you lay on your bed, thinking if everything just went wrong, or worse; over.

rewind

after he picks you up, you hang out with his friends for a bit, the four of you stayed inside of the campus for a bit to get a bit of silence from the upcoming roaring ncu students arriving for the festival.

“no way you actually signed sion up for those crappy dating games?” you laughed at the information yushi leaked to you, hand over your lips.

“i swear i thought he was kidding because he said it through texts but he gave me the coupon pass for the game and it’s actually legit!” sion slumps on his chair, eyeing yushi.

you were busy laughing alongside sion and yushi, that you didn’t even notice riku was just watching you laugh, a smile of awe on his face.

without uttering a word, he takes off his leather jacket, placing it on your lap. the whole group got silent.

sion and yushi have seen how your dynamic is with riku the last time you guys hung out, but today felt different—like riku is making a move on you, but he isn’t at the same time.

a situationship that isn’t a situationship.

sion and yushi eye each other, both pair of eyes bulging out, no way their friend maeda riku can be a gentleman?

at this point, this was the norm for you, but your heart thumps a thousand times faster. “thank you kuri.”

he gives you a nod, but his eyes filled with words, maybe admiration. sion and yushi just watches, if they could lean forward without getting noticed—they would.

sion coughs, catching both of your attentions, “hey kuri,” he says, emphasizing the nickname. “are you gonna play any games later?”

riku shakes his head, “nah, i’ll just watch you guys play them.”

yushi furrows his brows, “why not? it’s gonna be fun!” he replies.

still, riku turns it down, and both his friends are confused. though they don’t mention anything else relating to the topic.

after taking some pictures, they leave the building, blending in with the crowd, and riku stays behind you, hands itching to just hold your waist, or your hand, anything really.

each close encounter with a bump on your shoulder, he was there to put a hand on your shoulder, or even pulling you closer to him. you try your best to ignore it, telling yourself he’s the type of friend to be a but overprotective, but you can’t be that blind, right?

soon enough you got dragged away by your friends, who are just itching to ask you so many questions.

“so is today your date with riku?” sungchan asks, his arms crossed while he eyes you.

“date? oh god no! why would me and him go on a date? it’s not like he asked me out?” you denied, brows furrowed.

“how come he has to be the one to ask? you can ask him out too, you know?” sungchan shrugs, but what he said earned him a slap on his arm, a flick on the forehead, and “dumbass” from his roommate.

“the guy does the asking, not the girl.” ningning replies, her arm around your shoulders.

“just saying! imma guess riku picked y/n up and she hung out with him before we had to drag her away from him.” he concludes, you look away, because wow, he got all details right.

“no way? he even picked you up?” jisung gasps, hand over his mouth.

“he does it all the time—“

“oh babes we are not gonna listen to whatever excuse you have this time, we are gonna go have some fun!” ningning cuts you off, and you were flabbergasted, and glared at the two men who are laughing at you.

around two hours have passed, the four of you played games, losing and winning, hollering at each other, now you guys are taking a break, sitting at one of the picnic benches that have been set up, eating a bit of snacks and some drinks.

your eyes wonder at the crowd, as if you were looking for someone, mindlessly sipping your drink.

“are you looking for someone, y/nnie?” jisung asks, making sungchan and ningning look at you, all of them snickering at you.

“your research boyfriend is there somewhere, don’t worry y/n.” sungchan nudges your side, and you roll your eyes.

as if on cue, your phone buzzed. you turn it on to see that riku messaged you, your pursed lips now turned into a wide smile.

you stand up after finishing the conversation with riku, “i gotta go i forgot about my fucking research.” you excused yourself, ignoring the teasing coming from the three of your friends.

you walk faster than usual, maybe from the panic that you forgot about your research? or maybe so you can spend time with riku longer?

you finally reached the dating games, each booths filled with desperate students, you wonder just how desperate do you need to be to join a college dating game.

you finally see his back, and you just stand there, admiring his back—the volume of his hair, his black leather that suits him so well, the black jeans that pairs well with his entire fit.

you admired for a solid three minutes, before realizing that you probably look like a creep. you take a deep breath before walking up to him, hands on his shoulders, chin on his shoulder. “hey kuri.”

his heart quite literally thumped out of his chest—no way his face and your face are this close? “hey y/nnie.” he greets you back, watching you give him a big smile before standing next to him, losing contact from you.

“is that sion?” you ask, seeing a familiar figure right in front of you, as one of the participants.

riku nods, smiling ear to ear. “yup! yushi ran away before sion can even curse the fuck out of him.” he continued, laughing as he watches his friend getting forced to talk to a girl he doesn’t even want to talk to.

you laugh with him, seeing how sion eyes riku over and over again. you watch students apply for multiple of the dating booths, so you’re taking this chance to make notes for the research. “kuri, do you have a pen and a notebook?”

“pretty, why would i carry a pen and a notebook during a festival?” he replies, a cheeky smile on his face, as he casually slings his arm around your shoulders.

you roll his eyes, and he does have a point, but obviously you won’t make it obvious that he has a point. you grab your phone and open your notes app, writing everything you have observed down.

