“Yeah, that tends to be a bummer,” she laughed along lightly. “I’m glad that Providence has been so welcoming to you. It sort of went crazy after the hurricane, but it’s starting to become its old self again.” Leaving Providence the first time had been hard, and Anna knew that when the time came to leave again, it probably be just as hard. “I mean, unless you can point me towards other singers and musicians, then I’m afraid you’re stuck with me,” she joked. “What’s operation?” Anna asked as she tilted her head slightly. Growing up as a child struggling to learn English caused her to not have many friends during elementary school, so she missed out on classic board games.

“it’s sunny, but the pollution from all of the residents and the never ending drought seem to put a damper on things.” scarlett laughed. she’d loved her time in california. she’d met some amazing people there. however, providence was starting to feel more and more like home with each passing day. “really? i can try for your sake, but i make no guarantees!” scar smiled. “you could call me now, but it wouldn’t exactly be legal. i’ve always been into biology, so i could probably do some of the heavier procedures when i was ten. not that anyone would trust me to, and i don’t blame them! i was almost discouraged when i once lost a game of operation. you should’ve seen the look on my face, i was scarred.”

“That sounds suspicious. It’s not that I don’t trust you, but I don’t trust you since you are a stranger. Are you sure you don’t want it?” Carter asked, arching an eyebrow.

“Okay, well, then hi! My name’s Anna. Now I’m less of a stranger than before,” she smiled at him.·“I’m definitely sure. I don’t think my body could handle this much sugar.”

“No poison in here, I swear,” Anna laughed lightly and shook her head. “Just a harmless red velvet cupcake.”

lucas’ eyebrows raised in surprise. “i would love the other one! um - i mean - as long as you’re not trying to slip poison into my insides? are these safe?” he questioned. “what flavor is it?”

“I’m already treating myself with one, so I’m good. Promise.”

“Are you serious? You’re giving a cupcake away for free?  If you seriously don’t want to treat yourself, I’d gladly help you out of your misery.”

Well, you could talk to me. I’ve got nothing to do today.

“Awesome!” Anna smiled. “I’m Anna.” She shook the girl’s hand and then began leading the way to her car, unlocking it. “Do you wanna just put your stuff in the back?”

            “  sure, why not.  “     her mother always told her to be nice and accept help.   if someone’s going to go out of their way to make your life easier,  you better accept it.       “  i’m mary emme.  mary works fine though.   “    she smiles,  shifting the weight of the box to hold out a petite hand to shake. or the closest thing she could do to shake with the giant box in her arms.

Well, how about talking about it?

When something bad happens I swear I think of so many things to do. I run, I start a project, I clean, I cook, but nothing seems to help. I want a drink.

“Wow, I’ve never been to California. Is it really actually sunny there all the time?” The only places in the U.S. Anna had been to over the past eighteen years of living here were Rhode Island, Chicago, and New York once. “Oh, yes, I consider my time at Brown to be some of the best years of my life,” she admitted honestly. She looked down and blushed slightly at the small praise of her course of study. Anna was never one who could take a compliment well. “It’s nothing, really. But hey, if you sing, then I’d definitely ask you to sing some of y pieces! It’s been hard finding people to do that since graduating.” Anna nodded her head. “That’s so cool. Well, if I ever find myself in a medical emergency in a few years, I’ll now who to call!”

“that’s so cool! i was originally out in california, but i transferred. haven’t attended a class yet. did you like it there?” scar asked, hoping to get a little insider information. it could never hurt. “music, yeah? that’s amazing. i’d love to have musical talent, but all i can do is hum a tune every now and again.” she nodded her head. “it’s pretty great. it will be, anyways. right now it’s just a lot of theory and lectures. one more year and i should be out getting my hands dirty.”

Anna chuckled slightly and offered her the treat. “Absolutely sure. Don’t get me wrong, I love dessert, but I don’t think my body could handle that much sweet.”

