John's Circumcision
At the age of 13, John had to stay for a week in the local children's hospital for a circumcision. This was the first time he’d been back in a hospital since his tonsillectomy at six years old, and he found the experience both nerve-wracking and strangely nostalgic. The hospital’s cheerful yet sterile environment, filled with child-friendly decorations, instantly brought back memories of his previous stay.
Upon arriving at the surgical ward, John was assigned a small, brightly lit room with a single bed. The nurses were friendly, but John couldn’t help feeling out of place among the younger children who also populated the floor. Despite being nearly a teenager, he was treated just like any other child in the hospital, a fact that became more obvious when he was handed a set of hospital clothing to wear.
The hospital required all patients to change into standard-issue garments: a loose patient gown, a colorful cap with childlike patterns, and, much to John’s embarrassment, a rubberized pair of protective shorts. The nurse, a young woman with a cheerful demeanor, explained that the shorts were designed to protect the bed linens and could be fastened and unfastened with snaps. Although she reassured him it was a hygiene protocol, John couldn’t shake his self-consciousness. The childish designs on the cap and the unusual material of the shorts made him feel awkward, yet there was a flicker of curiosity as the memories of his childhood operation resurfaced.
The Morning of the Surgery
On the day of the procedure, John was asked to change into his surgical attire. A young nurse entered his room, carrying a neatly folded set of clothing on a tray. She handed it to him with a smile and gave clear instructions on what to do.
“You’ll need to wear this gown over your underwear, and here’s your surgical cap,” she said, holding up the cap adorned with smiling cartoon animals. “Oh, and these special shorts—they’re easy to fasten with the snaps here.”
John’s cheeks flushed as he took the items. Closing the curtain around his bed, he changed quickly, trying not to dwell on how absurd he felt in the childlike outfit. Yet, as he tied the strings of the gown and adjusted the cap, he couldn’t help but feel a strange mixture of embarrassment and excitement. The sterile smell of the hospital clothing, the smooth texture of the rubberized shorts, and the familiar ritual of preparation triggered a rush of memories from his earlier operation. He felt a sense of anticipation that was both unsettling and oddly thrilling.
The Operating Room Awaits
After a long wait, during which John fidgeted in his bed, a nurse came to wheel him to the operating room. As he was rolled through the brightly lit corridors, he tried to focus on the ceiling tiles, ignoring the occasional glances from hospital staff and other patients.
Finally, they arrived in the operating room. The room was a sea of green—green tiled walls, green drapes, and the green scrubs of the medical team bustling around him. Overhead, a massive operating lamp with bright bulbs cast a dazzling glow over the center of the room. At the head of the operating table stood the anesthesia machine, a sleek setup of monitors, dials, and black rubber hoses coiled neatly.
A young female anesthetist greeted John with a warm smile. She introduced herself and explained what would happen next. “We’re going to start your anesthesia soon. You’ll feel sleepy, and before you know it, the operation will be over. First, I’ll have you breathe through this mask.” She held up a black rubber anesthesia mask attached to thick hoses and a soft, inflated breathing bag.
John felt his heart race as she fitted and strapped the mask over his face. The rubber had a distinct smell that was both strange and oddly comforting. The anesthetist asked him to take slow, deep breaths.
“Now, John, I need you to help me with something,” she said, holding up a black rubber balloon. “Can you inflate this for me? Take a deep breath in and then blow out as hard as you can.”
John obediently began to inflate the balloon, his breaths echoing through the tubes and into the machine. With each exhale, he could hear the soft hiss of air and feel the resistance of the rubber. As the anesthetist adjusted the flow of gas, John noticed a faint, sweet smell creeping into the air.
“That’s perfect,” the anesthetist encouraged. “Just a few more breaths. You’re doing great.”
John felt his body relax as the combination of gases began to take effect. The sounds of the room grew distant, and his vision blurred slightly. The mask felt snug against his face, and the rhythmic expansion of the balloon in his hand became hypnotic. He heard the anesthetist’s calm voice one last time before everything faded to black.
Waking Up in the Recovery Room
When John opened his eyes, the lights of the recovery room felt dim compared to the operating room. He blinked a few times, his senses slowly returning. A nurse leaned over him with a kind smile.
“Welcome back, John. The surgery is all done. You did great,” she said softly.
John felt groggy but comfortable. He became aware of the loose hospital gown draped over him and the faint crinkle of plastic beneath. Curious, he lifted the blanket and noticed he was now wearing a different pair of protective shorts, slightly softer than the ones before, and his surgical cap had been replaced with a fresh one featuring cheerful patterns. He couldn’t help but feel a mix of embarrassment and amusement at his appearance.
As the nurse checked his vitals, the door to the room opened, and in walked someone unexpected—his friend Lara.
“Hey, John! I came to check on you,” Lara said brightly.
John’s face turned crimson as he realized how ridiculous he must look in his hospital attire. The childish cap, the plastic shorts—everything felt utterly humiliating. Lara, however, seemed unfazed and gave him an encouraging smile.
“Don’t worry,” she said, noticing his embarrassment. “You’re still you, even if you look a bit silly.”
A Memory to Last
As John recovered over the next few days, he couldn’t stop thinking about the experience. Despite the awkward moments, the strange mix of sensations and the surreal nature of the anesthesia left a lasting impression. It was an intense, almost dreamlike event that he knew he would remember for years to come.

In the children's hospital, many kids and teens undergo surgery and receive anesthesia for the first time. Even the older teens usually have to wear hospital gowns and caps with children's patterns, which are also available in teen sizes. Most older children and teenagers find this embarrassing, especially when visited by friends or family. For hygiene reasons, older boys and girls are also required to wear special briefs to prevent the beds from becoming soiled.
Sometimes, the young nurses have a bit of fun, and the older boys are given hospital outfits in girly colors or with childish patterns, claiming that the neutral gowns and briefs are no longer available.
While younger children often find anesthesia scary, many older kids are fascinated by the journey to the operating room and the slow mask-based induction of anesthesia. You have a mask placed on your face, and you’re asked to inflate the black rubber balloon…