“y/n, are you seriously writing down notes in the middle of a festival?” he teased, a smile on his face that you can barely resist.

“isn’t this why you called me here?” you asked, eyes on your phone, but you can see from your peripheral that he’s just looking at you, smile never disappearing.

“not really, i wanted an excuse to hang out with you.” he shrugged, his eyes now back to sion.

your cheeks burned, and you’re pretty sure your ears turned cherry-colored,

you are far long gone.

“no way mark just performed i swear him and i made eye contact and we connected.” riku says in awe, his eyes wide open.

“did you pee your pants?” yushi asked teasingly, patting riku’s back, to which he swatted away.

“you suck.” riku mumbled, “but oh my god did you see how he did the 1999 chorus? i might just faint.” he continues to daydream, his eyes fluttering while his smile is as big as it could go.

“i think you’re drooling kuri.” you tease him while you ruffle his hair, laughing at his now sullen face.

hours and hours of performances you all have screamed for, slowly your friends disappear. sungchan quite literally got lost, sion and yushi left to buy food and do tarot card reading, it was just you, riku, jisung, and ningning.

both of you clung to each other while singing without even realizing it, his hand finally wrapped on your waist, your arm around his shoulders. you would be busted if someone reported the both of you guys in the ncu gossip page.

“wanna get out?” riku asks, leaning closer so you could hear him through the loud music and loud students.

you nod, and he did not waste a second to drag you with him. (un)luckily enough, your friends weren’t watching you both.

you guys successfully moved your way out of the crowd, finally out of the stage venue. the both of you laughed at each other, since riku was covered in sweat, and your hair got messed up.

“i didn’t think walking out of a crowd would be that hard.” he says, hands on hips, catching his breath in an exaggerating manner.

“i almost lost you like, four times!” you laughed combing your hair with your fingers, detangling some strands.

“good thing i held your hand tight, right pretty?” he teased, nudging your arm.

you chuckle, but for the nth time, your ears turned red. “of course, kuri.”

“come on, let’s walk around” he says softly before grabbing your hand once more, walking with you.

the night sky with the string lights hanged from booth to booth, vendor to vendor, compliment each other well, creating a soothing atmosphere while the noise from the music and the cheering students disappears each second.

riku spots a vendor that sells keychains, “y/n look,” he says as he drags you with him, the moment you guys reached the vendor he quickly searches through the endless amount of keychains. “they have matching cat keychains, we should get it!”

you couldn’t disagree, because he grabbed the two cat keychains and paid it, well it’s not like you were going to disagree.

right after that he dragged you to eat, play games (even if he said no to yushi earlier), and now you guys are sat on the grass, talking and talking, staying further away from the entire festival.

“today was fun wasn’t it?” he asked, playing with the grass underneath him, his eyes laid on you.

“it was,” you replied, your eyes up at the night sky, getting a cooling sensation at the cooled grass.

“i had a much more fun time with you, though.”

your heart felt serenaded by his words, you tear your gaze off from the night sky, looking at riku. “you really do have a way with words, don’t you?”

he gives you a gentle smile, his dimple visible. “just telling you the truth, y/nnie.”

you stayed quiet for a bit, not knowing how to respond. “i had a better time with you too, kuri.”

his cheeks turned into a tint of pink, though barely visible under the night sky. he watches you as your eyes returned at the night sky, watching the stars appear slowly, god he could just melt by just watching you.

“you know,” you started, he hums in reply. “i always look forward to seeing you, riku.” you admitted, your eyes never leaving the night sky.

“you make everything better each time i see you, don’t even get me started on how much you look out for me.” you feel yourself smiling as you talk. “maybe i am glad you hit me with a ball.”

he chuckles at your last sentence, shaking his head. “you’ll never let go of that will you, pretty?”

you laugh, your gaze transferring to him. “nope.”

maybe there’s a chance that he wasn’t the only one that’s feeling too much like he thinks he is. maybe you are too. and he isn’t wrong, you feel that you’re also feeling too much. too much that you start leaning in, and he does the same.

hitched breaths almost colliding, one more inch and both lips are binding.

“riku? y/n? there you are!”

“jesus guys why’d you go this far from the festival? nothings there!”

except it didn’t.

you both quickly backed away, and that's the most you've been quick you're entire life. you're the first to turn around, seeing yushi and sion walking up to you guys.

“what are you guys doing here? stargazing?” sion asks, both of them finally right behind you both.

“something like that,” riku mutters, standing up quickly, not forgetting to lend you a hand. you slowly took his hand, standing up as well.

clearly the two friends didn’t see what happened prior to their shouting, because they were confused to why the both of you could barely look each other in the eye.

“well… we thought we lost you guys, and it’s pretty late already so.” yushi explained, with sion nodding.

“well i’ll go first, have a goodnight all of you.” you said before quickly walking away, not even letting them talk, or even allowing riku to walk you home.

you are so dead.
