MEDIA MANIPULATION, HYPNOSIS AND BRAINWASHING
Technology now a days is an important aspect of our daily lives. Technology has been constantly improving and developing in terms of its applications and how it can help the people. It is almost impossible to believe what technology has achieved. Our personal lives is now depending on the technology that people have developed. Technology has advanced with years and is also going with the change our society is experiencing. It has changed the way we purchase products, the way we live, communicate, travel, learn and the way we think and so many changes that is brought by these advancements in our lives. It has simplified the way we do things, it saves time, increases production, improved healthcare and has also improved our educational environment. But, not only technology has given us benefits positively, but also negatively.
In the world of today, media has become almost necessary just like food and clothing. We use media when searching answers to all our unanswered questions, when relaying information and communicating to other people and for entertainment. It is true that media plays an outstanding role in strengthening the society but little do we know, media can manipulate, hypnotize and brainwash us. It has strong impact not just on the society but also to the people who are exposed to it.
Media, can manipulate and misinform us. Media manipulation, is a series of related techniques in which partisans create an image or argument that favors their particular interests. People are now more dependent on media and will believe anything, as long as it is not founded on truth. Media deliberately chooses not to show the truth and makes interesting stories to attract more of their viewers. Through leaving out important pieces of information or directly positioning the viewers to see a story a certain way, the media is strongly shaping how people see the world. Mass media including radio, television and newspapers endeavors to shape and manipulate the public on a variety of things. Public opinion is informed through media propaganda. Advertising has but one purpose:  to sell a product or service or to promote a political figure by any and all means necessary including brainwashing the general public. Where does media manipulation come from? Media manipulation exploits the difference between perceptions and the reality. The media was long a trusted source for the information of the public. Today, all reasons and barriers that made it a reliable source of information have been broken down. Media manipulators have now started playing the game. They know that people easily trusts everything that media shows, people will assume that where there is smoke there is fire, and the unreal will become real. This all happens because of poor incentives. Spreading news, instead of relaying it through televisions and trusted sources, it has become through facebook and twitter. Media manipulators have deceived the journalists because journalists failed on deceiving the public. One of the more recent examples of media manipulation occurred when BBC News released an article to inform people of fake videos circulating around the world. One video, supposedly of the earthquake in Nepal, showed an earthquake creating huge waves in a swimming pool. However, this video was actually taken of an earthquake in Mexico in 2010. The video was turned horizontally and the time stamp was scrubbed to seem like it was from Nepal. BBC News had this video on their site, and it became international media. While the earthquake was a tragedy, it can be hard to see what damage was really done without the right information.
We used to pay people to filter information: they are called professional journalists, writers and artists, whose job is to dive in to the sea and comeback with pearls with them. We used to have strong gatekeepers. We used to complain that people should have freedom. But, what is happening right now? Freedom is supposed to create variety, not uniformity. After turning on our televisions and watching news, all we can see is people agreeing to what the media is showing to them. They don’t have their own stand and no longer have their perceptions and opinions about what media shows. This is where media hypnosis and brainwashing comes in. Human emotions can be easily controlled through these and because we are exposed to infinite information yet, we still do not know that we are already hypnotized and brainwashed. On television, we might not notice that how we see the news change our perceptions already, because as what was stated above, people believe what media releases as long as they still do not know the truth yet. On social networking sites, we easily trust what people post and because we believe, we also spread this information through clicking the word “share or retweet”. But as media and information literate, if we could just look, listen and observe closely as to what the television shows, we could still differentiate what’s the truth.
The internet has opened the door to so much information for just about anything. Because media can quickly manipulate, hypnotize and brainwash all things that our brain thinks, we should be our own gatekeeper. Faced with infinite information, we’ve got to decide up front what we’re going to filter for, at least initially. We don’t need more information, we need more information about the things that matter. To be able to do this all, we should think critically. We should be able to differentiate and understand what reality and perception is.  You should learn about yourself and develop your own thoughts and views on everything.
