"You must"
You have born all the grief that you could.
Worn all the scars, as you should. As
You must
And now that you're alone you want to return, only
You were sought out and
Asked to
Death was the last to leave, was the first to welcome and now again it
Asks you
You must
Do its bidding, it's what you do
Best
No one can do it like you, you were never like the rest
The rest is now to come
We've entered the final act
Don't fuss now, don't rest.
Coalesced — it must break apart.
You must, you can't retract your part

The stars tell of stories that happened thousands of years ago and will happen again in thousands of years. They stay the same and remain familiar.
You can call those stories fate.
Kokabiel saw those fates. Interpreted the weavings of Order (unaware of the importance however). He'd work days connecting the firmament. Relenting the chicanes of his peers
This persistency is what drew Death to the Angel. After his fall it was only sensible to not only give Kokabiel the chance for vengeance but also to put him even closer to fate. Grant him power over it.
And Death was right. Its knight was remarkable in the execution of fates. In dealing a swift end to them. The war got finished. Then he fell again.
As a prisoner of War he felt abandoned by Death. This as well as his other experiences during that time caused him to reject the mere concept of fate. Zaavan wanted nothing more than to be alone. To be self-sufficient.
For a while he was. But it didn't take long for him to notice that he never completely severed his connection to Death. The rider continued to keep an eye on him. Not so much a grasp however, it was the busiest rider after all.
Death would never shun this host again. Drawn to his grace in dealing with untimely fates after all those millennia and the belief that Zaavan is still immensely suited for following any kind of fate

Thinks about the scenario in Zaavan's mock forest, where he tells Anthra off so hard and to leave him alone that not only did he hurt him enough that the angel did stay away (added to the disturbance of the forest, inadvertently inviting so much more of the apocalypse to the world ('zaavan never did get to sever his connection to death completely'))
But also the forest reacted to his outburst formly and shortly after they had bid their bitter goodbyes, the poisonous roots clung around Zaavan, encasing him completely quicker than he could even think.
And he'd be shown what true solitude's like

In the fire

The world
And though they have failed their failure was key to the forthcoming phantoms
Who will have burnt up
Underneath their image

Attack sequences can be in the style of a rhythm game. With both directional buttons to hit and directionless for custom combos
Some more thoughts on game
Let's make it turn based combat. Less real time action means less.. action. Sprites and all. Also more options on how to deal with encounters. I want the player to be able to do a pacifist run.
But maybe make the battle screen more like Final fantasy instead of UT
Def have special abilities like Zaavan dealing out death like the host he is, maybe even have him conjure up the one wing then (hello sephiroth) Have them either be offensive or "act" abilities -> same resource to be used (like deltarune)
Escape out of war's imprisonment -> prologue. Ends with them on a material plane that was not their own which they notice but can't make sense of yet
Next game will just be in the same style but for the Famine cult cycle maybe with a short recap of what happened after we left off. Cycle/plane can be the same for tighter continuity.

But how to make the battle system engaging for modern audiences?
Bullet patterns like UT are hard and I think that would by that point be plagiarism
So button prompts to make the attack more powerful like mario&luigi? Or base attacks that have permutations depending on what buttons you press (I think one of the Lisa games had this?)
I feel like this could be engaging

Hoooouuuuhhh but going pacifist on War is gonna be weird
So like-- obvs she's not 'pacifiable' yet. The escape needs to be as challenging as her fight? Or some other solution is needed

On revolution and the natural Order of things
or Uh- Oh- Jaa'm brought out the Enlightenment style titles to talk about the silly little story
Anyways— I've always thought of fighting against the status quo to be a core component of this story here. Anthrazit And Zaavan are first seen complicit in higher structures (heaven and the resistance against it) which ultimately led them down a destructive path (to follow the riders).
Only after they have completely cut ties with both of these higher institutions they can begin to become who they really want to be.
Creation and destruction are part of a natural cycle. A force that has been in place for way longer than either of them have existed. Planes get destroyed after enough decay corrupted them to make place for new ones. This is how the deity Order has created the universe aeons ago. From Order sprang Chaos. And from their mix everything else came into existence.
The riders are part of that natural cycle of destruction, put in place by Order. They're instinctively wired to fulfill their purpose of corruption like a force of nature
That's why no other god of the many in the universe do anything against them even when their devoted followers are on the line. It's Supposed To Be Like This.
But the universe didn't expect something like Anthrazit And Zaavan. Who- as they became aware of what was happening behind the curtain wanted to take no part in watching civilization after civilization die.
At first they had no sense of the scale, thinking the riders are just behind this with a purely rotten desire for power. But as cycle after cycle came and went and battle after battle was wrought they noticed— None of this was ever going to change. The riders would never reach their goal of power bc even when they had the whole material plane under their control- it wouldn't last. It was always, and inevitably going to be destroyed.
Around that time Chaos was already well aware of their presence and with the duo getting to this conclusion it was time for it to spice things up a bit
With Chaos the two found a new adversary/companion. It switching roles like that is of no arbitrariness but simply a result of nature
Chaos' presence in the story will alleviate them from the tension the riders having given them and; more importantly, prepare them for their real "final Boss" Order.
If Zaavan and Anthrazit want to ultimately defeat the cycle system itself to stop the needles destruction of planes they need to take it up with Order and end its reign.

Viddy gaem aspirations
I have no idea how to make this story into a video game
It definitely won't be just one game.
What "arc" Would lend itself well to be gamified though?
What systems Would the game need — is it mostly just action packed sword swinging against the riders' henchmen with lots of the story telling inbetween?
A lot of focus runs on the underlying aspect of helping other people — it's the way for Anthrazit And Zaavan to stop the apocalypse most of the time and ofc they also want to help each other which they can only do after healing/helping themselves
How can someone make interactions like these have a meaningful impact on the player? While still having the game be manageable to develop by two people
