He looked so peaceful.

Seungmin glowed under the moon, the light reflecting ethereally on his pale face. He shouldn’t have looked that angelic under the moon’s kiss, not when all the blood was draining from his body and soaking into the material of your clothes. His breathing was calm, way too shallow and much quieter than the hiccups that you relentlessly released as tears streamed down your face. It wasn’t fair how he was able to smile weakly, barely forcing a chuckle out of his mouth as he whispered how silly you were for crying. It wasn’t fair how cold he felt when his hand grasped yours. He mumbled about everyone being too loud with their shouting and the pounding of their feet on the concrete.

You were about to tell him to shut up. You were going to tell him that he was the silly one for taking the arrow to the chest. However, when he languidly blinked his eyes closed and laid more weight onto your arms, the words died in your throat.

“Hey, don’t fall asleep on me!” you cried out, cupping his face.

“You’re comfy,” he managed to murmur, struggling to open his eyes.

“Seungmin, no,” you frantically brushed your thumb on his cheek, “stay with me.” With your other free hand, you clasped the ring he offered to you just minutes ago. “You didn’t even finish proposing to me.”

Your eyes were open; his eyes were closed. Your temperature was rising; his was lowering. Your pulse pounded in your ears; his was slowing down. You swallowed, his body limp in your arms. He opened his mouth, releasing a promise with his last breath.

“What’s in the bag?”

“Ingredients.”

“For what?”

“You’ll see,” he smirked, placing the bag down on your kitchen.

You watched curiously as he rummaged through your kitchen, looking for the different utensils he would need. When everything was set, he scrolled through his phone and pressed play, music flowing out of the speaker he had brought.

You winced at the blaring bass that shook the counter. “Do you need to blast music?”

“You want me to turn it louder?” He teased, lowering down the volume.

He started to cut vegetables which prompted you to raise an eyebrow. “Since when did you learn to cook?”

Minho shrugged, transferring some of the sliced food into the pot on the stove, “When you told me that my cooking sucked.”

“I was just kidding,” you laughed, slightly appalled that he actually believed you.

“You said it was a bit salty...” he mumbled, shaking his head, “but whatever. Is it bad that I want to improve my cooking skills?”

You squinted your eyes at him. He was your best friend, you knew that he was hiding something. But you didn’t ask him anything because he put the stove on simmer and turned to you with a smile. 

You blame the dim kitchen lights for glowing beautifully around him for the butterflies in your stomach. You blame the slow song that started to play for the uncoordinated rhythm of your heart. You blame his stupid apron for the cheesy grin on your face. You blame his arms around your waist for the abnormal heat in your cheeks. You blamed the sparkle in his eyes for the courage that emerged in your throat.

“So-” you started.

“I-” he said at the same time. 

You both chuckled. “Go first,” you smiled.

He thought for a moment before a dreamy haze glazed over his eyes and he sighed. “I like someone.”

You ignored the sharp pain in your chest, “That’s great.”

A smile adorned his face, one that was quite different, one that you wished was directed towards you. “Yeah, we’re going on a date tomorrow.”

You swallowed, “Are you now?”

He looked into your eyes, “And I need your help preparing.”

“Ahh...Of course, you’re hopeless without me,” you dryly chuckled, “besides, what else are best friends for.” You bitterly muttered the last part, hating the way it left a trail of saltiness on your tongue.

“Yeah,” he agreed, “Anyways, what were you gonna say?”

“I-”

You were cut off by the timer. Minho excused himself as he unwrapped his hands around your waist and went over to the pot on the stove. You sat down at the kitchen counter and watched as he mixed the soup a bit before tasting it. You chuckled as he smacked his lips obnoxiously.

“Bon appetit!” He exclaimed, placing a bowl of steaming soup in front of you.

You smiled weakly and lifted the spoon. You felt like crying. This soup is, if not the best, one of the best soups you’ve ever tasted and you thought about how he made it, for you, for his best friend. You quickly swallowed the soup before giving him a tight lipped smile and a thumbs up.

“So, what were you gonna say earlier?” He asked, leaning against the counter and putting his chin in his hand.

You chuckled, “I was gonna say that I thought you would’ve burnt the house down by now, but I guess those cooking lessons paid off.”

The lie flew straight through your teeth, a confession jumbled in your throat.

He gave you an offended look, “Damn right it did! Isn’t this one of the best soups you’ve ever tasted?”

You nodded, “You’re right.”

He winked, “Of course I am.”

With of a roll of your eyes, you told him to tell you more about the person he liked. You wanted to see the dreamlike daze in his eyes as he talked about them, the way he shyly smiled muttered their name. 

They were just tiny things, tiny things that you so wished were directed towards you.

you blinked away the morning drowsiness in your eyes and sat up.

“what the hell felix?”

your boyfriend held his reddening cheek with one hand, “I was trying to give you a kiss.”

you made a face, “couldn’t you have done it like a normal person? like, you know, without sounding like a mosquito!”

he shrugged, “I thought it’d be funny.”

you pointed at the mark on his cheek, “that sure is hilarious.”
