Shrek 2: Harold do be racist...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shrek 2 (2004)
Synopsis:
Shrek has rescued Princess Fiona, got married, and now is time to meet the parents. Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey set off to Far, Far Away to meet Fiona's mother and father. But not everyone is happy. Shrek and the King find it hard to get along, and there's tension in the marriage. It's not just the family who are unhappy. Prince Charming returns from a failed attempt at rescuing Fiona, and works alongside his mother, the Fairy Godmother, to try and find a way to get Shrek away from Fiona. -IMBD
Memorable Quotes:
"Better out than in I always say!"
"For a happily ever after, give Fiona a call."
"Get you a prince with a sexy toosh."
“Be sure to use small words, he’s a bit slow this morning :)”
Does it hold up to how I remember?
I first off just want to say that the opening montage is so coy and playful with juxtaposition and plays at Disney, it really shows Dreamwork's at its best. This movie is actually of what I believe to be Dreamwork's best time of movies, one that is clearly made with passion and still lighthearted with a real message that everyone can grab and understand. Again, it's not hard to guess that this movie is a winner, but this is actually my favorite of the four films as it just has the most POW to it, it screams the early 2000's in the best way, from the Hollywood-esque far far away to the over the top wicked Fair Godmother! This movie is also where the lovely Puss in Boots comes in! It was actually quite weird seeing the first movie without Puss as he’s such a perfect addition to the Shrek crew, he plays off them so well, especially Donkey. God everything in this movie is just so good, I can’t even name it all but I just hope everyone has a chance to see this movie because it is definitely one of my top picks! Also Fairy Godmother sold that song so hard, no reason to make it slap that hard and yet she did!

Shrek: Shrek is love, Shrek is-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shrek (2001)
Synopsis:
When a green ogre named Shrek discovers his swamp has been 'swamped' with all sorts of fairytale creatures by the scheming Lord Farquaad, Shrek sets out with a very loud donkey by his side to 'persuade' Farquaad to give Shrek his swamp back. Instead, a deal is made. Farquaad, who wants to become the King, sends Shrek to rescue Princess Fiona, who is awaiting her true love in a tower guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. But once they head back with Fiona, it starts to become apparent that not only does Shrek, an ugly ogre, begin to fall in love with the lovely princess, but Fiona is also hiding a huge secret. -IMBD
Memorable Quotes:
"Ogres are like onions... they have LAYERS!"
"Do you think he's compensating for something?"
"I'll find those stairs, I'll whip their butts! They won't know which way they're going."
Does it hold up to how I remember?
I'm sure we all remember Shrek, at this point the film franchise is a beloved series of the Dreamwork catalogue and Shrek himself is an icon in pop culture. This movie, again is the kind in which I adore, by that I mean it's the kind of movie that is meant to be enjoyed by families of all ages. We all know the humor that Shrek has, it's dirty, over the top, and hilarious! It's one of those movies that looking back on it so much funnier to see and get all the jokes it had embedded in the story, from the cliché-breaking to genre defining tale (also it's like the only movie of the series where Cameron Diaz sounds like she isn't being held there against her will.) I think it's pretty easy to guess that this movie holds up in my books, and I hope it holds up in everyone's mind too. It was so oversaturated in the media in the mid 2010's that even though I haven't watch this movie in like years I still feel like I'd seen it just a couple days ago. But in a good way I suppose as this movie is just jampacked with so much charm, there's the jingle from Duloc, the dance-stand-off with Robin hood, and so much more in this movie that just makes it one of kind. This really is one of Dreamwork's golden children and I can definitely see why they keep coming back to it, even having a rumored Shrek 5 in the works!

The Tale of Despereaux: More like the Tale of Disappointment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Tale of Despereaux (2008)
Synopsis:

An accident leaves the king brokenhearted; the sunshine fades, and the soup disappears Into this world is born Despereaux, a book-loving mouse and friend to Princess Pea. Memorable Quotes:
*don’t even ask!*
Does it hold up to how I remember?
Alrighty let’s kick this one off with a crazy truth-bomb… I fell asleep watching this one 😅. I know I know, it’s like literally my whole main thing to watch these movies and report back to all 3 people who read these but like, oh my god this was a snore fest! This couldn’t even hold my attention for the 15 minute mark it was so pathetically boring. Now it’s pretty obvious it doesn’t hold up to how I remember, but I don’t even know why I was so into this movie as a kid, all I could remember from it now was that Despereaux was born with freakishly big ears. I dunno… severely disappointed

