im so much more interested in a hoo that lets Percy keep the status and power he'd left off with in the Last Olympian and explores how he grapples with that instead of immediately forcing him back into the role of the underdog at the expanse of his prior development. Let the fact that he alone has the title the "Savior of Olympus" mean something. Let the fact that he is the sole survivor of the great prophecy mean something. Let the Curse of Achilles mean something. Let us see how it's a curse and how it could warp his sense of self. Let Percy be on a completely different playing field than the rest of the seven (or even the other children of the big three at this point) and show us how it alienates him.

version of SoN where after percy loses the curse he loses the memory of annabeth, which he only had because she was his mortal tether. so as he stumbles into camp jupiter he's panicking because he knows he just forgot something important—he had it just a second ago—oh gods what was it

honestly this entire plot line of getting recommendation letters just does not have enough content to warrant 3 books each the length of the lightning thief. this should have been a series of short stories like the demigod diaries so we could have these fun, low stakes slice of life moments, but instead we're getting this painfully drawn out story where the majority of the scenes feel hollow and repetitive

the greek big three kids being mirror images of the relationship between their fathers. the big three are constantly in conflict, in a power struggle, but they love each other in a convoluted sort of way, and are tied in the knowledge that of all who exist, only they can keep each other in check. nuclear deterrents but make it family. greek big three children are FERAL and i stand by that
"nuclear deterrents but make it family" I love this so much like-
This constant struggle for power but its a power that only they can fathom so the conflict binds them together in a fluxing state of resentment to care back to resentment again???
Then within the big three children, not only are they grappling for the power between themselves, but they each also have the added conflict of grappling for the power within themselves. Like, each of the big three kids seem to be constantly vying for and rejecting their respective mantles at the same time. They want their power but they dont want their power. And it all boils together into this messy, explosive thing that's just so fascinating to dissect.
like I'm just obsessed with this notion that SOMETHING in their nature is compelling these kids to be what their fathers are and yet they're also trying to rebel against that compulsion, whether they realize it or not. And it just ends up making a mess of their minds.

thinking about how the (greek) big three swore to never sire any more demigod children because those children are just too powerful (dangerous) and also thinking about how the characters that, arguably, seem to have the greatest proclivity for cruelty in the name of justice or vengeance are also the (greek) big three children... there's something there, a connection to be made I'm sure of it

an interesting aspect of the rachel/annabeth rivalry is that it was pretty one-sided in some respects. rachel didn’t have no reaction to annabeth’s overt jabs, but she also didn’t respond in kind. she calmly absorbed them but showed that she understood them. (“are you sure you don’t know? boys. totally blind.”)
the fandom has sometimes, usually to put down annabeth, spun this phase of their lives as catty, mean girl drama. but that’s not what it is. it’s one girl lashing out because she has consistently lost everyone she cares about in her short life, and she’s scared it’s about to happen again. and it’s one girl who happens to be in the way and understands, as much as she can without knowing annabeth’s history, that by no fault of her own she is an upsetting presence, and doesn’t let herself be cowed. neither of these things are “likable,” especially for female characters, but they’re essential to both of their characters
sometimes people criticize percy here, too, but i think blaming any corner of this triangle kind of diminishes the heartache and tragedy and inevitability of the situation. of course a mortal friendship is appealing to percy when his demigod life is so difficult and painful. of course that triggers annabeth’s abandonment issues. of course percy is slow to recognize that rachel likes him. of course he is then confused and anxious that annabeth is upset. of course rachel feels drawn to percy as an escape hatch from her own neglectful parents. of course it hurts annabeth that percy might be falling for someone else. of course rachel recognizes that. of course she isn’t obligated to blow percy off because of it. of course annabeth doesn’t know how to communicate why she’s upset that percy might date rachel when she doesn’t even have a real claim on him. of course she feels helpless and panicked and defensive. of course that makes percy feel like he’s being pushed away. of course he then gets closer to rachel.
it really misses the point to reduce their actions or feelings as being in the right or wronging each other. they’re just three kids staggering under the weight of enormous, difficult emotions and circumstances
