Writing Prompt #2590
"He's supposed to be better than you." Her body found itself stuck between a guttural howl and sobbing. "He's supposed to fix all of this! And you're supposed to lose."
The villain couldn't help the smile at the corner of their lips. It was so fun to watch them break.
"Oh, but that's not what happened, my dear. Such a shame, isn't it? Now, let's watch what wasn't supposed to happen together."

His hand trembled as he let go of the knife buried in my side and backed away slowly, shaking. I felt his warmth leave and stared in astonishment at the hilt of the dagger in my side. Tearing my gaze away I looked at him, making eye contact. There is something very wrong, my vision is fading. The world fell from beneath me, he lunged forward to ease me to my needs. “What have you done? I never wanted this.” He said to the sky. “I am truly sorry, my love.”
“What do you mean ‘what have I done?’” I wanted to be angry, but I was in utter shock. The air grew cold around me and a rolling darkness swept through the clearing.
I…I don’t understand. There has to be a reason. He would never… It’s too much effort to keep my eyes open. One last time I made the effort to open my eyes, to drink in all of his features. If this is the last that I’ll see of him I want to remember everything, to find him in the afterlife. “Wha… What did you mean?” I rasped. The dark mist grew thicker, the sound of the forest grew silent. He looked around as if something had gotten his attention. “I have to leave you now. I will pay for what I’ve done. Rest easily knowing I’ll find you on the other side.”
NO!... NO, you will not leave me like this. He gently laid me down in the snow and walked off in the tree line. Damnit what did you mean! What is goin on? It was warm and sticky around my middle. He left the damn blade in my side! I’m not ready to die. This is not how I’m supposed to die. I’m not ready…
“You’re right, young one. It’s not.” There was a warmth on my side for a moment before I felt the blade slide from my abdomen. There was no pain. Like being numb, feeling a pressure but not the pain or pleasure for that matter. I opened my eyes and sat up. My clothes were stained like refined rubies. The snow around me, stained red, sparkled as fresh flakes fell. I checked my wound. There was a deer like symbol with an eight point rack, a star in the center above the stag's horns. where I should have had a scar.
“There is more at play here than meets the eye. Unfortunately, you were just a pawn in a game you had no idea was being played. But that changes now. That mark signifies this… favor I've done for you.” I don’t like the way they said favor.
“Wait, what do you mean ‘favor’? Who are you? And why did you save me?” What this being said brought me out of my shock. This person, no that's not right, being, thing? The warmth it was them. They were in leather hunting gear with a hunting bow slung across their back. They had a certain glow to them. They knelt to get a better look at me. They made a face that says I wasn’t much but there's no other option.
The beings pointed ears flicked, the copper chain that ran between the lobe and clipped to the highest point of cartilage on the ear jingled. The being sighed and adjusted the circlet atop its head. I noticed that they didn’t just seem to glow, they were glowing.
“You will find out soon enough. As for who I am, I am the person who saved you from a most unfortunate fate, for a favor in return.”
“Why? What could you possibly need me to do?” I asked tentatively.
“Didn’t you say that you weren’t ready to die? I thought you wanted to live.” The being sighed again. “I don’t have much time. As much as it pains me to say this, we are in need of your assistance. Take this and follow the path. I will meet you at the gate.”
They handed me a necklace made of silver and held a small vial that gave off a lilac glow, their hunting bow, and a small satchel. Their entire body started to phase in and out. Small bits of them were solid one moment and ghostly the next.
“Who are you?” I stuttered again dumbfounded. “Silvas.” They replied before blinking out of existence entirely.
The cold and the snow blew in full force as the being left. Exhaustion seeped deep into my bones. I looked over the few items they had left behind. So cryptic, and he didn’t leave any arrows for the bow. It’s sturdy at least. The necklaces lilac glow pulsed every so often. I tucked it under my shirt to dull the glow and headed toward the tree line. The same direction Julien went.
You sacrificed everything to get this far, and at the last moment you were betrayed by the one you thought most dear. You lay dying one the snow, praying to any god, demon, or anything that would listen. You receive an answer.
