When she messages him again, he’s elbow-deep in coding, attempting to reconfigure Frank’s ClassPass system so that it automatically disables itself outside of his club. There’ve been too many times when he’s gone to test it, forgot to remove it, and promptly fell down the cliffside while trying to shift over to Fractured ImAge.

The bloop on his minicom yanks him from his focus. Part of him is grateful for the distraction.

[ AdminCharlie ] Yeeeeeah I figured you’d be a fan of the explosives. [ AdminCharlie ] Damn. Darkspire already. Okay. Haha. Uh… kinda high level area if you’re just starting out?

Weird. He thought she was a casual. What’s she doing all the way in Darkspire already? Whatever, once she hits the sewer levels, those explosives are going to bite her in the ass.

[ AdminCharlie ] It’s long. That’s supposed to be almost endgame.

[ F1SHB0NEZ ]  ok thats what i thought lolololol [ F1SHB0NEZ ]  technically i came here frum the goblin caverns but also wanted a CHALLANGE the at level dungeons were too easy mode

In truth, the sewer gas mechanic and tight spaces in the lower levels had been kind of kicking her ass. She’d had to pause talking to Charlie so that she could figure out how to progress after the first or second time blowing herself up by accident. It doesn’t hold her up for long, though. As it turns out, she can trigger explosions at certain points to make chain reactions that go around corners. With a little bit of careful thinking (which is to say, fifteen minutes of madcap calculations of video game angles and explosion routes) she has started progressing fast again. 

She clears the final boss zombie-dragon in a grand total of four button presses. It’s a fun game, for her, though as she goes through her loot, she’s thinking more about ways to abuse the numbers than the story part.

[ F1SHB0NEZ ]  ok so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [ F1SHB0NEZ ]  turned my shard frostbow flurry into an ability using the glitch w/ the blacksmith’s storage and rings in the first town n now the stamina reducing feature from shattered crown applies 2 it so i can spam it and also i can use grenades w it instead of arrows its called PRO STRATS (JINX WINS) <3 [ F1SHB0NEZ ]  i do think hell crashers still my favorite tho ;) unless u can point me to something i won’t KABOOM

In fact, she has kidnapped one of the cabinets and lugged the whole thing down into her little rat nest under the firework factory, and reconnected everything herself, to boot. She’s played through the first bit already, gone item hunting, found herself a particularly nasty glitch to abuse, and is now cruising through a dungeon that’s way over her head in level.

She shoots Charlie a message back a little while later.

     Powder hears the door open and then close in the room below, followed by the sounds of footsteps coming down the stairs. They know it has to be either Vander or Violet—Mylo and Claggor had some sort of chore they’d promised to do for Benzo, so those two would be out for most of the day. Hopefully not them, anyway. The boys were the last people they wanted to talk to right now.

     “Powder?”

     Deep voice. Gentle tone. It’s Vander. They scoot out of their hiding place among the rafters, crawling on their belly to peek just the top of their head over the edge. Vander is sitting on the couch in the room below, but he’s looking up, and he sees them right away. Raising a hand in greeting, he says, “You wanna come down, kiddo? Don’t have to, of course, but you can if you wanna talk.”

     Then he looks away, grabs himself a bottle of water off the table, waiting for them to decide. It doesn’t take more than a moment. Powder disappears back into the ceiling for just a moment, silently moving to the opening over the sitting area, and then drops down onto the couch next to him. They curl into a tight ball immediately, knees pulled up under their chin.

     Vander puts a hand on their shoulder. “I heard some from Vi, but do you want to tell me what happened?”

     “We were just outside the lanes. Mylo wanted to pickpocket this guy.” They say, voice just barely loud enough to be audible. “It turned out he had a bunch of thugs with him though, so we ran. But I went the wrong way and ran into Enforcers. They—thought we were being suspicious, so they searched us. Is... Violet still mad at me?”

     “Mad at you?” Vander leans back, turning to look at her, “Did she say she was mad at you?”

     “—no.” Powder admits, “...but she hasn’t spoken to me since we got back, and she seemed upset, so I thought...”

     They trail off, uncurling and scooting over so they can rest their head on Vander’s arm. He responds by putting an arm around their shoulders and giving them a light squeeze, before finally saying, “Don’t think she’s mad at you. I think Violet got scared.” 

     “Scared?” That doesn’t seem right. “Of the enforcers?”

     “Aye.” Vander nods, “Scary situation, that. Your sister’s a big girl, and she’s good at hiding it, but things do rattle her sometimes. Probably worried about you, too. Not mad, just... worried about what could have happened. I would’ve been, if it were me.” 

     Powder considers this. If Vander’s saying it, it’s probably true. They look up at him, and then back down at their hands, clasped together in their lap. They’d been scared too, it was scary. But Vander? Violet? Dear, brave Violet? They loom so large as people. Not mad, though. Just scared.

     As if listening to her thoughts, Vander adds, “You can be brave and still frightened of things. Person who never gets scared isn’t brave, just foolish.”

     There’s something illuminating about that. There’s nothing about this idea that could make Powder thing less of either of them, but... you too, Violet? It makes sense with how she’d been acting.

    “You think I should go talk to her?”

    “I think she’d appreciate that.” And, with a wave, Vander adds, “She’s upstairs in the corner booth. Ask Jord to bring you something to eat.”

    They lean up and hug Vander tightly around the neck. He hugs them in return, patting them gently on the back. He’s always good for that. “Thanks.” Powder says, after a long moment.

    Vander watches from the basement couch as they stand up, and then run towards the stairs leading up to the main part of the building, climbing up halfway on all fours, before disappearing out the door.
