(THEORY) Ulysses Won't Be The Next Victim

After the first chapter of Project: Eden's Garden, many have speculated that Ulysses Wilhelm, the Ultimate Historian, will be the next victim to be murdered in the killing game.

At first, I was right on board. The signs are all there (He was very prominent in the first trial, he had a Rebuttal Showdown in the first chapter, and his overall character seems to suggest that he won't put up much of a fight), it's only natural to come to this conclusion.

Until, I came to a conclusion of my own.

If my username seems familiar (and you're not following me or a mutual or mine or anything lmao), you might remember the post I made about how obvious the first chapter killer and victim should have been (I remember it anyway, I get like for it every one to five business days lmao).

In the post above, I explained that by analyzing Eva Tsunaka's and Wolfgang Akire's names and animal motifs, their fates were made obvious to the audience.

Shortly after making that post, I researched the names of the surviving cast and their significance in the Bible in an attempt to find another hint. Not counting a few exceptions (Damon's nickname from Cassidy being Damo, an anagram for Adom aka Adam, Diana's name meaning heavenly and Kai's name being vaguely similar to Cain), I came up empty-handed.

Several months later, I'd revisit an old WIP of mine from an entirely different fandom: Percy Jackson. Long story short, when I was like 15, I came up with an idea for a next generation fic, but I couldn't think of a name for a set of twins by Percabeth. I then remembered that Odysseus was Athena's (the mother of Annabeth Chase) favorite hero, and looked for names similar to that for their children.

And I came across the name: Ulysses. Ulysses is Odysseus's name in the Latin variant of The Odyssey.

Suddenly the wheels started turning.

The Bible wasn't the only story with mortal characters interacting with omnipotent beings. In The Odyssey, Odysseus (or Ulysses) is guided by Athena, a virgin goddess of wisdom, strategy, and much more. Similarly to the cast of Project: Eden's Garden, many Greek gods have representative animals.

And Athena's animal is an owl, just like Ulysses Wilhelm.

If we're to assume that Ulysses's name will be an indicator of his fate in Project: Eden's Garden, this can mean one of two things.

He'll either live to the end and survive the peril and hardships of the killing game, much like his namesake...

Or, he'll commit murder in an attempt to survive, similarly to his namesake as well.

Me personally, I'm suspecting now that Ulysses will be a murderer. I could see his inability to smell being the one last piece of evidence to damn him further, which Damon could use against his new rival, Diana, who would definitely argue that "someone like Ulysses couldn't have done it because he was so helpful last time".

Then again, the P:EG team could've predicted that someone would've thought of this and purposefully created Ulysses the way that they did to throw us off. I suppose only time will tell.

Something so underrated about Eva Tsunaka is how incredibly egotistical she is. It flies under the radar most of the game, probably because she’s paired with Damon “my talent is better than your talent” Maitsu for most of it, but I would say she’s actually MORE egotistical than Damon is, it’s just easier for us to see Damon’s ego since he’s the protagonist and we can access his inner monologue.

Yes, Damon is definitely egoistic but there’s some logic behind it. Damon has a philosophy of talents needing to be useful, and it’s only when those talents don’t meet his standard that Damon gets an ego. When it’s people like Wolfgang with ‘useful’ talents, or just of use to him in general, Damon tends to demonstrate a lot of respect. He is capable of seeing others as his equal.

Eva, however? She respects nobody but herself, not even Damon. Absolutely nothing is ever her fault, it’s everyone else’s fault because she can’t accept they matched her intelligence, something her ego is rooted in as the Ultimate Mathlete. She “deserves to live”, as though she was the exception to the rules of the Killing Game and was above punishment. She bluntly calls her fellow students and their ideas stupid. When Damon notices the doorknob in the boiler room has been flipped, but only after the fact, Eva remarks that she “would have noticed in the moment”, and she rubs that in too. She needed to assert herself as more intelligent than her only friend. This particular example is crazy too considering Eva changed the doorknob herself! I sure hope she would have noticed it was switched!

