Demeter
I drew Persephone awhile ago so I thought I would draw my interpretation of Demeter next. I based her off of a Longhorn cow since I kinda gave my interpretation of Persephone a deer/cow motif.
Tumblr media
That being said time for my opinion of Demeter(Warning I have strong opinions):
I really don’t like how Demeter is often portrayed as the “overbearing abusive mother” in modern retellings of Greek Mythology. I’ve always seen her as a hard working goddess who cares a lot about most of her children. She straight up loses her daughter to Hades who kidnaps her (she doesn’t just walk in or willing goes with him Hades kidnaps Persephone) . However in her myth Demeter was able to beat a man and get her daughter back even if was only for half of the time. Yes, maybe the way she went about it can be seen as destructive but her myth is meant to explain how the seasons were created and how far a mother will go to get her daughter back safely. That’s why Demeter is one of my favorite goddesses she was willing to go lengths to get her daughter back from her kidnapper. Though often times in Modern Media she’s pushed aside as being “overbearing” in order to focus on Hades and Persephone relationship and make her out to be the villain. In my opinion I don’t see Hades and Persephone as some “UWU goth couple” I see a man who kidnapped his niece in order to marry her. I’ll share a lot more opinions on Hades when I get around to drawing him. I personally don’t view him as like the “Devil” but just because he was mostly chill in the myths still doesn’t make him a good person for what he did to Persephone in most tellings. Overall, Demeter is a mother who lost her child which can symbolize how often Mother’s lost their daughters to marriage or were ripped away in death back then.
I also want to add there are many telling of myths to do with Persephone and Demeter that existed before “Hymn to Demeter” and other tellings but I’m strictly referring to the myths that involve Persephone’s kidnapping. I’m also not saying you can’t like Hades x Persphone it’s just the more I learn about the actual myths the more I’ve come to dislike it especially when Demeter is being villainzed. I also don’t like it when people will deny important parts of the myth or think Hades and Persephone’s relationship was healthy when in my opinion it really wasn’t.
Again these are my opinions and just what I think from viewing the myths.

The last part made me CACKLE. Not to mention that I find something really annoying about the way this author whines about her through Calliope; Like, bitch, you're telling me this is supposed to be a feminist retelling of the Trojan war and the woman literally STARTED EVERYTHING, whose face launched a THOUSAND SHIPS with that saying being where you got the title for this damn book from, is where you draw the line.
"wahh wahh I've had enough of Helen!! People talk about her too much!" Gee it's almost like her kidnapping started the entire Trojan war or something 😑 The fact that Paris and Aphrodite, who kidnapped and abused her agency, get more actual screentime and respectful characterization by the narrative fucking infuriates me. If it's any woman from the illiad that deserves to have her story told after decades of mischaracterization and being silenced, it's Helen. Both Paris and Aphrodite deserves way more slander than this bullshit.
This might just be a *me* thing, but I do find it kind of fascinating that almost every Feminist Greek Myth Retelling seems compelled to flatten Helen into a two-dimensional basic-bitch with no guilt or remorse for her actions despite the fact that self-loathing for her own beauty, a feeling of a lack of agency in the face of Aphrodite's whims and a complicated affection for and loyalty to both the Greeks and the Trojans are all major characteristics of hers in both The Odyssey and The Iliad. I'm sure this has nothing to do with the dynamics of modern feminism and patriarchy whatsoever.

Hello,,
My name is Ashraf Alanqar, and I am 30 years old. My wife, Widad Issa, and I have a one-and-a-half-year-old son named Bakr. We used to live peacefully in the Al-Shuja’iya neighborhood, in a house we built just a week before the war began. I worked as a farmer and owned a large chicken farm that provided for my family.
Beloved of my heart (Bakr)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then the war came and destroyed everything. Our home was reduced to ashes, and our chicken farm was obliterated. We lost our home, our livelihood, and even our basic rights. We've been forced to move from place to place in northern Gaza, simply trying to survive.
My House before...
Tumblr media
Me.. while trying to recognize what has happened..
Tumblr media
The terror we feel as we flee from heavy bombardment is unbearable. The sound of explosions around us, the constant fear as we navigate through the rubble of destroyed homes searching for safety and food, haunts us every day. My son Bakr is constantly scared and suffers from severe malnutrition and skin diseases due to the lack of food, water, and sanitation.
Our beautiful memories.. :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We urgently need your help. I am asking for your support to fund this campaign to move my family to a safe place, provide us with a proper home, and ensure we have enough food, water, and medical care.