Leighton wouldn’t have known the voice she heard was talking to her if she hadn’t felt the tap of her shoulder. She turned to face the girl behind her. “Oh! That’s so lovely. Are you sure you don’t want it?”

Anna smiled and shrugged. “Too much sweet for me, I guess. Besides, now you get a cupcake, too, so I see it as a win-win situation here.”

“Hm?” Jordyn asked, turning around to face the person the voice belonged to. “Uh, yes. I will gladly take that cupcake of your hands! Question, but. Why shouldn’t you have them both? If it were me, I’d have scoffed ‘em both down by now.”

Anna frowned slightly, but conceded. “Alright, if you say so.” She didn’t like the idea of not making one last attempt at helping the girl. “Well, if I can’t help you carry it, do you at least want a ride? My car’s right over there.” She pointed to an old but well-maintained Jeep Grand Cherokee parked across the street.

            mary’s smile thinned out and she sighed.       “  i’m a big girl, thanks.  “     she wanted to be doing things herself now.   even if that meant struggling.     “  it’s not heavy,  just big.  “      she laughed, lifting up the box a little more.

“Uhm, are you sure?” she asked with a slightly raised eyebrow. “It looks pretty heavy and I really wouldn’t mind.”

              “  i don’t know if they love me but i’m very fond of them and we have lots of fun.  “       she never had sunday school,  her daddy’s sermons were enough for her to learn.  that’s what they said, of course,  when mary asked one night over the phone.        “  that’s very kind of you,  but i think i’ve got it.  “      she crouches to put everything in the box, picking it up with a small groan. she had to turn to look at the friendly stranger since the box was so big.      “  thank you, though !  “

Anna’s eyes lit up. “You go to Brown? That’s where I went! Well, not for med school, just for undergrad. Music composition.” She shook her head slightly, brushing away her own studies. “But med school. That’s awesome. Saving lives and all that.”

“i go to brown university. it’s my second year of med school, so i’m pretty much exhausted all the time, but the payoff should be worth it.” scarlett explained, taking a bite of the frosting on top. that mixed with the chocolate chips was delicious. “ah, a true local then? that’s worth something. what’re you studying?”

“Oh, you go to school here? Where?” Anna nodded her head as she took a bite. “Well, I kinda grew up around here. We moved away when the hurricane hit, but I came back for college. And now... I’m just sort of here, I guess. Making friends by giving cupcakes to strangers.”

“mostly just eat, sleep, and go to school.” scarlett laughed. “i’m fairly new around here, so i haven’t made all of the haunts my own yet. what about you?”

“Aww, that’s so cute.” Anna looked at all of the crafts supplies fondly. “Those kids must love you.” Mary Emme’s enthusiasm was contagious and Anna couldn’t help but smile warmly at her. “Do you need help carrying these anywhere? I’m not doing anything right now.”

                “  oh goodness no, this is just for my classroom.  “       mary emme looks down at her art supplies, boxes, & posters.     she had only been teaching for a month but it was hard to get everything she needed right away.  this was the last of it.  after this she’d be set.       “  i think it’s more exciting for me than for them.  “        pastor mchannon  gave her places to go find her books and her crafts.  bless his heart for being so helpful.        “  this one is the best in my opinion.  “     she bends over to dig into the box,  pulling out a book.        “  it’s a bunch of crafts to do.  “       she flips open a page,  turning it around and pointing with a big grin.       “  like here the kids cut out little sheep and write psalms on them to take home.  “       she looks up with wide eyes, sparkling with excitement.        “  isn’t that neat ?  “

Even at twenty-four-years-old, the mere reference of being someone’s friend brought a smile to her face. “Pal sounds promising,” she chuckled. “So, what else do you do besides accept gifts from people you just met?”

“oh, i love red velvet!” scarlett smiled in appreciation, fiddling with the cupcake liner to get it undone. she sat down across the girl at a patio table outside the bakery, nodding her head at the introduction. “it’s nice to meet you, anna. at least if my parents call and ask if i’m accepting gifts from strangers, i wouldn’t have to lie about it. you’re a pal now.”
