"Girl from nowhere" and the real cases behind it (Part 1)

Girl from nowhere is a Thai drama/mystery series where in each episode an enigmatic and inhuman girl named Nanno goes to a different school and brings out the worst and sometimes even the most vulnerable parts out of some of the more problematic individuals of each school.

The premise of almost every episode is loosely or directly inspired by a real Thai incident and I wanted to find what some of those inspirations might have been.

Some things to get out of the way:

1) I'm not Thai myself so some information on these cases might have been mistranslated or lost.

There might have even been some Thai cases that would fit those episodes better than the ones I have chosen .

1) The ugly truth (S1E1)

Episode premise: Nanno transfers to a school with the reputation of "Purest School of the Year" but soon finds out that one of the teachers preys on the young students, films himself r*ping them and later uses the video as blackmailing material to stop them from speaking against him. Nanno makes sure to give him some karma in the end.

The real case

Suankularb Wittayalai is a high-profile,elite all-boys secondary school. In 2016, 33 year old biology teacher Sarot Meephai was accused of sexually assaulting underage boys,filming said content and distributing child p*rn*graphy.

Sarot denied this, saying that the people he had sex with were over the age of 20. A bit after the accusations a facebook message was posted on a page called "Nakrian Suankularb" about an inappropriate act involving a schoolteacher.

Many clips involved the teacher sexually abusing male students from several schools ( the perpetretors face was blurred out).Those videos were posted on Twitter by a user named k @uhbbjhbj. The account belonged to Sarot and has since been suspended.

When confronted with this,Sarot denied being the one responsible of the distribution of these clips. But he did admit that he had "sex" with underage prostitutes he met on dating websites. The police later found a number of videos and pictures containing "what appeared to be sexual abuse" on Sarots mobile phone.

The school went out and said that they "doubt this scandal would hurt the school's reputation as it is more of a personal matter".

2) Minnie and the four bodies (S2E3)

Episode premise: "Minnie" a teenage girl from a wealthy family, kills 4 highschool girls while drunk driving. Due to her wealthy status she doesn't face any real consequences for this, letting her rich father do all the talking and manipulate the media into painting his daughter as a victim.

People outraged by this use the hashtag #MinnieFourBodies to talk about their anger towards this case.Nanno will not allow Minnie to get away with this scott-free.

The real case

A wealthy, then 17 year old named Orachorn "Praewa" Thephasadin Na Ayudhya was an unlicenced driver that crashed into the back of a public van and killed 9 people while injuring 6 more in December of 2010.

The survivors of the crash eventually revealed that they hadn't received any kind of compensation not even an apology from Praewa and her family. The Supreme Court ordered Praewa, her parents and the person who lent her the car to pay large sums to the injured and the deceased.

Since the defendants had reportedly disobeyed court order. The victims could submit a request to a court to issue a legal execution warrant and seize the defendants assets instead. So the victims were urged to seek help from the Legal Execution Department or The Justice Ministry Joint Service Center.

The defendants who didn't show to hear Supreme Court verdict should have paid the compensation within 30 days.But any kind of response from them was non-existent.

This lack of action caused outrage on social media and used the #PraiwaNineCorpses to talk about their anger over the lack of proper punishment. According to court documents Praiwa changed her name twice going from "Buabucha Devahastin Na Ayudhya" to "Rawinpirom Arunwong".

Now she's living an apperantly happy life having been married to a succesful politician in 2014. Praewa never faced any kind of prison time for her actions instead receiving only a four year suspended sentence. She was also ordered to serve 138 hours of community service ( reduced from the original 144 hours because she donated blood 🙄) which she completed in 2016 and was banned from driving till the age of 25.

This case is well known in Thai media as another example of "the wealthy and well connected being above the law and immune to consequence".

3) SOTUS (S2E5)

Episode premise: A senior student named Kaye takes things too far while hazing a group of students in relentlessly cruel and inhumane ways, killing one as a result. Now it's Nanno's turn to break his spirit.

The real case

Hierarchy is rife amid the student body in universities where seniority takes precedence when it comes to earning respect.Everyone is expected to follow the SOTUS code of conduct. Seniority Order Tradition Unity and Spirit.

The purpose of SOTUS is to hone a sense of unity and regularity among freshmen.However what at first is aimed to promote camaderie and harmony can turn cruel,humiliating and even deadly.

That was the case with 20 year old Phornphiphat Eaddam who was taking part in an event on the volleyball court at the Phuket Ratchapat University in southern Thailand. She reportedly made mistakes during her cheerleading routine and was forced to run eight laps of the court, in the blazing heat and without any water.

Phornphiphat whose nickname was "Mint" collapsed on the sixth lap and was rushed to the Vachira Phucket Hospital. The next day the student's heart stopped beating and medics couldn't revive her. Phornphiphat's devastated family had made a police complaint after university bosses wrongly told them that she had died from fainting.

Phornphiphat's lungs were bleeding and she died from extreme physical exertion. Mint's grieving father Kanong Eaddam demanded truthful answers from the university and the cheerleading team.The university deam Theerapong Noochaikaew claimed that Phornphiphat's death "was not related to hazing".

An anonymous senior student admitted that they forced Eaddam to run eight laps and they were ordered to pay 20K baht. No one else was sued nor paid any kind of compensation.

Unfortunetely this is not an isolated event.

