Ms. Boogie

Rapper. Afro Latina. 30 Years Old.

The beloved Brooklyn Based Rapper known as Ms. Boogie, re-introduced herself to the world as a trans woman after releasing a statement in May of 2018 to Paper Magazine. “In a practical world, I would be a trans woman, but in the world that I have built for myself and my loved ones, I am simply myself.” I was first introduced to the “Dickscipline” artist in a LGBTQ+ party event this summer called Dick Appointment. The 3 Dollar Bill venue in Brooklyn was filled with beautiful energy from the community where Dj’s and artists who took the stage were celebrated. Once Boogie took the stage, the crowd watched intriguingly while I admired her presence and the energy she was giving. From that moment to now, I reference lyrics from her songs ‘Fem Queen’ and ‘Dickscipline’ almost everyday. That day to me felt like discovering a new star that I was eager to listen to and figure out who she was.

It’s refreshing to see representation within the trans community in spaces where society isn’t used to seeing it. The impact this has on the LGBTQ+ community and that it’s making for the future is bigger than music itself. In a deeply transphobic and misogynistic space that is rap music, it is critical to have a movement where Black Trans Women are given a platform where they’re allowed to live freely and be celebrated. Boogies #FemQueenJoy she says is about “revoking the agency to promote our fatalities. It’s about normalizing Black Trans Women being happy” them.us. Everyone has a different way of viewing life and more than ever our society is realizing how much representation really matters. This movement hits close to home for many people out in the world who need to hear a voice that makes them feel empowered, and that’s what the Brooklyn Rapper is doing.

This post stands as a love letter to you Ms. Boogie. Continue to blossom into the artist that you’re becoming. Your journey is an inspiration to many people and an inspiration to me, a non-binary, Afro Dominican from the Bronx. I’m looking forward to hearing your upcoming album and excited to see you perform live again as someone who supports you. Your presence did something for me that night that I first saw you perform and it’s something really special. To live in these times means so much to the people in our communities because we’re seeing how the impact for those who paved the way is starting to pay off. All the best ♡

It has been a part of my life since I can remember and has grown with me throughout the years. Finding myself in a rabbit hole when listening to their music has become one of my favorite things to experience in recent years. There’s a yearn for authentic music from authentic artists who respect the artistry that is music. I present to you these new musical artists, who will shape the future of music.