So much of Eva’s self worth is rooted in needing to be better than everyone else, and unlike Damon she’s not willing to accept being equals. She has to be better, or else she’s nothing.

hi this is me analyzing the entirety of working for the knife by mitski in the context of eva tsunaka because I think it’s a very eva song!! (this might be me just sounding insane but I think this is coherent)

I cry at the start of every movie I guess 'cause I wish I was making things too But I'm working for the knife

this to me is kind of showing how eva longs for a bigger place in the world, as being a mathlete is a title that she hates because she feels like it dumbs her down to someone who only does competitions. her “wishing she was making things too” to me is her being kind of jealous of the other ultimates? Like Wolfgang is a lawyer, he’s protecting people everyday and being a mathlete i associate with just going to competitions, eva wants to be something more important.I used to think I would tell stories But nobody cared for the stories I had about No good guys

again this is very eva’s relationship with her ultimate. she wants to do other things in her field of interest, like science or TTRPGS but the UTP doesn’t care she took a three day train ride to present on why her ultimate should be different, they’ll just see her as an mathlete forever. nobody cares about her stories. also I thought “no good guys” was “lonely guys” but actually that works better!! It’s talking about Eva’s distrust of everyone, even people who are trying to connect with her (see: diana, damon, cassidy) and the nobody caring about no good guys I think could also talk about her agreeing with damon and her speech about that. Eva’s telling stories about how other ultimates can’t be trusted because they’re ultimates, and how none of the are automatically “good”, they’ll all kill eventually and you can’t trust in someone outwardly being nice (a good guy) to not kill, because people who you would never think would will snap under the pressure of the killing game, and nobody caring is the class isolating damon and eva for saying it and still believing in the hope that no murders will happen.

the first part of this “I always knew the world moves on, I just didn’t know it would go without me” is like how eva was the first one to believe that someone would kill eventually (Damon then agrees with her) but in my mind Eva kind of assumed she was impenetrable? she is truly so confident in her murder plan (honest I would be too girl though that was incredibly impressive) that she doesn’t worry at all about getting caught until damon gets closer and closer to solving it. i start the day high and end so low is eva again, beginning of the trial calm and collected and at the end full hysterics.

sadly Eva will not be reaching any of these ages… but I think this is like how again Eva doesn’t want to do math her whole life, but as she realizes it’s the only part of her that people value she feels like she has to keep going with this. “though maybe at 30 I’ll see a way to change” is her realizing that oh. damon and diana did care about you no matter what your talent was literally mid trial. in my eva analyzing mind the lyrics just seem like oh at 30 I realize it but it’s too late to stop that I’m living for the knife. just like the realization that everything could have been different at the worst time

THESE are the lyrics I made this post for!! here the choice is “working for the knife” aka taking tozu’s deal. she thought if she were to kill, it would be out of her own decision, and it was out of her own decision. She was right, but her choosing to take the tozu’s perk without thinking is her choosing wrong (and the general murder is choosing wrong don’t kill people) she’s trying to talk to the group about how she was forced into murder by tozu, and she’s right, he was incredibly sneaky in the way he didn’t tell her what she had to do after she got it and making a trap only she could solve. but, in the end she was right, it was her choice, but she chose wrong. she starts the day lying (murdering wolfgang, lying about her talent) and ends with the truth (being exposed for both) and her execution is her dying for the knife. she executed a fantastic murder and despite her pleas, Tozu still kills her.

I have so many other thoughts about mitski for this game but this took so long that I’m trying to decide if I should or should not do it again… if anyone else makes song analysis PLEASE tell me. here are some other mitski songs I might do next for characters for you to listen to and just for personally reference if I do this again

I lowkey hope Jean takes on more of a leadership role as the game goes on and gets everyone to rely on him in some way (bc his talent is being a captain n stuff), just for a killer to use this to their advantage and kill him to disorient the group, throwing off everyone’s lofty synchronization. But then Damon comes in clutch because he was the only one to not fall far Jean’s bullshit (Damon thought it was all bs) and gets everyone to snap out of feeling “lost” with Jean gone. But Damon still misses him too, on the inside. But he won’t show it to anyone because he won’t get close to anyone . not ever . he won’t trsut anyone.e totally

SORRY THE EXTRA FUN DETAILS FOR THE GHOSTS ARE MAKING ME GIGGLE ESPECIALLY IT AFFECTING DAMON WAY MORE. imagine mid trial Damon’s about to do pull out a full grave accusation and then he gets ZAPPED as Wolfgang tries to put a hand on his shoulder. everyone turns to Tozu like “isn’t it against the rules to hurt students if they’re following the bylaws??” and tozu’s just like “idk wasn’t me” (Cassidy dubbed this incident Damon “pulling a Wolfgang”, which wolfgang’s ghost did not appreciate.)

if they did figure out Damon was being haunted by ghosts, who do you think would come to that conclusion first? it’d have to be someone observant, close to him and willing to believe in magic… diana? kai?

also YES to possession hardcore. I might redraw some wolfgang/eva sprites as damon to kind of see what their possession could look like… wolfgang possesses him for a full minute and immediately after damon just FULLY collapses. wolfgang Akire so full of righteous justice towards killer he possesses damon and it literally nearly kills him. I am feeling very compelled to write this fanfic.