In Thailand abuse in hazing has led to the deaths of multiple students every year. From hazing rituals living one student comatose in 2019, to an incident in 2007 when a student burned alive after being forced to roll in a fire. In 2016 a 16 year old student named Pokai Saengrojrat was beaten to death at the beach during a hazing tradition.

Facebook groups against SOTUS have displayed their own horrific experiences of abuse they had faced from their seniors. Being forced to eat or drink disgusting stuff, lick the ground or other uncleanly surfaces, strip naked, do mortifying activities while in the nude or even be beaten physically as a form of punishment.

4)The Judgement (S2E8)

Episode premise: In the season finale Nanno navigates the complex lives of a wheelchair-bound girl named Junko and her mother Waan. Whilst cutting paper Junko gets a cut.

This draws the attention of her classmates that inform Nanno that Junko has haemophilia and needs to be rushed in the infirmary.They also donate to a page dedicated to raising money for Junko's medical expenses.

Eventually we find out that Waan has been injecting weakening agents into her daughter's body to prevent her "monster" of a daughter from violently killing even more people.She's also secretly saving the donation money to compensate for the families Junko has hurt.

The real case

In 2020, 29 year old mother Nittha Wongwan asserted that her kids were heavilly ill from a rare genetic disorder that required costly treatment. She posted her family's struggles on social media.Her family consisted of a 2 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. Her posts caused public sympathy to pour in as she constantly updated her followers on her children's condition. She even shared with them the moment her daughter died. According to press reports, Nittha received more than 20 million baht from online sympathisers.

Had doctors not intervened the 2 year old boy would have been poisoned to death by his mother. Unfortunately the boy's 4 year old sister could not be saved her, mother had already killed her.Both children suffered similiar symptoms, burnt lips,damaged digestive tracks and vomiting of blood. Doctors at Thamasat University Hospital became suspicious when the toddler's recovery after medical treatment stopped improving everytime he was fed by his mother. After a thorough medical examination the doctors pressed charges against her for poisoning her son with toxic chemicals.

Unsuprisingly enough Nihtta became the target of public outrage for her cruel acts of violence against her kids.

The so called "bleach mom" has been arrested but she denied the premeditated murder allegations. The boy is now staying with social workers in a state shelter. DNA testing revealed that while the young boy is Nihtta's biological child the deceased girl was not. She adopted the baby girl from a desperate teenage mom who used social media to find someone that would take care of her baby girl from an unexpected pregnancy.

The media then started hounding the girl's biological mother who ,undestandably, felt scared and fled her home.

5)Trap (S1E9)

Episode premise: a group of students turn on one another while hiding in their classroom from an escaped murderer that killed her classmate with a knife.

The real case

The episode seems to be very loosely inspired on this incident.On September 9 2005 thirty one year old Jitrlada Tantiwanichyasuk (spellings of her name seem to vary) entered Saint Joseph's Covent a prestigious,all girls school and stabbed four girls with a knife. She entered a school classroom and started randomly attacking students before escaping.The victims between the ages of 12-14 were rushed to the hospital all of them seriously injured and one in critical condition.The attacker was reportedly living with her aunt in Bangkok's Thaphra area while her mother Thanyaporn Tantiwanichayakul lives in Nakhon Pathom. The mother said her daughter sought mental health treatment from several healthcare providers "But she would never hurt anyone" she insisted.

The stabbing happened shortly after 7am when parents were dropping their children off to class and many students were dancing and exercising on the open air ground floor of the school.

" I was watching the students dancing when I saw a P.E teacher carrying a student soaked in blood in his arms and rushed her into a school van.Shortly thereafter another teacher came along carrying another injured student.I knew then there was something wrong." Claimed one parent that at the moment of the crime was dropping his daughter off to class.Teachers soon called on their students to go inside their classrooms and parents were ushered out of school grounds.

Some parents were so shocked that they fainted.Many others tried to frantically contact their children via cellphone.Convent Road,where the school is located was quickly closed to traffic as police officers,reporters and many parents who later heard of the attack flocked to the school.

An hour after the stabbing the police arrived.The school locked their students in the classrooms.Police officers and teachers scoured the compound to check whether the attacker was still on school grounds. At 10 am the school started checking parents ID cards before allowing them to pick up their children.The students were required to stay in their classrooms till their parents arrived.All classes were suspended for the day.

Soon after the attack Jitrlada was found and arrested.When asked about the motive behing the assault she claimed that "voices from heaven guided her to do so".She was sentenced to four years in prison.The victims of the stabbing were:

Chayamon Trailertsamut (14): She sustained four knife wounds on her left arm and chest.

Chamanat Arif (12): She needed an operation since the knife cut into her liver and kidney.

Jinjutha Rerkisirinukool (13): She needed an operation since the knife pierced her intestine.

Apisatha Boonnam (14): She was in the most critical condition since she suffered stab wounds on her left shoulder, back, chest and her lung was punctured.

Thankfully all the girls survived and managed to recover from their wounds.

Unfortunately in 2020 Jitrlada fatally stabbed a young girl at an indoor food stall in the Nakhon Pathom province.The victim's grandmother was cooking an order for Jitrlada when she heard the girl cry in the back of the room where she was sleeping.She saw her grandaughter covered in blood and Jitrlada was gone.Jitrlada's mother brought her to the police station where she appeared upset and incoherent.

After her initial imprisoment in 2005 she was released in 2009 and was sent for treatment in a mental health institution.Jitrlada had been held at the institution for a month after displaying agressive and violent tendencies.

The victim would have turned 5 years old in a few days.
