Hi genice! I'm so sorry if you've answered this before, but can I get some art help with human anatomy, like male and female? I have such a hard time trying to even the most basic figures laying down or moving. I have a hard time trying to figure out how to sketch the anatomy first and then the body and details :///
(these asks are similar so i’m answering them together!! hope that’s ok)
tbh i still have a long way to go with learning anatomy hahamost of the time i kind of just “feel out” the poses and proportions so the way i draw probably isn’t the most accurate lol..
i’ve posted something about poses here and making them dynamic hereand for anatomy posts there’s this, this, this, this, and this
(these are probably too specific to answer your questions tho lol)((+they’re kind of old..))
in general i kind of visualize the human body like this:
(basically i try to break things down into simpler shapes! i focus a lot on visualizing things as 3D forms because it helps me to draw them at different angles better and faster)
and then i sketch poses like this:
when i sketch poses i prefer to focus more on its gesture and movement, and then refine the proportions and anatomical details at a later point (using reference to help me whenever i get stuck on something)
this is just how i visualize and sketch stuff though! different things work for different people so i highly suggest just trying different processes and techniques etc until you figure out what works for you. i think having an understanding of anatomy is important no matter what style or process you use though so it’s good imo to take the time to get some basics down
there are various body types for both male/female anatomy so there are tons of different ways to approach drawing them
eg:
but to keep things simple in this post i’ll generalize things like this:
but as always i think the best way to learn is with practice!drawing from photos help, drawing from life helps, gesture drawings help, learning about the shape/structure/function of muscles and bones help, etc
google is your friend and medical illustrations (while often harder to interpret) are usually more accurate and reliable than art tutorials when it comes to learning anatomy so i think it’s helpful to look at those in combination with the tutorials done by artists

THANK YOU!! <3 I’m always very bad in explaining what I’m doing. Cause there is just a lot of trying and painting over it and mashing and mixing colors until I feel it’s good. So I tried to show you. I hope this helps!

Okay, HTTYD fandom I’m coming for you.
I want an au where the gang were always friends. Like, they grew up to be just as tight-nit as they are in RTTE, but because of reasons they hide the fact that they’re friends with Hiccup from the adults. Why do I think this could work?
Well:
Hiccup by nature is very forgiving, so when all his friends come to him and say they can’t be friends in public because of one reason or another, he sympathizes, as long as they’re still friends, he doesn’t really care.
Snotlout is the first in the group to start drifting away, and they all ask him why
Spitelout doesn’t like that his son is hanging around Hiccup when he’s so unviking-like
He pressures Snotlout to cut ties with his cousin and to start putting him down for not living up to “what he should”
This backfires
Baby-lout hasn’t yet had the time to really internalize his father’s teachings, so when his friends ask, he tearfully tells them
Most of the group is furious, but Hiccup understands
If it had just been up to him the group probably would’ve disbanded then and there
Lucky for him it wasn’t
They figure that if Spitelout doesn’t want them to friends then they won’t… in public
In private is a different story
In public they treat it like a game, to taunt each other and be as sarcastic as possible
But when they’re alone they let their guard down
The next one to go, surprisingly, is Astrid
After her uncle died her family’s reputation takes a dive
At first, the fact that she’s friends with the chief’s son is a good thing, but as time goes on and he doesn’t grow, her parents start getting pressure, and Astrid, not being as young anymore, feels it, too
Astrid’s extremely conflicted, because on the one hand she doesn’t want to abandon Hiccup, let alone insult him in front of the village like Snotlout
But on the other, she needs to restore her family’s honor
So they come up with Astrid’s cover: in public she’ll distance herself from all of them, working hard to be a shield-maiden, only being a part of the group in an orbit-sort of way
She grows into ignoring Hiccup in public because if she doesn’t she’s going to take the head off the next person who insults him
For Fishlegs and the Twins, there’s no specific moment that they start to distance themselves in public
Overtime, the twins become more destructive and so does Hiccup, so being seen together is a no-go
Fishlegs is growing evermore into the scholar and is completely uninterested in fighting, to the point where, if it wasn’t for his stature, he’d be in the same boat as Hiccup (if less magnified, because he’s not the Chief’s son)
So they all “grow apart” into the roles we see in the first movie, with some noticeable differences
They sit together in the great hall, but to anyone casually observing Hiccup’s excluded from the conversation
In actuality, Hiccup and Fishlegs came up with their own little version of sign language which Astrid forced everyone to learn, though some are more fluent than others (Tuffnut is surprising good at it, but Snotlout’s lucky to understand a full sentence)
Astrid still trains extra in the forest, but usually you can find the rest of the group somewhere nearby doing their own thing, if they’re not needed elsewhere
Similarly, because they hang out around her while she trains, she manages to bully at least Hiccup and Fishlegs into being at least passable with one weapon (sword and hammer)
Snotlout still flirts with Astrid, but it’s far more joking and well timed than in canon (of course he still has a crush on her, she’s Astrid, but he also flirts with her to escape that weird fluttery feeling he gets when Fishlegs gets excited about the book he’s reading)
The twins outward behavior doesn’t change as much as their friends’ perception of them
The group is very aware that the twins are far smarter and more capable than they let on, and are aware that a lot of their chaos is carefully planned and not just violent stupidity like the rest of the village might assume
The gang even joins in a lot, the twins made them far more mischievous than they let anyone know
Due to the closeness to Astrid, Ruffnut is far more willing to be serious about training and other things, even if she still tries to downplay it
In reverse, Astrid is far more willing to chill the fuck out and have some fun, let her creativity take the lead, even if she’s very strict about keeping a mask in public
This is getting really long and repetitive so I’m just going to leave a few more thoughts
Fishlegs is far more confident and courageous because of his friends, but he’s still skittish in public
Hiccup is far less he’ll-bent on proving himself, but he’s still a sarcastic insane inventor so the results are pretty much the same he’s just happier (less lonely and lacking self-esteem)
Snotlout and Astrid are more comfortable with their emotions
Snotlout has less self-image problems (still-there though, fuck Spitelout)
When Hiccup says he shot down a Night Fury, they can tell he’s telling the truth, but they don’t have time to search with him that day, so he still meets Toothless the same
They plan to work together come dragon training, but Toothless kinda throws a wrench in that plan
Hiccup tries to keep him secret, but they know him, so when the Zippleback thing happens, he stands no chance
I have a lot more ideas but this so long
Just. Let them be friends damn it

