What about the North?
What. A. Scene.
Where do I even start? The misdirection was incredible. This was such a good instance in which we see Sanaa’s political prowess. She’s analyzing Dany, seeing what makes her tick, and very quickly Sansa realizes ego boosts work on Dany. That’s why Sansa does it. The whole scene is one big misdirection of affections. Sansa realizes that if she thanks Dany and boosts Dany’s already large ego, she can get somewhere. And it works! Dany is extremely easily manipulated and receptive to the praise and thanks.
Then it shifts, and boy is it glorious.
I honestly thought that the writers would chicken out of the narrative of Sansa v. Dany over the issue of the North. Instead they doubled down. “What about the North?” It’s such a powerful question. It makes clear who’s in charge, Sansa. This is the first true questioning of Dany’s motives, of her selfishness, of her greed, of the lives given for independence. It’s the first time that anyone has truly brought up the fact that so many people died for the North to be free, both in Rob’s war and the Battle of the Bastards. I absolutely loved seeing Sansa’s strength. She’s not the same naive little girl. Sansa had grown and learned from the best politicians, and now she’s home and she doesn’t intend to lose it. As she said, the North swore to never bow to a southern ruler, and they won’t.
Then, there’s Dany’s reaction. The smile faultering. The confused “And then I take the throne.” The grimace. The stern tone. The shifting of hands away. Her reaction shows just how little she cares about the North. She cares about herself and her goals. As Dany said herself, she came to the north for Jon. If she is in love with him, then that’s the only reason she came north. Not to protect the people she so desperately wants to rule. To get the magic D (obviously). Dany’s reaction exemplifies everything I despise about her. She’s so entitled and can’t understand why people wouldn’t want to bow to her and call her queen. She assumes that power derived respect, but respect is something earned not something freely given.
Quite honestly, I used to dislike Sansa, but for the last two seasons she has been amazing. And this scene, in which she analyzes her opponent, uses their weakness against them, and then shows her strength and lack of fear, was the perfect showing of power. Sansa reminds me of Tywin in a way. She knows how to hold power, even with a lesser title. That’s why she has no fear in front of Dany. This is her home, and in her eyes, she has the power.

sansa stark played da/ny like an absolute fiddle in that conversation. y’all saw budding friendship, i saw sansa wait for da/ny to offer up what her grievance might be, unsurprisingly the first choice was jon. not that sansa would be mad that da/ny was taking their independence or food or any other crisis sansa has already stated. but jon. i saw sansa then hammer down that jon loves da/ny, something he had not said himself to her or anyone else. in the same episode we get a reminder of cersei ‘letting the truth do her dirty work’ we have sansa say that men are easily manipulated. D then offers up even more information, that she came north for ‘jon’s war’ not that the AOTD had swayed her, or losing her child, JONS WAR. ‘who manipulated whom’ and sansa quite literally stifles a laugh, smiling down at her feet. sansa then begins to lay honey on top of it, ‘i should have thanked you’ she compliments and flatters, even leans into her space smiling and then da/ny tells her that she loves jon. again, the first time we’re hearing it (though this time from the horses mouth, UNLIKE jon) that she KNOWS he’s true to his word. (personally i believe ‘who was the first’ was sansa prodding to know if it was someone present at winterfell that could be a problem and again is happy when it apparently is not). she tests the water with da/ny next, see’s whether northern independence is on the cards with her love for jon, when da/ny expresses ‘i take the iron throne’ she looks at sansa like she’s about to agree with her, we see sansa’s expression shift and she’s on the attack, something that leaves da/ny visably angry and rattled. sansa doesn’t recoil or move away, she stares her down and knows everything she wanted to about that da/ny from that exchange.

Evgeni Malkin: Horny. We are not mad. We are just disappointed.
Sidney Crosby: No, we are mad.
Evgeni Malkin: Yes. We are. We are livid. But we will let this one slide.
Sidney Crosby: No, we won’t!
Evgeni Malkin: I’m not a mind reader, Sid.
