while protestors are out on the streets asking justice for breonna taylor's murder, louisville law enforcement has senselessly murdered another black man, david mcatee. he was the owner of a bbq restaurant and he was literally at the protests feeding people when he was killed after law enforcement blindly shot into a crowd!! his family says he was shot while trying to protect his niece!! he was known to feed police officers for free!! he was a good, kind man! say his name!!

so i’m sure by now most of you have seen the news story about the patriots using their team plane to fly ppe into massachusetts from china (or at least if you’re local to new england you probably have).

it’s being shared on the news as a heartwarming story of a football team stepping up for their local area, but it’s also absolutely a sign of how truly and deeply fucked the federal response to this has been.

some background: massachusetts has received somewhere in the neighborhood of 17% of the ppe requested from the federal stockpile, and not one single ventilator. we requested 1000 of those and have now had to up our request to 1400. we have repeatedly been outbid by the federal government and now, most recently, had shipments of ppe that we ordered straight up seized by the feds in new york.

so, in desperation, our governor set up A SECRET DIPLOMATIC BACKCHANNEL to essentially beg china to send us badly needed equipment and make sure the federal government couldn’t seize it this time

florida has received multiple shipments of supplies in this same time frame, on time and unmolested by federal authorities. the difference? governor ron desantis is buddy buddy with trump and florida is a big swing state for the election. states that get on trump’s shit list are having to beg, borrow, and steal so that more people don’t die.

this is deeply, incredibly fucked and i don’t want anyone to ever forget it.

Do you ever just think about how if they reduced the working week, it’d contribute massively to waste reduction?

I mean, cutting out commuting is obvious, but, like, most people with more time on their hands use it for something.

Like, cooking more meals at home, or taking up crafting hobbies like soap-making.

We wouldn’t need as much ready-bought shit.

And even people who physically can’t, say, cook regularly or make their own things would benefit because friends/family members who could wouldn’t be so strapped for time.

I stayed at home while at uni, so I didn’t have to work a lot, and my uni hours weren’t too taxing.

And yeah, if a family member says “hey, can you pop around and help me with this”, it’s much easier to say “yeah, no problem”, if you’re not having to add it to the massive to-do pile in the short time you have outside of work.

And when I make things - like bread, I used to bake a shit-ton of bread - I tend to make way more than I need, so I give it to other people.

Idk, starting on drugs for my ADHD that have made handling things easier has also given me more free time - because it’s not spent struggling to do basics - and one of the biggest changes has just been remembering to keep a reusable coffee cup clean and in my handbag, along with a tote bag for shopping.

5p bag charges did nothing. Being able to think straight was the thing that helped. You know, the thing that overwork prevents?

And, like, imagine if you had a whole extra day? Like if the 4 Day Week campaign succeeded.

I’d be fucking sewing clothes that are actually durable and fit me properly. I’d get into soap-making. I’d look into how to protect the garden from feral cats enough to actually grow some veg in it.

And yeah, that’s probably a lot for one person, but it doesn’t have to be one person. Like I said, I tend to make too much food for just me when I bake. And I imagine soap-making is done in batches. And if I could get a veg patch going, I’d probably have too much for just me to eat.

So, if, like, every other person or every third person decided to have a hobby in making things… Well, I imagine we’d use a lot less packaging and shit, is all I’m saying.

Feeling a little low tonight…

Soooo I made my own version of vegan hot choc as a little comfort treat.

Here’s my recipe so you can drown your sorrows in chocolatey goodness too! 🍫

1 cup almond milk (I use alpro original)

6 squares dark choc

1 cap almond extract (a few drops)

1 tsp maple syrup

Combine in a small saucepan and heat gently until the chocolate has melted and everything smells scrummy 🍫
