SUPER LATE POST 🤭 As a walk on from community college, feeling like you’re apart of the 4 year circuit can be challenging. #mytruth #cuteandcomfy #GMUYOUKNOW . . . This past weekend I competed at my last fall Virginia’s for Lovers Swing with the GMU speech team. Although it was a fantastic weekend with my team and my district, I decided not to spend the 15 dollars at Target on uncomfortable flats for my off rounds and wear what I had available at my house, so I could have enough money to buy panty hose and breakfast for the tournament. I’m a college student who pays for rent, school and life out of pocket with no financial assistance in terms of loans or scholarships. Many don’t know, I was unable to accept my Forensics scholarship because I cannot afford to take full time classes at Mason. I also am a student who has plantar fasciitis from working on my feet 70+ hours a week and refuses to wear heels all day because wearing my heels for my speeches is already pushing my limits. You never know what a student is going through. What I choose to wear on my feet when I am not performing should be none of your concern. Honestly what students wear in speech should be none of your concern. Due to the nature of this activity and being on a team that historically is known for it’s looks makes it hard for me to speak up on this issue. But also because of the nature of this activity it’s common to think that all of us are privileged to afford all of the conventions that come with Forensics. When you speak about someone’s appearance you are automatically commenting on their body, class status and personal choices. And why do that? If you do see a student with a suit, or bag that you think isn’t appropriate and you feel like you HAVE to say something, don’t gossip, ask what you can do to help. If someone honestly drops me because I wear sparkly shoes in between rounds then so be it. This mentality in forensics is elitist and arbitrary and I will not continue to allow it to effect my mentality as a speaker.
