since they were introduced to Brazil, and have spread across the Americas into Florida and Texas. They kill dogs and livestock and wild animals.
Bees aren't any nicer than wasps. They're all animals living their lives and reacting to stimuli.

I've seen the fact about wasps recognizing faces many times, but... Is that human faces, or wasp ones? Or both?
Most of the research I'm finding is just that wasps have a section of their brain for recognizing faces. There are many articles about how they can recognize the faces of other wasps. I'm a bit dubious on whether they can truly tell apart human faces though. They may have the neurological ability to, but can they actually put it into practice on humans whose facial features are so much different than the wasps they usually focus on?