The Iron Giant: He really is super, man!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Iron Giant (1999)
Synopsis:
A giant alien robot crash-lands near the small town of Rockwell, Maine, in 1957. Exploring the area, a local 9-year-old boy, Hogarth, discovers the robot, and soon forms an unlikely friendship with him. When a paranoid government agent, Kent Mansley, becomes determined to destroy the robot, Hogarth and beatnik Dean McCoppin must do what they can to save the misunderstood machine. -Google
Memorable Quotes:
“It's bad to kill. Guns kill. And you don't have to be a gun, you are who you choose to be.”
“Souls…don’t die.”
Does it hold up to how I remember?
Okay this one made me cry, it’s so heartfelt. Hogarth a boy with an albeit hideous name, feels like a real kid. That’s actually what I really liked and I felt made the film, is just how real everything felt! This was obviously due in part to the great Brad Bird being the director of the film (the same man behind Ratatouille, the Incredibles, and The Road to El Dorado) he was basically one of the top togs of the 90’s to 2000’s in the animation world and I can completely understand why. Now it’s no surprise by how I opened this when I say it very clearly holds up to how I remember it. The Iron Giant just hits so many notes and tones in the perfect way, I really don’t even want to spoil it, so I’ll keep this one brief and just say… please watch it, it’s goes so unnoticed but it’s so good, it has the same vibe as Treasure Planet or Atlantis: The Lost Empire, so definitely give it a watch!

James and the Giant Peach: Coraline's unknown predecessor!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
James and the Giant Peach (1996)
Synopsis:
An orphan who lives with his two cruel aunts befriends anthropomorphic bugs who live inside a giant peach, and they embark on a journey to New York City. -IMBD
Memorable Quotes:
"I do not know whether to kill you or kiss you."
"I can't remember what fun is for..."
Does it hold up to how I remember?
I won't lie one bit, this is a weird one both with shotty dialogue and characters but I think that really adds to the charm of the movie! You see, for those of you who don't know, James and the Giant Peach was directed by the same great mind who directed Coraline. Both of these movies use stop motion animation to really sell the original idea of their stories that both carry a gritty sometimes eerie charm to them. The character James especially and watching his transition from a real boy to the animated clay figure was a real feat at the time and is still quite endearing to this day. But, does it hold up to how I remember? Definitely! If there's one thing that Henry Selick can do its makes a memorable movie. Although this doesn't have the same BANG that Coraline did, it's still a very cute found family movie that I think is still good to this day. I especially love Miss Spider becoming Jame's maternal stand-in, she is as sweet as can be while also delivering some killer sassy lady lines.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire: What Pocahontas could've been...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
Synopsis:
An inexperienced young adventurer becomes the key to unraveling an ancient mystery when he joins up with a group of daredevil explorers to find the legendary lost empire of Atlantis. A naïve-but-determined museum cartographer Milo Thatch, dreams of completing the quest begun by his late grandfather, a famous explorer. When a journal surfaces, an eccentric billionaire funds an expedition and the action shifts to high gear. -IMBD
Memorable Quotes:
"No toques nada! I'll be right back."
"Two for flinching!"
"We are peaceful explorers, men of science."
"Then why do you bring weapons?"
Does it hold up to how I remember?
The characters of this movie really make the film what it is, I'm honestly very glad the film didn't rush the opening of the movie and then do a big exposition dump like a lot of later Disney/animated movies tend to do nowadays. We really get to witness the passion Milo has for Atlantis as well as see the other characters change their motivations from money to true friendship and connections. Atlantis: The Lost Empire has a similar plot line as Pocahontas, where colonizers come to a foreign land in hopes of some form of gain, most being financial. But where Pocahontas fails, Atlantis succeeds, and that's all in the chemistry baby! Milo and Kida have a mutual respect for one another and Milo respects the culture so much that he learns the language and only wants the best for their people. Whereas John Smith wanders into meeting Pocahontas and by the grace of a magic tree do they then understand each other and true love saves all yada yada yada. So I think it's pretty clear my adoration for this film but it's really great because thinking back to when I was younger I never really was into the introduction aspect but now I can really appreciate what the movie did make this such an authentic and lived in world. I miss these kinds of 2D animated movies that took advantage of the medium all while making it feel so real. (also I will never mention the crappy straight to DVD sequel it doesn’t exist hush)

Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper: Barbie’s magnum opus !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper (2004)
Synopsis:
Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper' features Barbie in an exciting dual role as a princess and a poor village girl - two girls who look amazingly alike. The girls' paths are fated to cross when Princess Anneliese is captured and Erika, her look-alike, must try to save her. -Google
Memorable Quotes
"Duty means doing the things your heart regrets."
"Lilac, she never scented her stationary with Lilac... it was always rose."
Does it hold up to how I remember?
Yes ma'am Ms. Barbie was putting the work in for this movie, honestly a god-tier movie. Less than five minutes in and I'm getting banger after banger of a song blessing my ears! Preminger was so terribly wicked and over the top, it was so fun to watch. So much of this movie feels so old but not entirely dated which I really appreciate, I think Barbie really excels at having timeless movies (ignoring the animations because some of these models are mad iffy!) Now, I think it's pretty obvious I think highly of this movie it very much does hold up to how I remember. The way the characters jump to conclusions and make assumptions with such a strange plot detailing it is so bizarrely funny I just have to laugh at and with it. It's one of those movies that really shaped me as a kid, it sounds mad corny but those Barbie movies were really some of the best straight to DVD movies I'd ever seen throughout my childhood! Also, this was one of the rare movies that added an animated bloopers reel which honestly adds 1,000 pts!

Doogal: I blame the French
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doogal (2006)
Synopsis:
Florence and her animal friends live in the Enchanted Village, which is under the care of Zebedee, a kindly wizard. However, a dark cloud approaches this sunny world. After being encased in ice for eons, Zeebad, Zebedee's evil double, reappears and threatens to start another ice age. The only way to stop Zeebad is for Florence and friends to find three magic diamonds before he does. -Google
Memorable Quotes:
“Look at that Im great! Ope I’m average…. Im terrible!”
"Oh I slimed my shell.😩"
Does it hold up to how I remember?
Okay so firstly, I didn't even know this was originally a French animated film released a year prior called The Magic Roundabout. So that was pretty wack, but also makes sense because oh boy does the lip-syncing just not make any sense whatsoever! Now getting into character design, this was an uhhh interesting one to say the least, like why does the snail have so many tiny human teeth??? Why does the rabbit, Dylan (voiced by Jimmy Fallon whaaaat) always look 'intoxicated', and whyyyy is the train just existing with giant creepy eyes?? Very weird. Plus they threw out pop culture references every 10 second that gave me such whiplash, every comedic line was either a pop culture reference or a fart joke. But does it hold up to how I remember? Sadly, I gotta say this does not seem as good as I remember. It's actually kinda sad because I remember being in love with this movie as a kid and I would beg my sister to watch it with me but this just felt so obviously like a cash grab by all the celebrities there was in this movie and don't get me wrong, most of them sounded like they gave it their all and really cared but it just didn't feel the same that it used to...

Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktakular: Not Exactly Bone Chilling...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktakular (2003)
Synopsis:
Scary Godmother takes Hannah to her realm on the Fright Side where she is throwing the best Halloween party in all of frightdom. At the party Hannah is introduced to many colourful characters, learns that not all monsters are mean and enlists her new spooky friends in a plan to teach Jimmy a lesson. -IMBD
Does it hold up to how I remember?
This movie is probably what marked the Halloween season for a lot of us, as children watching Cartoon Network and watching it. It's cute and funny but the whole formula with Hannah repeatedly meeting monsters, being scared, and then learning that these monsters are 'human' too got old pretty kid, it is definitely a children's film... Also her cousin Jimmy is such a jerk I wanted to post up with snob anytime he was on screen! But does it hold up to how I remember? I gotta say, sadly it doesn't, which totally sucks because I really expected it to. The movie felt like it was moving at a million times a second trying to shoot things out left and right everything felt so crazily underdeveloped and shotty. Gratefully though, the scary godmother was a delight anytime she was on the screen and especially Skully (That skeleton definitely had some fruit in his baskets). Although this movie screams nostalgia fest and I really wanted my last Halloween-spooky week- post to end with a bang! Unfortunately, it will end with a small fizzle and that might be the scariest thing yet...

