Du`aa are of two types:

 Du`aa for seeking/asking (دعاء المسألة)

 Du`aa for worship (دعاء العبادة)

1. Du`aa for seeking: asking Allah for forgiveness, guidance, and that which will benefit in this world and the Hereafter. Similarly, asking Allah to remove the difficulties, and to ward off that which will cause harm in this world and the Hereafter.

2. Du`aa for worship: worshiping Allah by praising Him, thanking Him, fearing Him, loving Him, hoping for His mercy, putting one’s trust in Him, praying, fasting, doing Hajj, reading Qur’an, doing the Adhkar etc.

How to not let people take advantage of my good heart?

Don’t be scared to say no often and set boundaries. People probably take advantage because you’re always saying yes. You’re not a bad person if you deny certain things from time to time. It’s important for your own mental health. And if someone is ever to stop talking to you because you’re starting to say no more often and put yourself first, then clearly they’re not your friend for the right reason. Build your confidence and self respect!
