I think this is the moment I truly started to dislike Gale.
After reading the first book, I definitely loved Peeta, but I didn't know enough about Gale to either like him or dislike him. He was just there. Katniss's friend and potential love triangle participant. But then Catching Fire starts and in Chapter 2, we get this scene and it really left a bad taste in my mouth that only increases as the series continues.
This really does an incredible job of setting up Gale's entire attitude about Katniss. Their relationship is about him and what he wants. About what he feels like he deserves from her. He kisses her because he wanted to, without any warning or checking in with her to see where she is. He doesn't talk to her about what she's going through or think maybe the best time is not right after she survived an extremely traumatic experience. Gale wants a kiss and he is owed a kiss so by god he's going to have one!
Contrast this with everything we see with Peeta in the first book and even though he too is in love with Katniss and has been for ages, all physical affection is on Katniss's terms. He makes jokes about kissing, but in every kiss, she is the one who initiates and he makes no effort to take that choice or control away from her.
Peeta respects Katniss and her wishes in a way Gale never does and it's never more clear than when comparing the two first kisses.

It's a long shot, it's suicide maybe, but I do the only thing I can think of. I lean in and kiss Peeta full on the mouth. His whole body starts shuddering, but I keep my lips pressed to his until I have to come up for air. My hands slide up his wrists to clasp his hands. "Don't let him take you from me." Peeta's panting hard as he fights the nightmares raging in his head. "No. I don't want to . . . " I clench his hands to the point of pain. "Stay with me." His pupils contract to pinpoints, dilate again rapidly, and then return to something resembling normalcy. "Always," he murmurs.

Amor En La Nieve Ch.1
Happy Birthday, @titaniasfics so you remember the movie Las Palmeras Sobre La Nieve, and how much we swooned over the love story. Well this is your present the Everlarked version we spoke about so long ago. I hope you enjoy! TQM!!
Special thanks to @akai-echo for the beautiful banner, as always I am humbled by your work and @norbertsmom for Betaing, you always are willing to suffer through my rough writing. To @everlarkingjoshifer for the encouraging me, when my computer gobbled the first draft of this story.
RATED T
The Island was quiet. Although the sun had yet to crest over the horizon, it was already hot and the air was humid. The sky crackled with the upcoming storm. A bolt of lightning indicated the commencement of the midnight hour. The ceiling fan twirled around giving the lovers sprawled on the bed a small amount of cool air.
Katniss cried, “Peeta!”
Peeta Mellark’s hands raised the hands of the woman he loved over her head. She spoke her English with an accent. She rounded her ‘r’ and whenever she became upset she stopped speaking English altogether.

