Oh The Government 🙄
In Writing on the Wall, Chapter 5 "Let Truth and Falsehood Grapple" pages 82 through 103, it talks about the problems the government faced with the technology of he printing press. Back in 1579 John Stubbs ruined Queen Elizabeth marriage because he worried that she might be planning to restore Catholicism as England’s religion and that she was negotiating with France. He secretly told everyone around by spreading the information in a pamphlet. This tale that was told about John Stubbs showed European rulers had realized what writing a pamphlet attacking authority could do (pg. 83). They imposed to set strict rules on printing. Trying to prevent dangerous writing of religion and politics from being printed. In the 16th century strict rules were set on printing across Europe. A rule was that a publisher of the text had to submit the text to a religious or secular authority (pg. 84). This could be a relatable problem that has happened in today’s society. Language is so important, and dangerous, towards the government. The government in today’s society puts all our post and writing under surveillance just to make sure we don’t post anything suspicious or threatening towards them. Over centuries the government has put a sensor on our speech, on what we say, or what we post because of the reaction we can have towards someone secretly telling us what they do or plan to do. Our reaction could be dangerous or threatening depending on the secrets we are told.

Poetry in Motion
Back in the 16th/17th century poems and other texts served as a form of social currency that could be used to establish and maintain useful connections (pg 76-77). Most poem writers dedicated their poems to readers who could be reached easily through scribal transmission (pg 77). Those who were skilled writers hoped that their work would win over their readers and have their work passed on to other influential people. Back then poets picked how their poems were translated. The translation could then be subtly manipulated to make a point (pg 71). In chapter 4 it is explained that poetry helped sending out compliments, making amorous advances, expressing grief or unhappiness, and cracking jokes (pg 69). Also during the 16th century printing pushed up the demand for paper in Europe. Printed books created the opportunity for more people to learn how to read and write. People were handwriting the documents being printed out then passed those copies to someone else. That was called manuscript circulation and the result from that were self-expression, self-improvement, and self-promotion (pg 73). When these writing began to come about they were entered in notebooks called miscellanies, anthologies, or commonplace books; which kept noteworthy items were copied and kept valuable information (pg 73).
A ‘saucy poet’ could be practiced today but would anyone take them seriously or would they be able to catch what they are saying? Could someone in today’s society tell a good joke but cover up a deadly serious point?

Ancient Communications
Standage explained how the methods of communication evolved throughout the centuries. From primates, to Mesopotamia, to Egypt, and to Greece. Egyptians created their own alphabet also using hieroglyphics. Their communication started off by using motions and social cues like picking bugs off one another. When communication became verbal the creation of letters started. Like we discussed before, the vertical and horizontal communication began. Only the rich and the famous could send or receive letters because they were the only ones who knew how to read and write, or the only ones who can afford someone else to do so. Egyptians believed that being able how to read and write gives you power.

Artistic Resistance
Art On My Mind
Art is not just paintings- it is music, poetry, play writes, and dance. “We ran to his classes, we escaped there. We entered the world of color, the free world of art.” Art, all art, is a way of expression. It helps you reach a part of your imagination during all ages of your life. This article, Art on My Mind, talks about how art is enjoyable but if you really want to go far into being an artist, that it takes time and hard work. “Art is something- in order to enjoy and know it, it takes work .” As I read this article I thought about an African American poetry writer, Gwenddlyn Brooks. A singer and songwriter, Lauryn Hill
A painter Ted T. Ellis and a play writer Tyler Perry

After reading “Six Decades of Social Class in American Television Sitcoms”, I have realized how the working class is portrayed in today’s television. In the Netflix series “Riverdale” a group of friends is trying to figure who murdered a classmate. But throughout the show everyone’s background story is being told.
Archie the main character is around the middle-class because his father is hardworking and owns his own business but it’s falling through the cracks.
Betty (Archie’s best friend) upper-middle, she could work but her parents are real uptight and says she can want for nothing.
Then Veronica is upper class, she absolutely wants for nothing.
Then Cheryl R/O upper, her family are the richest ones in town and the rudest.
And jugHead is the poorest of them all but the most loyal and likely to succeed more than anyone without the help of money.
In the series it really shows what money can make you do or how it makes you act. You can really see the difference in the working class.

In our Generation the internet captures all our interest. You can google walmart.com change what you put in your search engine and on the side bar there’s coupons for Walmart all of a sudden. Most of us is blind to the fact that capitalism is being forced upon us everyday. Everything is now digitally altered. For example your calendar, your clock, your notes, your maps, your books, and your papers(files). Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, even Tumblr have captured us under the spell of capitalism. Being watched behind the scenes of our social media is something that should not be happening; invasion of our, YOUR, privacy.
“In a world in which private riches grow at the expense of public wealth, it should not surprise us that what seemed at first as the enormous potential of the Internet—representing a whole new realm of public wealth, analogous to the discovery of a whole new continent, and pointing to the possibility of a vast new demographic sphere of unrestricted communication—has vaporized in a couple of decades.”(Foster)

“Fake” news to me can be defined by the Kaepernick situation. During a NFL Game, Kaepernick decided to kneel down during the National Anthem. He wanted to protest against the wrongdoings that Minorities and Afican Americans were going through and still going through today. Instead of looking at his point of view, everyone decided to bash him. Saying he had no right to disrespect the flag. The media decided to bash him but didn’t bash the people that followed him some in the NBA. This lead to Trump making statements which had everyone protesting on the Sunday games on the 24th of September. Having teams not coming out of the locker rooms during the National Anthem. Also the fans who decided to take a kneel all around the field. But why did this take so long. Because Trump decided to say something? Why cover up the real reason, to give African Americans and Minorities respect.