Your donation, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in our lives. We desperately need your support and solidarity during this difficult time. Together, we can restore hope and safety to Ashraf and his family.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering my plea. Your support means more than words can express. Together, we can turn a story of loss into a journey of hope and resilience.
With deepest gratitude,
Ashraf & the Family

So, I LOVE Epic: This Musical and I'm excited for some of the songs in the Circe Saga, but one of TWO songs that I absolutely DESPISE in this musical is coming out and I'm so stressed out about it.
"There Are Other Ways" and "I'm Not Sorry For Loving You" make me so frustrated because it looks like they fall into downplaying the coercion and abuse Odysseus went through because the abusers are women. AND I HATE THAT.
"There Are Other Ways" is a song between a person who has power to force a person into doing what they want (Circe) and their victim (Odysseus), who can only comply. And from what I've read it has the line "There's no puppet here."
It's really clever writing because if you know the story, you know Odysseus is in a precarious situation and he was told by Hermes that when she asked to sleep with him, he needed to do it. Here's three different translations of the moment Hermes tells him "Don't you tell her no" with the warning from Hermes bolded:
"'And I will tell thee all the baneful wiles of Circe. She will mix thee a potion, and cast drugs into the food; but even so she shall not be able to bewitch thee, for the potent herb that I shall give thee will not suffer it. And I will tell thee all. When Circe shall smite thee with her long wand, then do thou draw thy sharp sword from beside thy thigh, and rush upon Circe, as though thou wouldst slay her. And she will be seized with fear, and will bid thee lie with her. Then do not thou thereafter refuse the couch of the goddess, that she may set free thy comrades, and give entertainment to thee. But bid her swear a great oath by the blessed gods, that she will not plot against thee any fresh mischief to thy hurt, lest when she has thee stripped she may render thee a weakling and unmanned.’
“ ‘And I will tell you of all the wicked witchcraft that Circe will try to practice upon you. She will mix a potion for you to drink, and she will drug the meal with which she makes it, but she will not be able to charm you, for the virtue of the herb that I shall give you will prevent her spells from working. I will tell you all about it. When Circe strikes you with her wand, draw your sword and spring upon her as though you were going to kill her. She will then be frightened, and will desire you to go to bed with her; on this you must not directly refuse her, for you want her to set your companions free, and to take good care also of yourself, but you must make her swear solemnly by all the blessed gods that she will plot no further mischief against you, or else when she has got you naked she will unman you and make you fit for nothing.’
"I will tell you all Circe’s fatal wiles. She will mix a drink for you, blending drugs with the food, but even so she will fail to enchant you: the powerful herb I will give you will prevent it. Let me tell you the rest. When Circe strikes you with her length of wand, draw your sharp sword and rush at her, as if you intend to kill her. She will be seized with fear. Then she’ll invite you to her bed, and don’t refuse the goddess’ favours, if you want her to free your men, and care for you too. But make her swear a solemn oath by the blessed gods that she won’t try to harm you with her mischief, lest when you are naked she robs you of courage and manhood.”’
He had no choice in the matter. It was a "you will have to sacrifice yourself OR you will never get your men back and you won't be safe if you don't do it" moment. While Circe's not telling this directly to Odysseus, it's still COERCION because he knows if he says "No, I want to be faithful to my wife" Circe will harm him. But a lot of people don't know that and are going to continue to perpetuate the idea that Odysseus cheated on his wife. 😒 And they're going to use that line of "There's no puppets here" as "proof" that Odysseus cheated.
Tumblr media
If you can sympathize with Ovid's later adaptation of Medusa as a victim of Poseidon, but refuse to acknowledge Odysseus was as much a victim of Circe AND Calypso and claim he's cheating... Please, ask yourself: why is that?

I hate it when I have to bear the weight of a song with an epic bridge but the rest of the song is dogshit. Of course I could just skip to the good part but then I wouldn't be practicing my virtuous skills in patience and tolerance.

