The Impact of AI in Climate Change Adaptation
Climate change is one of the most complex scientific challenges ever — a phenomenon with many contributing factors, including carbon dioxide levels in the air, temperatures, water availability, and weather patterns. It is also an issue that requires scientists, engineers, and industry experts from a variety of disciplines to unite their skills in pursuit of solutions.
One emerging tool that can help address these issues is artificial intelligence (AI), a technology that learns through experience and adapts to its environment. It can be used to analyze data such as climate models, satellite imagery, and weather patterns, and it can help governments and communities develop targeted adaptation plans for their areas.

Several AI-related projects are tackling the challenge of adapting to climate change. For example, the Dutch company Deltares is using an AI model to predict the impact of sea level rise on coastal infrastructure and techogle.co identify areas that are at risk of flooding, landslides, or drought. It can then provide these areas with guidance on how to mitigate risks and protect buildings, roads, and other structures.
Another example is the “My Anga” app, which helps herders in Kenya prepare for drought by sending them data on global weather patterns and satellite images through their mobile phones. This information can save herders hours of time by helping them plan ahead and make informed decisions about how to feed their livestock. For instance, herders who receive alerts that a drought may be looming can move their animals to greener pastures before the dry season hits.
These examples show how AI can support and accelerate efforts to combat climate change, but there is still work to be done. Specifically, it is important to ensure that these technologies are affordable and accessible, not only for the world’s wealthiest nations, but for all communities. It is also vital to address any potential biases that might be embedded in these systems. Additionally, it is critical to consider the environmental footprint of AI, from its production and use to its end-of-life disposal.
The good news is that technology website innovative climate-AI solutions are emerging, and more of them are joining the AI for the Planet Alliance — an alliance created by Startup Inside with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and BCG GAMMA as knowledge partners — to provide visibility, networks, and business support for climate-AI solutions worldwide. But to fully harness the power of AI for the planet, further collaboration among researchers, technologists, and decision-makers is needed, as is continued investment in research on how best to apply these technologies for climate-change mitigation and adaptation.