But uhhhhh Happy Halloween up next turkey season!✌🏻😌

9: why was 6 afraid of 7 😏
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9 (2009)
Synopsis:
When 9 springs to life, it finds itself in a post-apocalyptic world where humans no longer exist, and the only signs of life are sentient rag dolls like itself and the machines that hunt them. Though it is the youngest of the group, 9 convinces comrades that the only way to survive against the machines is to stop hiding, go on the offensive, and find out why the machines want to destroy them. As 9 and the group learn, civilization hinges on their success or failure. -Google
Memorable Quotes:
“Sometimes fear is the appropriate response.”
“They left us nothing! Why do we need to right their wrongs?”
Does it hold up to how I remember?
This movie was chilling. It had to have been the only ‘spooky’ film thus far to well, actually spook me. Taking place after an apocalyptic tragedy and mankind wiped away, 9 and the others try to make what they can of their situation, these little sewn rag dolls do what they can to survive. The machines were terrifying and oh my god the scenes of them just ripping their souls out tore me up inside, I mean even the ending is so somber with the dolls have just gotten peace but are still dead! I don’t even know if I can say it holds up to how I remember because as a child I tried so hard to avoid this film as it terrified me! I mean in my defense this movie is PG-13 and I was like 8 when I watched it, definitely a regrettable choice for sure… I think it did an excellent job of achieving what it set out to achieve, I kinda wish this wasn’t such a forgotten media as teenagers need animated films geared towards them, too often animation companies default to kids movies or raunchy adult films. This movie is real, and definitely not for the young.

IGOR: IT’S ALIVE!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IGOR (2008)
Synopsis:
In a land of mad scientists and diabolical inventions, what do you do when you're born with a hunch on your back? You become an Igor. A hilarious twist on the classic monster movie, IGOR tells the story of one Igor who's sick of being a lowly lab assistant with a Yes Master's degree and dreams of becoming a scientist. When his cruel master kicks the bucket a week before the annual Evil Science Fair, Igor finally gets his chance. -Vudu
Memorable Quotes:
“Respect? Respect isn’t gonna keep me in baby seal leather boots!”
“Pick me up and seven I’m gonna shave 😏”
Does it hold up to how I remember?
Okay I remember this movie as being my go to ‘sick at home’ movie when I was like 5, it was MY MOVIE!! But right off the bat I’m greeted with this immortal rabbit that is highly suicidal voiced by Steve Buscemi. So let’s just say I was thrown off quite a bitttt but god was it so jarringly funny. I’m not gonna act like this movie was good, it wasn’t but it isnt awful either. It’s funny enough to garner a ‘yeah good enough’ from me and I can still have memories of this movie. So does it hold up to how I remember? Sadly I do feel I have outgrown this one and maybe for the better because why was there so much sex talk in a kids film!?? I was completely bewildered hearing it (it was funny doe)! And Eva, the actress obsessed Frankenstein-esque monster, is such a sweetheart! I remember her fondly and am glad to say she holds up to my memories!

Coraline: Seriously, Be Careful What You Wish For!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coraline (2009)
Synopsis:
While exploring her new home, a girl named Coraline discovers a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own but, in many ways, is better. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother and the rest of her parallel family try to keep her there forever. Coraline must use all her resources and bravery to make it back to her own family and life. -Google
Memorable Quotes:
"No way I'm letting you sew buttons in my eyes!"
"I have no clue where your old parents are... perhaps they got bored of you and ran away to France."
"Say got any magic mud for me? I have a serious case of writers rash on my a-"
Does it hold up to how I remember?
Laika Studios is a studio a lot of us are familiar with but also just don't know it! They've produced movies like Paranorman and the movie I'm reviewing today, Coraline! One thing I loved about this movie is the incredible foreshadowing, I'm sure it's well known by now that I love animated movies that don't dumb down their content just because it is for a presumed 'child audience.' Instead, it's witty, smart, and so much fun!! (for goodness sake she's searching for kids eyeballs) So getting into the film itself and whether or not it holds up... obviously, I still love it and probably always will but let's get into why! One of the first things I caught on this viewing and really stuck with me now that I'm older is just how exhausted Coraline's parents are with her, honestly, it's kind of sad to witness them just be completely annoyed and over her well overall existence (can't blame 'em though, Coraline was lowkey a brat, respectfully!) One character that I found a delight in the movie was the Other Father, man was the light in the Other Mother's dark, wicked world. Being nothing more than a pawn in her sick game, but still having genuine love or at the very least remorse for the Other Mother's latest victim. Needless to say, Coraline is such a sick protagonist!! if I were in her shoes I woulda just killed myself no lie. I mean the Other Mother's transformation to not only the spindly witch but also a giant frickin' spider was just the icing on top of a nightmare Sunday!! I'm very happy this movie is as well known as it is, it deserves all the hype.
