- cherry wine is about domestic abuse. it’s now called a cute proposal song.
- too sweet is about seizing the day and ignoring healthy habits in favor of having more fun with unhealthy ones. he’s actively critical of himself in the song. it’s now called a song about thinking you’re superior for drinking black coffee.
- take me to church is about worship as a metaphor for sex. it’s called a religious song.
- eat your young is a song about war and political greed. it’s called a song about sex.
- now, the strongly political message of nobody’s soldier is being ignored in favor of calling it a metaphor for hozier’s relationship with his fans.
when are we going to stop simplifying hozier’s music down to cute little cottagecore bogman forest music? maybe you dont want to hear this but i don’t care. quit listening to hozier for the aesthetic. there’s a reason why empire now, foreigner’s god, butchered tongue, etc. songs with unignorable political messages are among his least popular songs.

The Uncensored Picture of Dorian Gray Chapter 1
This is a collection of my favourite quotes and thoughts about them.
"Harry," said Basil Hallward, looking him straight in the face, "every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not the sitter. The sitter is merely the accident, the occasion. It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it is rather the painter who, on the coloured canvas, reveals himself. The reason I will not exhibit this picture is that I am afraid that I have shown with it the secret of my own soul." Basil to Henry, page 61
I can't express how much I love this quote. It's probably one of my favourite quotes in all literature. I've never asked myself if a portrait was faithful and yet, I won't be disappointed to learn that instead of being faithful and realistic, it is the painter's view. Nothing is beautiful, not objectively. We give beauty to things. If we love something, it'll be beautiful. As soon as we hate it, it becomes ugly. I don't find the Mona Lisa attractive, but I can tell she was loved by the way Vinci painted her. I love how art can give anything to everything.
"What the invention of oil-painting was to the Venetians, the face of Antinoüs was to late Greek sculpture, and the face of Dorian Gray will some day be to me." Basil to Henry about Dorian Gray, page 66
I personally like this one because I used to be obsessed with Antinoüs. Also, Dorian Gray is more than a man Basil loves. Dorian Gray is a muse, a turning point in the painter's career. He's everything for the man and the artist. And he has no clue about it.
"An artist should create beautiful things, but should put nothing of his own life into them. We live in an age when men treat art as if it were meant to be a form of autobiography. We have lost abstract sense of beauty. If I live, I will show the world what it is; and for that reason the world shall never see my portrait of Dorian Gray." Basil to Henry, page 68
The man is egocentric. You can't write about someone else, you'll always put yourself into characters, whether you're aware of it or not. Your painting will always be a reflection of what you feel about what you see and not realistically what you see. But, can we really create something beautiful when beauty is anything but objective?
"The worst of having a romance is that it leaves one so unromantic." Henry, page 69
Lord Henry Wotton, they will never make me hate you. I love every philosophical/piece of advice he tells Basil and Dorian. He's so right about it. If you tell me your first thought after heartbreak wasn't "I will never fall in love again" or "I will close my heart forever" or even "I don't think love exists", I won't believe you.
I wish I could read Chapter 2 right now but it's too late for my little brain
