I also as a look at Tom Butler’s work, which was very interesting. I would definitely like to explore this process in greater depth.

Instant Stories. Wim Wenders’ Polaroids. - Exhibition at the Photographers Gallery. I recently visited this exhibition and really enjoyed it. Although some of the images individually lacked interest and substance, the collection on the whole was beautiful. I loved the delicate colours and the personal insight into Wenders life. I particularly liked the curation of the exhibition, and enjoyed the fact that the small images and framing at eye level meant that all the viewers had to stand close and really look at each image individually, to understand the exhibition as a whole. As much as I enjoyed it, I couldn’t help but laugh at how expensive the process of Polaroid images are nowadays, and how the possibility to create a body of work so heavily focused on the instant image, would be much less cost effective today.

I had absolutely no idea where to start with this, as I had never done anything like it before. So I watched some Youtube videos like this, which really helped. I am going to try and do a more complex second image.

Examples for ‘Losing Face’ Project, All from Pinterest. All tackle the idea of covering someones face, mostly by doing something in post production, and adding another medium to the photograph. Stitching, painting, collage etc.

This is an idea for a project about modern day feminism, called ‘Losing Face’. The idea would reflect the way feminism is being commercialised and commodified in modern day society, with a focus on fashion. I would then cover women’s faces, to symbolise being covered up by patriarchal institutions and large corporate companies.
I love the idea of using my hands to alter a photograph. Although I have never done embroidery/sewing before, I am going to give it a try. I also find the use of haberdashery very representative of the issue I am interest in. Not only does it reflect the fashion industry and their interest of feminist issues in recent years, but it is also representative of the idea of ‘sending women back’ in time, to an age where the medium was heavily dominated by women, in factories and at home. The idea of quieting women speaking for the cause. As well as the idea of beautifying something which is by no means beautiful.

This was very interesting to read, there is something about the simplicity and uniformity which really appeals to me.

Prior to this course, I have never worked with portraiture. I have always worked with subjects that I do not have control over, always being an observer rather than an orchestrator. For me, the idea of using simple, stylised portraiture is more of a challenge to myself than anything else. After visiting the Thomas Ruff ‘Photographs 1979-2017′ exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery I felt very drawn to the idea of using such intimate images, like those seen above, as a way of showing young women how beautiful they can be in their simplicity. I would like the project to mean something to the models involved, I would love for them to feel beautiful.
I also have an idea that I could use a two-way mirror and photograph the women through the glass, and then again without it. To see how women change when they can see themselves. Do they prefer the images where they could see themselves and they had more control? Or the ones free from any ideals and projections.

starting my project
This week was the first week I got my ideas out of my head, and onto some paper. I have several ideas, all of which I would love to expand and trial different techniques with, so for me this really was just a very small step forward.
Scanned in below are some pages from my sketchbook. I am going to use this Tumblr as a space to visually develop different ideas, discuss galleries, and use sketchbook work and mood boards in conjunction to try and demonstrate what is going on in my head.
Although I am not sure on the details of my project, I know that I am interested in gender and feminism, and particularly how it affects young women in 2017. I am surrounded by friends battling anxiety, depression, and the idea of their self image. There is such a monumental pressure at the moment for young women to look and act a certain way. We are now in a crucial time for whether or not women fight these expectations or allow them to devour us.
Does the rise in mental health issues amongst young women relate to our concern with our appearance? Are patriarchal institutions using the commercialisation of feminism as a means to wash away the true meaning of the cause? I have a lot of questions, many of which I will not find the answers too over the course of my time on this MA. However, hopefully through my work and my art I can move a step closer.
