Final.
First building up a base shape using modrock I created this 3 dimensional texture creating the indents in the skin while having the hand perturbing outwards asserting its dominance. Then to smooth everything out I stretched a thin sheet over the canvas this preventing the cracks in the modrock from showing. I primed my canvas using gesso and then added paint. Once the paint was added I wanted to create further dimension in the hand. To do this I mixed flour with the paint creating a paste and I used that to build up more layers.

Far left: experiment with paper machete. Even though It didn’t turn out how I had hoped I still found the lines and shapes on it to be very interesting.
Middle: I used this small canvas as a pallet for my final piece. This creating a piece on its own while also portraying texture and flesh tones
Far right: modrock experiment. Was happy with how this turned out and progressed this technique onto my final.

paper machete experiment:
I found the paper machete very difficult to work with and mould into shape, it took a long time to dry and did not dry completely solid. the definition was not noticeable once dry.

texture experiment
When considering what material I would be using to be adding texture/dimension to my canvas I had to consider what would be the smoothest, create noticeable dimension and what would stick to the canvas. I considered materials such as: clay (which was quickly dismissed due to the weight and inability to fire it.), modgepodge and paper machete.

modgepodge experiment:
I found this to be the best method out of the two which I tried as once it was dried it stuck to the canvas easily, it dried hard allowing the acrylic paint to apply well and it was easy to hold and shape.

REFRENCE IMAGE
hand grabbing the leg, indents being made on the skin imply how hard it is being grabbed. the hand on the leg imply intimacy. Is the control mainly through an intimate/domestic relationship?

Canvas making process
Using timber 45x20 Cut corners to degree Mitre joint Angle chamfer ^Roughly 30degree because a meter is wide there’s less strain on build of canvas Cut one 90cm Using one to scribe the rest so they are all exactly the same size Put them back to back standing on the ground so you can feel if they are the same length Repeat with all until all sides are measured out correctly Glue and clamp all corners together creating a square frame for my canvas Belt clamp Once all corners are in place turn belt clamp clockwise to tighten Leave for 30 minutes to dry Place on a flat surface with canvas under the frame Pull and stretch the canvas tightly and using a staple gun attach the canvas to the frame. Repeat this process all the way along continuously pulling the canvas right all the way along Cut off any excess material Prime the canvas with either gesso or amultion paint.

Men like this still have a large influence over both men and boys as his actions are often excused. This influence is scary.