Out on a Limb (Part 6)
Previous parts
“Has Peeta asked you out yet?”
Katniss’s eyes widened at the audacity of Delly’s question. There were people around. She looked toward the bar where Peeta was thankfully out of earshot.
Actually, no. She wanted for him to hear so she wouldn’t have to field the question.
“Oh, no,” Katniss said quickly. “It’s not like that.”
“It’s not?” Delly said. “They’ve got a board at the Hob mapping how late you leave Mellark’s bakery each night.”
She gasped. She’d seen the elaborate “Cat vs Mouse” chart on the Hob whiteboard but thought it was about that stray cat, Buttercup who terrorized the town square. Now she wanted to know what the hell the cheese side quest meant. She was going to kill Darius. This had his name written all over it.
“Look, I know Peeta comes off all confident and carefree, but he’s actually really shy,” Delly explained. “He could use the encouragement.”
Katniss wanted to laugh. She’d given him plenty of encouragement. Too much encouragement. An evident amount of encouragement was currently growing inside her.
Peeta returned to the table with their drink order.
“I’m kind of seeing someone right now,” Katniss said as means of deflection. She accepted her ginger ale.
Peeta perked up at this.
“Since when?” Delly asked.
“A few months.” She could feel the heat of Peeta’s stare. “He lives in the city. He’s a doctor — Aurelius.”
Peeta snorted. That was the name of her OB. “Wow, formal titles? Sounds serious.”
It occurred to Katniss in that moment that she didn’t know her doctor’s first name. She wanted to say Mark. That sounded right.
“Oh,” Delly said looking crestfallen. “That’s great. I hadn’t realized.” Her phone began to buzz on the table. “That’s Thom, I should get this.” She went outside to take the call.
Peeta was smirking into his drink. “What was that?”
“A diversion,” she said. “Did you know there’s a town wide game going on about who’s hiding the cheese?”
By Peeta’s chagrin, it was clear he knew all about the board. “Katniss we’re coming on five months here, they’re going to find the cheese real soon.” He looked down pointedly toward her stomach.
She figured she’d be showing by now, but at twenty two weeks she was still wearing her regular jeans, albeit a little more tightly.
“People are going to talk no matter what,” he said. “What would you rather they talk about?”
She sipped on her ginger ale. “It’s nobody’s business.”
“Only yours, mine, and your boyfriend doctor.” He was laughing again.
“Shut up,” she said.
He had to dry his tears, he was laughing so hard. “Even when this lie inevitably blows up, your secret will be safe, because admitting you’re his patient would be a HIPAA violation.”
“I hate you.”
“We’d still have to find a new doctor, though.”
“Why?”
“Christ Katniss, you just broke this man’s heart! What do you expect of him?”
Now she was laughing too. “Stop!” she said, nudging him with her elbow. She felt her stomach roll. “Oh! Come here,” she said grabbing his hand from beneath the table and pressing it firmly to her side. “Do you feel that?”
The baby had been moving for a while now, but never when Peeta was around. In fact, they’d spent many an hour encouraging her to move in his presence.
“That’s her?”
She nodded.
“What do you think she’s doing in there?”
“Spinning.”
“I don’t think she likes us fighting,” he teased.
“No, I think she just really likes ginger ale.”
Delly was returning to the table, so he pulled his hand back into his lap. “Thom’s not coming,” she said. “He’s stuck at the construction site all night.” Delly pulled on her jacket and picked up her purse.
“You’re leaving?” Peeta said.
“We’re trying to have a baby, and I’m ovulating as we speak.”
“So what? You’re going to run over there for a backseat quickie?” Peeta asked wryly.
“Yes. That’s exactly what I’m going to do.”
Peeta grimaced. “I didn’t want to know that.”
Delly was already backing away toward the exit.
“Can you find another ride home?” she asked. She must have driven Peeta there.
“I can do it,” Katniss said, raising her hand.
“Wish me luck!” Delly said with one last departing grin.
Peeta shook his head. “Maybe we should offer pointers,” he muttered after she was gone. “You want to get out of here? Ripper’s already pissed I only ordered sodas and water tonight.”
She drove them back to her place without suggesting it as the destination. Haymitch was watching television in the living room. Ugh. She kept walking toward her bedroom.
Peeta was too polite not to acknowledge Haymitch so he said, “Hello.” Haymitch only grunted in response.
Once in her room, Katniss grabbed some sweatpants and slipped into her bathroom to change. While her jeans still fit, they were not at all comfortable. When she returned, Peeta was standing awkwardly by the side of the bed.
“What are we doing?” he asked.
“Hanging out,” she said, climbing onto the bed.
He toed off his shoes and shouldered off his jacket. He was still lingering. “Should I take my pants off?”
“What? No!”
He sat beside her. “What do you think about moving in together?”
“Fine. If you’re that uncomfortable, you can take your pants off,” she said.
“I mean it,” he said. “I’ve been reading a lot of books, and the first year sounds pretty rough. It might be easier if we lived together. At least for a little while.”
She thought about it. Maybe Peeta was right before. There was no avoiding town gossip. And pretending nothing had changed wasn’t going to delay her due date. It would be better to take advantage of the time they had left to ease into things.
“Okay. Live here,” she said. “There are three bedrooms.”
He obviously hadn’t anticipated the suggestion. He looked at her dubiously. “Really?”
“If it’s only going to be temporary,” she reminded him. “Why would I move?”
“Fair point.”
“And your parents’ house isn’t an option.”
“Agreed.”
“And there aren’t any stairs here. You hate stairs.”
His smile widened. “Another strong argument.”
“So move in.”
“Does Haymitch even know you’re pregnant?”
“I thought it might be fun to surprise him,” she said. Haymitch had a nasty way of knowing everything, anyway, so she assumed he already knew. Besides, he’d tolerate a baby in the house, no doubt. Accepting Peeta, however, was debatable.
He rolled his eyes. “Should I surprise him too? Stand shoulder to shoulder with him in the hall bath for a midnight whiz?”
She stood and tugged on his arm to follow down the hall. They sat on the sofa beside Haymitch’s chair. He didn’t bother looking away from the television.
“No you can’t have the remote,” Haymitch said. “I’m watching this.”
“Pause it, then,” Katniss said. He didn’t. Fine. “I’m having a baby and Peeta’s moving in.”
His eyes slid slowly from the television screen and he stared at her for a moment. Probably to gauge whether she was being serious. He sighed. Heavily. “Have you told your mother?”
“No,” she said shortly.
He looked at Peeta next. “Is he?”
“Yes,” she answered.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Please call your mother,” he said. “I don’t want to,” he waved his hand in their direction. He sighed again then flipped off the TV. “I’m going to bed.”
“That went better than I expected,” Katniss said once he was gone. Peeta covered her hand with his. The baby was moving again so she flattened his palm against her abdomen.
“Can I stay tonight?” he asked.
“Your room isn’t ready yet,” she said.
He shrugged.
She led him back to her room. The third bedroom remained unoccupied.
