Beastie Boys - Gratitude
youtube
I, like, never listen to the Beastie Boys. But this popped up on me the other day and has been an earworm ever since.
πΆ Good times gone but you feed it
Hate's grown strong, you feel you need it
Just one thing, do you know you?
What you think, that the world owes you?
What's gonna set you free?
Look inside and you'll see
When you've got so much to say it's called gratitude πΆ

Do you like 'zines?
Do you like alternative, diy, indie, punk, underground music and m-culture? (I'd suppose so or you probably wouldn't be here.)
Then you might enjoy UMAmi, the little 'zine that could. We just celebrated our 1st anniversary of keeping the Oklahoma City community connected.
Birthed by the Metropolitan Library System, the Oklahoma Underground Music Archive (UMA) seeks to preserve OKC'S punk past. It expanded its scope and offering by creating a 'zine to share with the community. We offer monthly articles and essays, interviews with artists, reviews of shows and library materials, (free) classifieds/connections, a gig calendar, and more
You can find/read UMAMi online at:

New playlist is up for the month of August! The prompt was "Old School," but last year it was "School Daze" and I already punned a bunch of 'school's songs for that. I didn't want to repeat myself, and I didn't want to limit myself to Classic Alternative [which is, admittedly, the bulk of what I listen to anyway] so my contributions are all about being/feeling/getting old, and the various things that come with that (a touch of Cohen's wisdom/cynicism, debates on going out vs staying in.)
It is a collaborative playlist, so other additions may not stick with my theme!

"I'm, I suppose, TRULY old school. My π is "vintage" & I haven't an adapter; ONLY way I can listen to π΅ is CDs - no streaming! Currently checked these out from the library. I play a game with my son: GUESS WHICH CD IS IN THE PLAYER. He LOVES (HATES) this game. Y'ALL. GUESS WHICH CD IS IN THE PLAYER."
Posted this on my more Twitter-y account; thought I would bore everyone (NO-ONE) with answers*! The CDs: πΏ Alice in Chains: Dirt πΏ Concrete Blonde: The Essential Concrete Blonde πΏ Death: For the Whole World to See πΏ Hole: Live Through This πΏ Living Colour: Vivid πΏ Bob Marley: Easy Skanking in Boston '78 πΏ My Chemical Romance: Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge πΏ New Pornographers: Whiteout Conditions πΏ Nirvana: Bleach πΏ Nirvana: Nevermind (Superdeluxe 30th Anniv Ed.) πΏ Skating Polly: The Big Fit πΏ Skating Polly: Fuzz Steilacoom
Answer #1 (when first asked): Skating Polly: The Big Fit I just started listening to Skating Polly in April, and I adore them! The Big Fit is from 2016; it's eclectic "ugly pop" inspired by a lot of 90s alt-rock but youthful exuberance and edge. Later releases from the band show more maturity and depth, but TBF has bangers. My faves include "Pretective Boy," "Cosmetic Skull," "Nothing More Than a Body," and "Picker of His Words."
Answer #2 (when image taken): Bob Marley: Easy Skanking in Boston '78 We recently watched Bob Marley: One Love (my review is mixed) and I wanted to listen to more of the music I heard in the movie, as I haven't intentionally exposed myself to much reggae. (Obviously knew some Marley, just not in depth.) This was the only CD vs e-music at the library. I most admire "War," "Get Up," and "Exodus."
Answer #3 (before CDs changed*): Nirvana: Nevermind (Superdeluxe 30th Anniv Ed.) (I mean, I also listened to Alice, Concrete, Hole, and Living Colour, but this was what was in the player at changeout.) It's hard to get newer CDs, especially of music that appeals to me, from the library. I didn't listen to the studio recording on this at all; just live. Sing-alongs: "Negative Creep," "Sliver," "Breed," "Smells Like THAT SONG," and "Territorial Pissings." * If I keep making y'all play this game, I'm only going to do it once a week with one answer, but I thought I'd do three days at first go really make it exciting! IT'S GRUELLIN⦠I MEAN GLORIOUS FUN, INNIT?

Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) (2016 Remaster)
youtube
I immersed myself in the "Seattle Sound" for the July 2024 issue of UMAmi, with two book reviews (on grunge and Nirvana,) an essay on being Gen X when "Teen Spirit" took hold, and a playlist of influences, examples, and "also arounds."
Yet due to a focus on punk/indie/alt-rock (and a bit of brevity,) I edited some sounds from my samples - particularly metal and Neil Young.
This song in particular has been an earworm of mine for a while; this is my favorite mix. (I'm not as fond of the acoustic version because there are perhaps only one or two instances EVER ON EARTH that I can stand to hear a harmonica.)
I think this is one of the best examples of the, ahem, echoes of Young's sound in those he affected - how his attitude, outlook, and style grew in others after him.
I hate to use a trite name ("Godfather of Grunge,") but without Young's heartbroken, heated, hopeless iconoclastic and uncompromising perseverance, there would not be any certain Smiley Face Shirts. π΅π

You do not need to be local to OKC to enjoy UMAmi!
Sure, our music calendar keeps you informed about everything that is going on at 89th Street, Beer City, Criterion, Diamond Ballroom, Factory Obscura, Jones Assembly, Resonant Head, Sanctuary, Tower, and many other places
PLUS
We offer casual "classified" announcements for music (and idea) makers to seek connections
BUT WE ALSO
Have articles, etc. EVERYONE (who is interested in various iterations of alt music and lifestyle confetti) can suck into their eyeholes!!!

How do you do, fellow kids? π§’ πΉ
I'm Granny Anarchy, and I write for a monthly music 'zine affiliated with the Oklahoma Underground Music Archive and the (Oklahoma City) Metropolitan Library System.
However, I am often so eager to share my experiences and excitement that those pages or playlists each month still feel like I'm leaving too much out.
I thought - I hoped - that other music lovers might enjoy a bit more, so I'm embarking on a personal side project. This Tumblr is currently unofficial and unsanctioned extra Anarchy. (Granny does not speak for any of the other roadies, UMAmi, the Oklahoma Underground Music Archive, nor the Metropolitan Library System. Granny Anarchy is going gung ho on her own!)
I'm planning on sharing earworms, general music trivia, Oklahoma music reviews and history, perhaps even behind-the-scenes zine goodies - just whatever strikes my Gen-X fancy! I intend to keep it casual, and have no schedule set.
Enjoy the euphonia!