DON'T TAG AS ANYTHING
I'm making it my goal to evacuate Momen's family as fast as humanly possible. I can not bear seeing how slow donations move every day, and I can't let anyone get as lax as they have currently.
Keeping it short: we need to reach a short term goal of 7,787 euros by August 24th to be able to evacuate four family members. His nephew has polio. His father has diabetes and has no insulin. Vetted 125 on the spreadsheet.
€20,213/€70,000, and €0/€7,787 (short term). Three days left. Don't let this go.

Phew. This one took, uh… a bit longer than expected due to other projects both irl and art-wise, but it’s finally here. The long-awaited domestic animal infographic! Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough space to cover every single domestic animal (I’m so sorry, reindeer and koi, my beloveds) but I tried to include as many of the “major ones” as possible.
I made this chart in response to a lot of the misunderstandings I hear concerning domestic animals, so I hope it’s helpful!
Further information I didn’t have any room to add or expand on:
🐈 “Breed” and “species” are not synonyms! Breeds are specific to domesticated animals. A Bengal Tiger is a species of tiger. A Siamese is a breed of domestic cat.
🐀 Different colors are also not what makes a breed. A breed is determined by having genetics that are unique to that breed. So a “bluenose pitbull” is not a different breed from a “rednose pitbull”, but an American Pitbull Terrier is a different breed from an American Bully! Animals that have been domesticated for longer tend to have more seperate breeds as these differing genetics have had time to develop.
🐕 It takes hundreds of generations for an animal to become domesticated. While the “domesticated fox experiment” had interesting results, there were not enough generations involved for the foxes to become truly domesticated and their differences from wild foxes were more due to epigenetics (heritable traits that do not change the DNA sequence but rather activate or deactivate parts of it; owed to the specific circumstances of its parents’ behavior and environment.)
🐎 Wild animals that are raised in human care are not domesticated, but they can be considered “tamed.” This means that they still have all their wild instincts, but are less inclined to attack or be frightened of humans. A wild animal that lives in the wild but near human settlements and is less afraid of humans is considered “habituated.” Tamed and habituated animals are not any less dangerous than wild animals, and should still be treated with the same respect. Foxes, otters, raccoons, servals, caracals, bush babies, opossums, owls, monkeys, alligators, and other wild animals can be tamed or habituated, but they have not undergone hundreds of generations of domestication, so they are not domesticated animals.
🐄 Also, as seen above, these animals have all been domesticated for a reason, be it food, transport, pest control, or otherwise, at a time when less practical options existed. There is no benefit to domesticating other species in the modern day, so if you’ve got a hankering for keeping a wild animal as a pet, instead try to find the domestic equivalent of that wild animal! There are several dog breeds that look and behave like wolves or foxes, pigeons and chickens can make great pet birds and have hundreds of colorful fancy breeds, rats can be just as intelligent and social as a small monkey (and less expensive and dangerous to boot,) and ferrets are pretty darn close to minks and otters! There’s no need to keep a wolf in a house when our ancestors have already spent 20,000+ years to make them house-compatible.
🐖 This was stated in the infographic, but I feel like I must again reiterate that domestic animals do not belong in the wild, and often become invasive when feral. Their genetics have been specifically altered in such a way that they depend on humans for optimal health. We are their habitat. This is why you only really see feral pigeons in cities, and feral cats around settlements. They are specifically adapted to live with humans, so they stay even when unwanted. However, this does not mean they should live in a way that doesn’t put their health and comfort as a top priority! If we are their world, it is our duty to make it as good as possible. Please research any pet you get before bringing them home!

"you can cull invasive species but you shouldn't enjoy it" no actually I think people should in fact be allowed to enjoy helping their fucking environment.
People in Australia hunting and shooting cats and being proud of it and making hats out of their fur? Good for fucking them. You don't get to tell people they are not allowed to have fun with killing invasive species that are destroying their native ecosystems. People are in fact allowed to enjoy hunting and it does not in fact make them a bad or cruel person. No, not even if the animal they're hunting is feral cats.
You do not get to demand people feel bad about killing invasive species just because you'd feel bad about doing the same. Especially when the invasive species was something specifically brought over by white colonizers.
Stop fucking shaming people for killing invasive species. Stop demanding people feel bad about killing invasive species. Stop demanding that people who kill invasive species live up to your "tragic but necessary" idea of how this is supposed to work. People do not have to feel sad for the invasive species they kill to be doing good fucking work.
