Khara Khoto in the sands of western Inner Mongolia, China, also known as the "Black City." Founded in 1032, this place was once a trading hub along the Silk Road. But by the late 14th century, it mysteriously fell silent, possibly due to warfare or a diverted water source. Buried under sand for centuries, Khara Khoto was rediscovered in the early 20th century.

Saddest thing ever is reading an academic paper about a threatened or declining species where you can tell the author is really trying to come up with ways the animal could hypothetically be useful to humans in a desperate attempt to get someone to care. Nobody gives a shit about the animals that “don’t affect” us and it seriously breaks my heart

How to lock in & get productive
By Writerthreads on Instagram
I know this isn’t a usual writing post but it is writing-adjacent! I’ve recently fallen into a slump where I just can’t seem to focus after lectures, so I’ve consulted my experience, books & the internet of ways to lock the f*ck back in. Hope this helps me as much as it does for me!
The Rule of Three
Start each day by deciding the three most important things you want to accomplish. Focusing on just three tasks keeps you from feeling overwhelmed and helps direct your energy.
The 2-Minute Rule
If a task takes two minutes or less, do it right away. This prevents small tasks from piling up and clears mental clutter, making room for more significant tasks.
Time Blocking
Allocate specific time blocks to specific tasks or categories of tasks.
Switching between tasks lowers productivity, so group similar tasks (eg. emails or admin work) together to maintain focus. This ties into:
Batch Processing
For tasks like answering emails or organizing files, batch them together and complete them in one go, so you can get into the flow state and finish repetitive tasks faster.
Pomodoro Technique
Work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle four times, then take a longer break. This keeps your mind fresh and maintains focus without burnout. You can also do this with a 50/10 split, which I prefer after starting off with 25/5.
Review Your Day and Reflect
At the end of each day, take a few minutes to review what went well, what didn’t, and how you can improve. Celebrate your wins and reflect on how you can do better tomorrow.
Don’t Multitask
Multitasking distracts you from your main goal and stops you from getting into the flow state.
Organise Your Workspace and Digital Space
A clean and organized environment reduces distractions and boosts focus. Regularly clear your workspace, organize files, and declutter, and then it into a habit.
General Advice
Touch grass daily: nature helps with relaxation and grounds you
Do something social every day: humans are innately social creatures. Talk to your family and friends and stay in contact with them :)
Exercise, eat & sleep well: it might be hard, but try your best to get 150 minutes of exercise weekly, and eat as healthily as you can. And don’t forget to sleep! (Which is hilariously hypocritical coming from a medic)
It’s ok if you have an off day! Sometimes a slow day is just your body telling you that you need a break.
Keep up with your hobbies: life can get busy and prevent you from enjoying what you love. Set aside some time every week to peruse your hobbies. To do this, I plan out all my fun activities then arrange my studying and working around the time for hobbies & rest.
What other productivity tools or hacks work for you? Lmk in the comments, I would love to learn more from you guys!!

Lice combs made of bone are found on many 19th- and pre-19th-century historic sites. These combs were used to remove lice from beards and hair. (Crawford County, Wisconsin)

I'm a little annoyed at this job that I interviewed for because I know all the people I'd be working with, I'm already in the organization and know how everything runs, I'm way more than qualified and I love the variety of work that I'd get to do. But $16/hr? Probably 20 to 25 hrs a week?? Paid monthly. I am trying to make a living here. I got bills to pay. I literally haven't had a project from my private sector job in 2 weeks. There's no way I can survive off that. I so badly wanted the job since its an actual archaeology/Cultural resources job. I'm better off in my non archaeology job in the same organization that pays more, gives me a full 40 hours and happily gives me overtime if I want it but is also super flexible if i can't come in for a month because of my private sector job.

The interview actually went pretty well but I don't think I'm gonna take the job. They don't think they're gonna be able to match my current salary since it's a different classification. It's a $5/hr difference. Which is a $10/hr difference from my private sector job. It's also not gonna be full time. My current set up is doing the private sector job when available and filling up my schedule with the non arch public sector job. The arch public sector job said they'd work with my private sector schedule. Thr problem with that is that sometimes I don't get any hours a week with it so I go and do 40 hours at the non arch public job. I won't be able to do the non arch job if I take the public sector arch job since it's the same organization and they dont allow double dipping like that. It sucks because I really wanted the public sector arch job even though it paid less than the private sector arch job, espec when I thought I'd at least be guaranteed a full schedule and they'd be able to match my current same organization salary. State jobs suck lol
I should've taken the morning off of work. I've got my interview in a few hours and I was offered the morning off. I'm really anxious rn and I feel like I shouldve taken the morning off so I could prepare. I'm interviewing for a diff position in the same company so I'm only a 2 min drive from where the interviews are taking place

I am also regretting my outfit cuz I decided to do a business casual thing with a button up and i am just not enjoying it at all. Shouldve gone for a t shirt and kept it casual since I know the kind of workplace it is and i doubt anyone else is gonna dress up but idk

Job interview next week! A public sector archaeology job. I'm getting bored of my private sector mostly construction monitoring job. I'm hoping the public arch one will be more fulfilling despite the lower pay.
Scared I'm gonna regret the switch.

At the start of one of my many attempts at uni (we're no joke on number seven) I took an anthropology class because it seemed cool. This was at the absolute height of the popularity of Bones so the first lecture was literally standing room only, fire hazard levels of packed.
So the professor comes in and I cannot express enough how much this man was actually round, not tall, greying, balding, and literally wearing a three-piece tweed suit with a little red bow tie. He was the most perfect human being I've ever met.
Anyway the look on his face when he saw an actually packed lecture theatre was one of sheer unbridled glee. Natural, right? His dinky little subject is suddenly unbelievably popular.
Which gave him the perfect opportunity to talk about pissing for a solid hour. Because that was his specialist subject. Comparative urination etiquette.
This man who was the Platonic ideal of a humanities professor stood there and talked enthusiastically about piss to a packed to the rafters lecture theatre full of bright-eyed first years, and as this was a Monday morning it was almost certainly many people's first ever university lecture of their whole life. His eyes were glittering with joy the whole hour. He was having the time of his life.
There were absolutely no questions at the end of the lecture. He, apparently having fully understood what he was doing, clearly expected this and instructed us to have a lovely day and wished us good luck on our higher education journey.
You could sit anywhere you wanted in the lecture theatre the next week and the lecture was intro to methods in anthropology.
I don't think I could ever love a man more than I still love him.
