Why do people like high speed rail so much?
Because its public transit, not private transit.
Its significantly cheaper to travel long distances compared to other options like flying or driving. In a lot of cases it may even be faster than flying, and even when its slower, its not slower by a large amount. Its better for the environment, and trains are just cool.

I was playing final fantasy 7 and noticed that seemingly all rails in midgar are doubled.
The most plausible explanation i can think of is that they use guard rails as shown below:

Apparently these are used most commonly on bridges and in tunnels, to prevent derailed trains from falling off or damaging the structure. Given the interplate railway's line around/through the central pillar, that would definitely be a reasonable thing to protect against.
However, there are also genuine multi-rail tracks, often combining multiple gauges. The most extreme example i found is this six-rail track. What a beautiful monstrosity!

Apparently the reasoning here is that narrow-body tram-trains can stop close to the platform on either side, while wider trains run straight through the middle. You can see how after the station, the track goes back to regular two rails.