Hey! I've seen your art around and just scrolled through a ton of your art and as an artist myself I must ask. How do you do those scales you did on your mermaids, they're absolutely gorgeous and I always struggle with making scales look right, especially when painting/not lining every single scale. If you already have a tutorial, sorry, I didn't see it, but man I love your work!!
Fish Scale Tutorial
In order to draw a material, it really helps to understand it. First, a little science.
Fish scales are not matte surfaces, neither are they smooth and reflective. Fish scales are actually covered in ridges and detail that bounce and polarize the light within each scale, which gives it a shimmery effect.
Fish SEEM super smooth because a healthy fish is coated in mucus that protects their scales and keeps them hydrated. Add that slime to give fish their shine. It goes over the scales like thin covering of glass and has its own smooth, reflective surface.
This is probably wrong but for me as an artist, it works. Light interacts differently with the scale texture vs the slime layer. That's why I start to think of fish scales as cut gemstones, because there are multiple surfaces reflecting the light at different levels.
You do NOT need to draw out the ridges. I only did that to show the science. Now that you understand HOW a scale is shiny, you can just draw the end effect.
I use Sai, primarily, but spent the morning recreating my brush in photoshop so I could give it out.
Get your tail, put in shadow and vague color/markings, and play with a brush that is more opaque on one edge than the other.
My mermaids have HUGE scales, because I like how it looks. I get a new layer, set it to Luminosity/Add, and just sweep in the scales, one at a time.
Put in the rest, smaller scales near the tip. Don't draw every scale, just the ones that catch the light. Some of my mermaids only have scales on 10% of their tail, with un-detailed shadows.
Next, add yet another luminosity/add layer, and do a big swoosh along the top for catch light, and a bit on the bottom for reflected light. This is the light reflecting on the slime layer.
Add a few more layers of shine, pop out the edges a few scales, and there you go.
This entire process took me one minute and thirty seconds.
You'll be slower at first when you're figuring out how to arrange your scales, but you'll get faster the more mermaids you make.

Hello, just want to say I love your art, do you have any suggestions on how to draw poses?
I guess three things I think of when it comes to poses are line of action, straight vs curved, and weight. I’ll use this quick awkward doodle to demonstrate:
You probably know this one if you know animation. Everything in the drawing doesn’t necessarily have to stick to it, but its a good basis for the overall silhouette. Most examples I’ve seen stick to one line, but sometimes I experiment with two if I’m going for a more action-y, dynamic pose. Its best not to go over two (two is risking it) as that would just get too visually confusing.
This one is more for smaller details, such as the arms and legs. Its good if you want to go for a more stylized look, since real life humans never have completely straight lines anywhere on their body. It’s basically contrasting a straight line with a curved one so you get a clearer idea of where the volume is going. Check out this video if you want more info, which is where I referenced from!
An easy one to forget in my experience. A little trick we learnt in life drawing class is that in real life the nose should generally be parallel to where the most weight is, to make it look more balanced. You’ll notice too that the body gets more compressed where the most weight is, ie the left leg here.
Some of my own (colour coded) examples, although I’m still learning to apply these things ~
(Sometimes if the nose doesn’t line up with where the body is leaning, you have to balance it out with the limbs or other body parts. The amethyst one would not work if she wasn’t holding another character on her back)
I recommend looking up these techniques online or in art books as you’re bound to find more in-depth tutorials and examples. But overall I hope this helps!
