Assignment 1 : Framing the image
Lee Friedlander
Lee Friedlandern is known as a master of contemporary photography and often expresses himself through his photographs in the most unusual way possible. Whether it be from the composition of the photograph or the landscape itself, he makes sure to evoke feelings of tension, peculiarity and unease. In order to create those feelings of tension, he often takes his pictures on desolate streets and takes them in black and white to create a more darker atmosphere. He would play with either reflections on windows, shadows, or even the subject itself.
For example, we see in the following image an example of his work which is a true representation of “an image being worth a thousand words”. We can assume from the way the child was taken in this photograph a possible story or opinion on racism.

Although a lot of his work displays a story or an opinion behind his photographs, they can also have absolutely no meaning behind it, and yet, still make you appreciate the way it was taken.

All in all, Lee Friendlander’s use of black and white, composition and the locations he chooses for each photograph makes his work extremely unique and eye-catching to anyone who sees it.

Andre Kertesz
Ande Kertesz is a reknown Hungarian photographer who takes photographs with an emotional impact over technique. “I just walk around, observing the subject from various angles until the picture elements arrange themselves into a composition that pleases my eye.” Although it may sound like he takes his photos unintentionally, the photographer does put a lot of thought in the composition of each photograph. We often find in my many of his artworks the shadows views in a whole other way, or even a series of patterns.
Just like Lee Friedlandler, his photographs becomes his words in photojournalism. Sometimes they will have meaning, and sometimes they simply display an interesting point of view of the subject. For example, in the picture seen below, we see a series of dogs with a very harsh cast shadow. This creates an illusion of a pattern throughout the entire picture without the use of photoshop or any other editing tools.

All in all, Andre Kertesz caught my eye with his unique composition of his subjects and encourages me to take more photographs with a different point of view.
